    At 6:44 I mentioned the term "pirate ship" but did not explain the term. It refers to the playstyle where one or more tags would rarely push, instead favouring ranged engages like how a pirateship would move, exposing its flanks for its mounted cannons.
    I am also taking suggestions on what my next type of guide video should be on.

    I've been playing WvW since GW2 was in beta 10 years ago. This video has my 100%, full endorsement. Excellent and succinct coverage of the core aspects of positioning. I will easily say the single most important part of doing well in WvW is not build, not composition, not even skill rotation/other player skill; it's how good you are at reading the field, and knowing where to position yourself properly.

    Good guide, thank you! I would definitely say the main issue for beginners in WvW is not an optimal dps rotation, but positioning.
    I'm only at ~60k kills as a Support FB main after less than 2 years playing, but it's already quite obvious that I almost always die due to bad positioning rather than enemy pressure, of course unless we just get steam-rolled. I would encourage beginners to pay more attention to their positioning, than to only optimize their dps. If I run with pugs, the number of players not stacking often decides on whether we will be defeated or not.
    Also, as a beginner it pays off to listen to well-meaning advice from more experienced players (flaming doesn't count). Those are the times when I found the right direction to grow, after questioning myself what I was doing wrong and why I was not progressing.
    And lastly: when in a squad, do what the commander says, even if it might turn out to be a mistake. If the group starts to fall apart, you will definitely wipe. If you stack and follow the commands, you have a chance of winning. Especially in pugs, where most of beginners will encounter their first WvW fights.

    Big Thank You for the information. As a new player in wvw, most of the beginner's videos are too simplistic! Can you do a video on how to use Discord when invited to a squad or a party, as well as meaning of some of the commands. Thanks again!

    • @EruElpidus
      @EruElpidus  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you found it useful. Sometimes commanders might link the discord link in the squad message. In this case, all you have to do is crtl c and paste it in any browser. Every discord will have different protocols but most involve the API key: account.arena.net/applications to verify your home server.
      I am currently busy with my final year project but I might make something on discord use as well as some unspoken rules new players might miss out on.
      As for common commands, I recommend this other guide(not by me): th-cam.com/video/ROP6VJyLX1k/w-d-xo.html

    Since your excellent video does not cover positioning for SpellBreakers .... would you consider making one? :-D Or perhaps suggest a video that *does* go over proper positioning for SpellBreaker?

    • @EruElpidus
      @EruElpidus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't play a spellbreaker so I am not qualified to make a video but I can give you my thoughts. Spellbreakers have a lot of mobility with the greatsword and a lot of damage negation, as well as personal sources of stab. In that regard, they can afford to go off tag every now and then to land a bubble.
      However, as a spellbreaker you should always keep an eye on your zerg. Too many times have I seen spellbreakers that are so intent on getting a bubble directly on the enemy that they forget where their own zerg is i.e. they go too deep and their allies cannot do anything with their bubble. Ideally, you want to be in 900 range of your zerg when you drop the bubble. The reason is twofold: the well bomb and grav well/null field range is 900. The bubble prevents boon reapplication in addition to boon removal and you want your zerg to be able to capitalise on the no boon reapplication part. The second reason is that you are sort of protected. when you are off tag but within 900 range of your zerg while on the enemy zerg, the enemy zerg can either choose to target only you or 5 random players in your zerg. If they target you, you can just pop your defensive cooldowns and still drop the bubble if you are not interrupted. You have effectively reduced their DPS output by 1/5 since they chose to target you and not your zerg.
      Also note that you can cancel your bubble with fake pushes depending on how low your ping is. Then there is also the defensive bubble where your one bubble is enough to deter the enemy zerg from pushing as long as the bubble is up. HTH.

    You mind explaining how weaver moves differently from other builds? As someone who tends to play the spec i dont know the difference is between the other dps specs in wvw (im fairly new to the game mode)

    • @EruElpidus
      @EruElpidus  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for the late reply, I somehow missed this comment. Classes with greater mobility generally have more leeway to move around the zerg. Because you need to stay still to channel your meteors, you will inevitable not be able to follow the zerg like other classes can. Since a significant portion of your damage is also 1200 range, you also do not need to follow the zerg too closely to do your job, that is, to DPS the enemy group. Compare this with a dragonhunter, whose traps only drop at your feet. As a dragonhunter, with no stunbreaks, you are more reliant on your party to perform well. Therefore, you want to stick close to the tag whenever possible. I have a guide on dragonhunter coming out soon. In contrast, the weaver is more self-sustaining and so does not need to stay so closely.

      @EruElpidus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I either use target nearest enemy or click but you might sometimes click another unintended target or even an ally. Target nearest enemy might also sometimes choose a target that is behind you. Certain skills like scorched earth does not require a target. You can just point your camera in the general direction.

