  • There has been a lot of perspectives provided for #Dhaakad and I had my two cents regarding the same in all the noise. I wanted this to be a game changer and the start of something special but the #KanganaRanaut #ArjunRampal and Divya Dutta starrer only delivers in style and misses the mark in substance! I hope you like the Dhaakad Movie Review & Analysis

The real problem is that the makers created a story(if we can call it that) keeping a badass female character in mind. They should've created a story first and then created a character who happens to be a female. This was the same problem with Kangana in the movie " manikarnika". Instead of celebrating Rani Laxmi Bai, she turned it into the movie celebrating kangana playing Laxmi Bai.
The best example I can give of filmmakers making a movie with a badass female character without shoving down the "FEMALE" part, is the Korean movie "The Villainess".

I feel this needs to be said although everyone is aware of it. John Wick didn't just start killing because it was his dog. It was a gift from his deceased wife which arrived a few days after her passing. It was a way of telling him to start loving again. His life's purpose was taken away from him. THAT is the motive which people largely connected with.

I understand the catalyst for the character being more deep than just a dog dying but I think my attempt at creating the parallel with Dhaakad is that sometimes the trigger is enough rather than trying to explain and repeat the same context over the period of the films storyline (the origin story of Agni is repeated consistently) rather than just building the screenplay

Even Aamir Khan , Ayushman Khurana and now Karthik Aryan has repeatative kind of roles that works for the masses. She literaaly did an indie film like Simran, an eperimental dark comedy like Judgemnetal Hai Kya , A tarantinoish political satire like revolver rani which are not entirely perfect but are bound to not attract the masses either ways. She still did those films even after giving a massy hit like Tanu weds manu returns. She did such experimental cinema because of the artist in her.

There was nothing problematic about this film.
Kangana does not have acting as her first priority. She just happens to be good at it and uses it to feed her narcissistic personality wherein she can hog the limelight and create controversies. And thus, it's not bad in her eyes as it fulfills her purpose. She signs films just because it's huge and has no famous male actor in it and I hate that she's called a lone wolf for it. Even Akshay and Salman sign "male-centric" films but do we hail them for being "lone wolves" or for not giving women enough screentime? Then, why do we appreciate Kangana for the same? Double standards? Imagine if Alia had said that she doesn't like the Khans or Kumars after delivering Raazi. Would she not have been written off for being too arrogant? Or if Deepika had announced how her role in Padmaavat was better than that of her male counterparts? And by feeling proud of not working with the Khans, she's essentially comparing herself to the likes of Katrina and Jacqueline who just can't act. But isn't Kangana a better artist than them? I'm not sure how long would producers keep giving her films when she has a success rate lower than 20%. She talks about Gangubai burning 200 crores at the box office despite knowing that she's going to carve a greater hole in her producers' pocket. Kangana likes to be known for her shitty outrageous statements and not her body of work. Good for her though, I mean no Indian actor has pulled off what she's accomplished extraordinarily: getting security on taxpayers' money for 2+ years.
Mark my words, she will either become the next Govinda (point of difference being he could actually deliver stellar performances both on screen and at the box office) or the next Smriti Irani.

I LOVE and respect her a lot for standing up and talking against the bs that she's faced in the industry it takes a lot of guts to do that, also no questions that she's one of the absolute best actresses we have... but over the years she's become her own enemy by making an enemy out of literally everyone else....she openly mocks ppl, takes unnecessary jabs for no good reason, plays her dirty politics and tries to incite violence, etc etc but then suddenly goes and says things like "Tusshar Kapoor is my biggest suporter" and praises Salman Khan and Sohail Khan to high heavens but the very next moment takes jabs at nepokids

Over stylisation and too much of Hollywood like action sequences can also spoil a film. The reason why South Korean films work despite their Hollywood like nature is because they have a certain Korean connect in their films. South Korean films feel raw and not overly stylised because of that. Films like Loop Lapeta (though a highly mediocre movie) could create that Indian connect. Though I am very glad that Hindi cinema and for that matter Indian cinema took the risk of making a female-led action movie and also huge appreciation to Kangana (though I was never her fan) for taking such a huge risk and act in such a movie. She really is a risk taker. Arjun Rampal and Divya Dutta’s performances was brilliant and the visuals, colour-grading and editing are stunning and slick. However the film suffered the fate of the film Taish, visually interesting with some amazing performances but a lack lustre story and messy climax. (Surprisingly both are from the same production company i.e. Soham Rockstar Entertainment)

    • @rvarghese3062

no harm in taking that risk or else tapsi pannu would have bagged that role ....and also newcomers and people like aayushman and rajkumar rao would not have made it or given a thought had main stream stars potrayed or played the role...it is the fresh script also that attracts audiences.....south Korean movies have a different style and great script structure that makes it likable to watch...

