This is the best rendition of this raag I've heard. It's not just the backdrop noises (thunder + sound of rain falling on concrete), it is also the marvel of the tabla. Mr. Nandy is an absolute genius to 'control' and 'exert' the resonating power of the tabla - how does he do that? And as for Pandit Mukherjee, any superlatives will sound superficial.
This is the most compelling video on your channel in terms of technical difficulty of shooting, audio capture, mixing, musicianship and artistic integrity. Sets the bar exceptionally high.
1000 years of rich musical heritage and art condensed into an incredible 16 minute performance. Towards the end Pandit ji's jhala even overpowers the sound of thunder in the background. A beautiful confluence of nature and music. I can only envy those who were fortunate enough to experience this live. Thanks for sharing.

The Monsoon season is meant for listening to Mian ki Malhar. This is an awesome sitar recital by Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee, recorded in the midst of a thunderstorm, that you can actually see and hear in the background. Never have I seen such a performance. It has to be seen and heard, to be believed. Kudos to Darbar Festival for such a unique recording.
Rare smiles of Panditji, he himself with the tabla player is immensely enjoying. My kudos to the organisers. And yes, Surbahar would have been the best.
pandya vedant ,, it's really raining here with sparks and thunders, I am enjoying listening to this music,,, but my husband is shouting on me to cut the net, lest it damages full set,, Mrs Rajya Lakshmi Pantulu
I have zero knowledge of music. But if such a piece holds ppl like me who can only understand Bollywood and Punjabi songs. Then it's definitely something beyond words. Thnk u and kindly mention the name of man on tabla. He really challenged thunderstorms.

Can feel it raining inside my home while listening to this, even as it looks ominous outside with Nisarga approaching Mumbai.... This is sheer bliss! Jugalbandi between the thunder and the Sitar.... while the raindrops and Tabla provide the vital accompaniment...

I am carried all the way to the richly imagination that Indian Civilization rains should return to our parched world lands- that World Guru will restore to this world its reason, true Vedant reason in the glory downpours of which all can bathe drenched to their skins, and yes the very souls.
Ended too soon! Nevertheless took a while to return to reality and adjust to the fact that it's not raining in Kolkata where I'm sitting listening to this... Syed Mujtaba Ali, the illustrious Bengali author, related an event involving late Ustad Faiyaz Khan Sahab when they were both in the employment of the Maharaja of Baroda. Paraphrasing from Ali's description: at an evening recital at his house, upon the Ustad's enquiry on what raga to sing next after his initial overture, a rather reticent and reluctant visiting lady ordered "Malhar". Baroda was then passing through a prolonged dry spell. But even as the Ustad was concluding his Malhar khayal, a few drops of rain appeared! However, the Ustad sat quietly through the effusive praise showered upon him by the overwhelmed audience as if it pained him; and after they had all dispersed, diffidently asked his host Ali, "Why do people shame me so? Nature obeys Almighty God alone, what power do mere mortals like me have to command it?" Ali's reply was no less memorable than the occurrence, "I don't claim to know God's ways; but tonight I'm sure He wished to save His servant's honour".
@@ryanchase9746 Those are the names the British gave to the cities. I assume they just found it hard to pronounce Kolkata or Mumbai :/ We reverted to the original names later.
Really an amazing concept by Darbar. What to say about Pandit ji, firing the depth of swars like he always does. This kind of job in which you have to depict the nature of monsoon where it is actually happening could only be achieved on sitar by him. He really is competing and overpowering the clouds in thunderstruck lightening! I just wish he played surbahar here! But thanks a lot to Darbar team!

Saw a raag malhara performance in Bandish Bandits yesterday and it started raining in Delhi. Since then I've been on Raag malhara trip. I'm loving the continuous rain. 😁😁

...actually it reminds me of the dinner party I gave when I lived in SW France and the guests accused me of going over the top with the special effects. An unexpected tornado turned up, locked in the leafy 300yr old trees on the village green next to my house. It wasn't so much all the roads being blocked with trees (uprooted or twisted off 2m or 3m up their trunks by the violent and insistent force of the wind) that prevented my guests gong home but the fact that both their cars were written off. The tree that flattened one of them landed within less than 1m of the dining room - I had sensed something but the noise of the wind drowned out (!) that of the rain and thunder. An unforgettable evening!