      That's a problem I initially had but over time you will learn to abstract and anticipate the important bits over time. Other times you won't even know what hit you when you go down. WvW could definitely use an overhaul on what skills are displayed (like boon rips or very high damage coefficient skills)

    At 11:40 you would've been able to get to tag with both dodges if you jump dodge. You might even over shoot the tag.
    Haven't finished the video but assuming jump dodging isn't included, jump dodging is a vital part of positioning and damage mitigation. Dodge then press jump immediately after to perform a jump dodge. This will take you about double the distance of a regular dodge and should always be used over regular dodging unless it would cause you to fall off something like a wall/cliff

    • @EruElpidus
      @EruElpidus  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The stun ended at 11:33 not 11:40. At 11:40 I was already doing my rotation and down one dodge. I could have expended both dodges but there wasn't much incentive to do so. I don't know if my firebrand popped his stab while I was out of range so I would likely have been caught in CC. Even if I did manage to make it to the tag, I would dodging into their bomb (observe the high density of red circles on my commander) without any dodges remaining to get out of it. I was also close enough to unload my full rotation while being in relatively little risk (my HP was untouched for the most part) so there was little reason to immediately rejoin the tag. This is part of the 10% of the time where you do not need to be on the tag.
      Edit: while jump dodge does give you better distance, I am under the impression that it takes slightly longer. (I might be wrong) There are certain scenarios where you just want to minimise the downtime from dodging since you can't do damage when you are dodging. And there are also instances where you only want to dodge the length of a standard dodge and dodge the length of a jump dodge. Saying you should always jump dodge is a bit like saying you should only ever take 1m steps instead of smaller steps. There are times where you want to take 1m steps and there are times when you want to take smaller steps.

    The only reason I dislike this video is due to the follower mentality it preaches. And the meta style of fighting will never change if new players go into the game thinking this is absolute. As a veteran commander, my biggest issue is people don't know the 3 defenses for the 3 fatal types of attacks. POWER MELEE is cancelled by 100% dmg reduction tech, UNREACTABLE SNIPES is cancelled by PERMA BLOCK/REFLECT, and CONDI BOMBS is cancelled by CONDI CANCEL TECH ( negate the effect, don't cleanse). Learn all the professions, all the roles (glass cannon, heal pump, medic), all the classes. The game is balanced, it is only that in depth knowledge has been dumbed down to 'use your evades' to change the disadvantage state because the defensive concepts can range from easy to understand like FIREBRAND (condi conversion master - medic role) to more difficult classes like RANGER (perma evasion with instant reset pet - old boxing ideology, hit without being hit). Good video, just it continues the ideology of glass canoons pressuring other glass canoons. Its boring.

    • @EruElpidus
      @EruElpidus  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure I am interpreting your comment correctly but what do you mean by "follower mentality"? Are you perhaps referring to following the general movements of the tag? The alternative to this "follower mentality" is a cloud and that is more exciting to you?
      And you also seem to be suggesting that it is possible to tank damage with "PERMA BLOCK/REFLECT". Do you have any footage of this against some competent group?

    • @MugEdge8
      @MugEdge8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EruElpidus There are servers and times where people are so knowledgable of their specific profession they can collectively bait a “train” , and other members can isolate and kill the tail successfully several times completely removing blob’s bombers (AOE condi- dmg types), mostly isolating necros from the group, perma cripple, perma immobilised, perma CC combined. There is no leader’s here. Only people who know how to completely negate direct dmg and condi dmg and escape while others disable the incoming danger. Multiple servers have done this with RoF. Generally RoF is not online all day so capturing footage is rare. FIVE guild is a very good example of putting together small groups that can stand in front of a blob and perfectly time 100% dmg reduction techniques and condi cancel tech against bigger groups. Clouding is not the tactic here, it is de-weaponising. The meta has become so predictable many people are bored with the game. I appreciate a lot of the advice , it is solid when referring to movement, but positioning I would not recommend this to new players. Especially if they don’t play one of the classes that you recommended. My server doesn’t have active streamers like this, I can’t find you a reference but we have disabled 50+ blobs more times than we can remember, but there are a lot of times where only new players are online. It is difficult to prove.

    • @EruElpidus
      @EruElpidus  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MugEdge8 "There are servers and times where people are so knowledgable of their specific profession they can collectively bait a “train” , and other members can isolate and kill the tail successfully several times completely removing blob’s bombers (AOE condi- dmg types"
      Sounds like they are not stacking close enough to the tag. Condi damage is nowhere near as effective as power in wvw because it lacks burst and is negated by the scrapper's capacity for condi cleanse.
      " mostly isolating necros from the group." sounds like focusing a target which is common in gvgs and requires someone to call out a target in the subgroup or the tag; definitely some coordination involved here. This does not really fit into a positioning video.
      "perma cripple, perma immobilised, perma CC combined" which is easily mitigated with superspeed or resistance/stab or good movement like staying closer to the tag or condi cleanse.
      "Only people who know how to completely negate direct dmg and condi dmg and escape while others disable the incoming danger." You cannot completely negate strike damage. There is no 100% damage mitigation. You could reflect projectiles with 100% uptime if coordinated properly but you cannot block everything with aegis. You seem to be suggesting that sitting in damage with defensive cooldowns is more optimal than evading damage which sounds a lot like the china gvg meme.
      I do not stream, I merely post my gameplay from time to time. Why don't you record what you are trying to say, or have one of your guild members record, against some semi comped group (FoW/AS/Vabbi blob or any gvg guild etc.) since you have "disabled 50+ blobs more times than we can remember". More likely than not, you are facing disorganised groups with really bad compositions and are therefore not really in any danger in the first place. Such groups form the majority of zergs in wvw and I can probably take of all my armor and still be fine.
      I do not recall having a single encounter where standing still with whatever defensive cooldowns has proved effective against my group, even while outnumbered. If I am correct in interpreting your words, what you describe is ironically more akin to the mindless "follower mentality" of just following the tag without any instinct of self-preservation. The meta will change when something more optimal comes out, hopefully with EoD, not with my little video.
