THE ART OF CADENCE
Understanding the impact of jerkbait retreive dynamics is essential. Connell emphasizes the importance of varying your jerkbait's cadence to match the mood and activity level of the bass. He advises against sticking to a rigid jerk-pause pattern, encouraging anglers to adapt based on the fish's response. Whether snapping the bait upwards to mimic a fleeing baitfish or maintaining a constant retrieve, Connell stresses observing and reacting to generate the bite.
PRECISION CASTING AND BOAT POSITIONING
Effective jerkbait fishing isn't just about the lure and its movement; it's also about mastering your cast and maintaining optimal boat positioning. Connell highlights the significance of making long casts, especially when fishing in clear water where bass are easily spooked. He highlights the casting efficiency of the Rapala PXR Mavrik 110, which features a unique magnetic weight transfer system that shifts the weight to the rear of the jerkbait on the cast. The result? Longer casting distances even into the wind. In addition to reducing the spook factor, long casts help your jerkbait reach its maximum running depth.
KEY POINTS FOR SUCCESS
Reacting to Conditions: Adapt your approach based on water temperature, clarity, and fish activity. Whether the bass are aggressive or lethargic, tweaking your cadence is crucial to success.
Mindful Movement: Pay close attention to your lure's movement. Subtle changes in the jerkbait's action can provoke a strike from a bass following the bait.
Boat Position and Stealth: Keeping a distance from your target and casting into the wind will significantly reduce spooking the fish.
Connell's expertise in jerkbait fishing is about understanding their behavior and using that knowledge to trigger predatory instincts. Whether targeting smallmouth or largemouth bass, his strategies will help you catch more fish with this dynamic lure category.

That maverick is actually really good I have 4 now 😂
One thing I have learned over 40yrs of jerkbait fishing is not to use those flimsy rods,I use a medium heavy. On a long cast those light rods will not snap the bait. Good deal man.
nice tip. you think a medium fast would be ok ?
I have always hated glass rods. Always still use graphite rods for all applications. If you’re gonna use those lighter jerkbaits and crankbaits, gotta learn how to cast them.
@@castandchill if you can get someone in another boat a long cast away to watch your jerkbait when you jerk it you will see it moves very little with light rods with fast tips. Also line matters, a fluorocarbon with no stretch helps too.
Braid to leader gets it to react way better even on a long cast
@@billybooth3237 you are exactly right sir!
Respectfully, just sayin.... Forward Facing Sonar...Boring....
It's a great encouraging video. Good info to inspire some jerkbait fishing. 👍🐟
Video game fishing at its finest
I've actually put away my flukes when largemouth are schooling. Instead, I'll throw a black/silver shadow rap 11. It seems to trigger the bigger fish (and the hookup ratio is much better). Recently, I made a cast and a 4.3 lb largemouth blew it up before I could even grab the reel handle.
One my favorite jerk baits that you're using. Matter of fact that particular jerk bait I have had better results not pausing in warmer water temps
Jerkbait Season !!! 🔥 🔥 🔥
It’s never NOT jerkbait season
Another great video DC!
I apologize for my ignorance; how far is a long cast? I fish from a kayak, 72 years old, short stature and short arms. Ty for any consideration.
The maverick redline hooks are trash. Ive actually never lost so many fish on trebles before. Lost a huge northern, thought i hit a log and then my rod tip started pulsing on it and popped off. Bunch of smallies threw that lure out also. Had a smallie bend a hook out also with loose drag
Huh, never heard of this. Our experience with the hooks has been solid.
@@Wired2Fish maybe I should be jerking the bait harder since they seem to hit in between jerks. I'm also new to fishing jerkbaits so that's why I'm probably having troubles, I'm used to feeling the hit and then setting the hook
They catch everything. My Walleye loves em
Hey Dusty, give them britches a break
Got if fleeing bait fish retrieves.
Thanks for the tips!! Btw Should we allow FFS in bass tournaments?
😂😂😂😂😂