That right there is the sound of thousands of years of civilisation! Mesmerising as I listen to this masterpiece and light showers of rain rejuvenating the soil in this magical city of Jaipur. The video cudn't have been titled better! This is divinity captured forever! Blessed are those who were present to see this, hear this, feel this. Thanks for sharing a gem like this which happens only with heavenly intervention!
Well, it WAS already storming when they began, so we can't claim the raga brought the rain. But there WERE times when it seems to be a jugalbandi... Great job, all involved. The definitive Miyan Ki Malhar video for certain.
@David Kempton : Dear David...its just a casual reference. Legend / Myth has it that Miyan Tansen brought down stormclouds and rain when he sang Miyan-ki-Mallhar. Of course, it is part of India's 5000 years old heritage. No one takes it literally. Otherwise, we would not be suffering drought year after year. We imbue reality with magical meanings , sometimes. Makes life interesting. Though not rational. However please notice Panditji's gaze at the end of his rendition...at 15:43. It is an inward gaze. Rationality falters here. I get goosebumps at that look, and feel that I am in the presence of something larger. Peace
At first I paused it twice as I was confused whether it's a storm in my place or in the video. Such natural. The live storm has enhanced the divine music.

IN MY EARS IS SOUND LIKE SITA RAVAN SITARAVAN SITA RAVAN
The Monsoon season is meant for listening to Mian ki Malhar. This is an awesome sitar recital by Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee, recorded in the midst of a thunderstorm, that you can actually see and hear in the background. Never have I seen such a performance. It has to be seen and heard, to be believed. Kudos to Darbar Festival for such a unique recording.
It felt like one of the pages from the history books, that came alive, and the time stood still, what an incredible performance by the great maestro.
Hirak Sarkar so well put brother.
Rare smiles of Panditji, he himself with the tabla player is immensely enjoying. My kudos to the organisers. And yes, Surbahar would have been the best.
it's monsoon now and was craving to hear this raga on sitar..... wish fullfilled......blissed.
India and Indian people and Indian music are amazing. Something truly awesome and unique in this world.
Don't know whether the rain is complementing the music, or the music complements the rain!!
Both are complementing each other
One of the most artistic comments I've ever come across in Darbar videos!!
Thunder
well said sir! "poetry is made at the edge of running water"
Are we a drop in the ocean? Or an ocean in a drop?
it's raining heavily outside and I can't describe the happiness after listening this beautiful raag miyan ki malhar,😄😄😊😘⛈🌈
pandya vedant ,, it's really raining here with sparks and thunders, I am enjoying listening to this music,,, but my husband is shouting on me to cut the net, lest it damages full set,, Mrs Rajya Lakshmi Pantulu
Of course you will feel happy this raag is made for raining and to experience it you need to listen it in raining
I have zero knowledge of music. But if such a piece holds ppl like me who can only understand Bollywood and Punjabi songs. Then it's definitely something beyond words. Thnk u and kindly mention the name of man on tabla. He really challenged thunderstorms.
Thank you Bharti Tyagi!

If Sri Krishna would play the sitar instead of flute , it would sound like this !
Very beautifully said and I subscribe to your view. The experience is simply divine.
Did Sri Krishna ever play sitar? Never heard of such ridiculous nonsense ever!
@@victoriousrufus6747 He put an 'if' in his statement, dipshit. Enjoy the music and the thought for what they are.
Mr Roy sound itself is Krishna what ur saying that u loved the music I. E sound bhai Krishna is sound himself read the Gita u will find out how lord Krishna is everything everything and everything
Was so wanting a close-up of the Tabla at 14:57! And what a hauntingly gorgeous way to end the video, with a single candle being blown out..and thank you for sharing the behind the scenes story! Bahut Dhanyavad Darbar channel!
This rendition of Miyan Ki Malhar can bring shattering thunderstorm in my eyes!
No other words left. Too mesmerized!
Can feel it raining inside my home while listening to this, even as it looks ominous outside with Nisarga approaching Mumbai.... This is sheer bliss! Jugalbandi between the thunder and the Sitar.... while the raindrops and Tabla provide the vital accompaniment...

Perfection! Amazing performance by two masters. Hats off to the sound engineer, too!
Tabla improvisation ending at 6:13 is Wah!! Kya bhat. A great hand he has.
...also given a free hand by Panditji. You have to get the opportunity to show your skills by the main artiste!
Universal Rhythm *baat
Nature obeys Almighty God alone, what power do mere mortals like me have to command it?"
Ali's reply was no less memorable than the occurrence, "I don't claim to know God's ways; but tonight I'm sure He wished to save His servant's honour".
Arindam Sengupta thanks for sharing.
Just curious, why have your cities' names changed? Calcutta, Bombay, etc.
@@ryanchase9746 Those are the names the British gave to the cities. I assume they just found it hard to pronounce Kolkata or Mumbai :/ We reverted to the original names later.
Arindam da, wonderful story ! It is people like you who keep our heritage and our histories alive. Salüt !
It's as if they have channelled the beauty of the thunderstorm and translated it into this incredible music. Just pure magic!!
Never seen such a mindblowing stage beauty and the stage atmosphere before ever.... would love to spend my whole life there playing sitar.....🙏🙏

I've cassette, from RPG, probably, of Pt. Mukherjee. I used to put that cassette in walkman, and go to sleep. It was in 96-97.
And after 24 years, I'm seeing him here.
Nostalgic.

Wahh! The best performance of this raag I have ever heard. The weather compliments the feeling perfectly!
Astounding ! Those sounds of thunder and lightnings were natural !!! I am not in a position to comment on the performance of a master musician.
Regards to "The Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee". Wonderful His Music Creation. Mind Blowing. Superb.
The Darbar team has indeed done great,.. Thanks for giving us the beautiful ambience... And Of course, wonderful music by Pandit Ji... Namaste
The best part is the aati drut lay, the high tempo of raag.

all these instruments created by copying the sound of nature. Words are not word describe..
That right there is the sound of thousands of years of civilisation! Mesmerising as I listen to this masterpiece and light showers of rain rejuvenating the soil in this magical city of Jaipur. I am certain that the apsaras in Indra's court would have been dancing when this raga was played by Panditji in the majestic Rajbari.
It's like sitar is provoking thunderstorm to be more louder... Really enjoyed this concept. Thanks to Darbar.
This is the kind of music that brings the rain!

When I was a child I heard him at IIT kanpur auditorium many many years ago.... I was mesmerized then and I am in same awe several decades later...he literally defines moments that are beyond explanation..feeling liberated..zoned out
The video cudn't have been titled better! This is divinity captured forever! Blessed are those who were present to see this, hear this, feel this. Thanks for sharing a gem like this which happens only with heavenly intervention!
April 30,2022,Kolkata. Here to enjoy the first norwester of the year.

An undesirable combination of nature and music. It can only possible in indian classical music.
I couldn’t stop applauding at the end. Beautiful!
Please never delete this video.
Beautiful camera work, beautiful sound design, beautiful music. Just beautiful.
I'm feeling monsoon in summer💐
Hat's of to Pandit ji, Tabalji, and of course darbar
THANKS A TONN! 😊
The music of man and the music of nature blend incredibly well.
Amazing sitar but the control and perfection of the tabla player is impeccable
what a mood setter ... everyone should listen to this at least once in this monsoon. Indian classical is a beautiful world. thank-you so much to both the amazing musicians. Pranaam
This probably the best video of sitar i have seen so far ,thank you darbar festival , absolutely amazing 💜
Superb malhar, even clouds are roaring in applause.
Awesome
Sir you proved music is a magic. Very nice 👍👌
What a juggalbandi of lord Indira and Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee. A memorable treat.
I dunno how but this brought a smile to my face, wah pandit ji.
omg I wish I was there! First time seeing a concert in a thunderstorm!
Increible !!! Grandes Pandijis !
Oh my goddddd!!!! I literally cried listening to this!! This is so beautiful ❤️
koti pranams. the beauty of bharat and sanathana dharma is uncomparable.
Shabash! All I can add is that the incredible power unleashed here makes me believe the story of Tan Sen's sitar bursting into flame!
Better than any other sitarist in the Imdadkhan gharana Budhaditya captures the magic of Ustad Vilayat Khan at the height of his creative powers in the 1960's 70's.
Thank you for capturing the true romance of nature in its elemental flow. Raag Miyaan Ki Malhar seeds the Cumulonimbus clouds and ushers a cloud burst. The sheer brilliance of this rendition and your writing sums up the mood of pure nature. Thank you for sharing these rare moments of blissful absorption. In admiration for all your amazing contribution to Shastriya Sangeet and looking forward to meet the Darbar team soon.

My God! What a performance! What an artist! Is it really happening on earth or just a glimpse from heaven?
Absolutely stunning...hearing it and hearing it again...The pre monsoons just arriving in Delhi providing the perfect backdrop for this Raga...Amazing rendition from both Maestros..Naman 🙏
Sensational would be an understatement! This was a ticket to heaven.
This is the music that directly descended from the Heaven.
Indian classical music is intertwined with our Mother Nature...well rain has a beautiful melody. Rain brings new dynamics with the elements of Nature and it showcases life.