Basically she stands for everything that a Bollywood actor doesn't stand for. What’s worse, she’s a woman who unabashedly speaks her mind. Actors in Bollywood, especially female actors are not supposed to be so bindaas. Women especially in a male dominated industry like Bollywood are meant to toe the line. Like good Indian girls. She doesn't.
And hence people hate her. They hate her for the fact she has made it thus far. They hate her because despite being an outsider, despite being bullied for her accent, style and lineage, she has made it to the top.
It’s sad that instead of commending her on her success, most people misunderstand her and thereby hate her.

Well guess what, many actresses have spoken about the evils of film industry before Kangana. However they have used the realm of gentleness therefore not getting the airtime that Kangana gets. This is the biggest double standards that her fans have, when some other actress speaks about the evils of industry they are looked as playing the woman card irrespective of how talented they are but when Kangana says the same thing, then she is called ‘bold’, ‘brave’ and ‘outspoken’. I personally have nothing against her but I do not appreciate such duplicity by her fans. Also spare me the argument of awards because there are many talented actors in the industry who have not won a single award or have won lesser awards but still retain a huge recognition in the industry.

I'd not have given two shits for the fights if Ram Charan and NTR Jr hadn't have me invested in the bond and affection of their characters that was actually the skeleton of that movie. The story line in this movie is so haphazard and unnecessary sub plots that it leaves no stone unturned to trivialise the whole synergy of secret intelligence agency. It was just a miserable experience for me. The last twist just before the climax made it worse. It was so uncalled for, as it didn't let any resolution take place. The agony of Agni was so unrelated. As per psychology when someone makes you laugh you automatically form an ally with the person and which brings reliability. This is the trick which is used by Hollywood film makers before opening the serious sequences. Humour is essential. There is a bit of action comedy to make believe that the character is real. The scene where the local boys snatch her bag was one hope in the movie but ended up being didactic.
However, the screen presence of Divya Dutta was such a relief. Kangana was totally animated in the movie with lacking real depth. We've seen her performance so we know that she has the potential, she could have done so much better. But for me the whole idea of making an Agent out of her childhood trauma was a fault. It was less of a professional reflection and more of a redemption which brought an unnecessary angst, and this angst did not let us connect with the character. The whole character writing was feeble for Kangana. Arjun Rampal's character was a wannabe gory character, that doesn't stand the chance of retaining his presence. Those intense fighting scenes over the staircase were laughable.
To sum up I'll say, what went wrong was : character writing, story line and screenplay, and the INTENTION of the movie. This movie seems to be made in an over confidence ki acche fight sequence daal do, Kangana reaping her real image as someone who has angst for so many things and who can take over the Indian identity of Lara Croft toh movie acchi ban jayegi. This movie screams over confidence and lack of nuances. The only thing I appreciate is the cinematography. But it was only the cinematography I saw in the trailer that lured me to watch this 'juvenile' action movie 😂

Jammy I appreciate you as a reviewer and watch every single one of your videos as much as I possibly can. I've been meaning to write this for a while. I appreciate how far you have come and how impartial you are. I am essentially in the USA and couldn't live in India even if I tried. That being said, I have the unique perspective which comes from being raised in a conservative Indian culture AND a liberal American culture from which much progressive pop culture is manufactured.
Therein lies the problem. The ultra progressive and even woke direction of Hollywood and American media have taken the culture here extremely far left. The problem with Bollywood and Indian media, at least from my perspective is that it has followed suit in lockstep with the Americans when it can rather than carve its own path. So whenever a movie like Dhaakkad comes out, it seems out of place because it's way too extreme for many audiences to handle aside from the ultra liberal city dwellers. Many Indians who want more of a traditional masculine hero and feminine heroine don't care for it. The South Indian industries understand this and play it well. Look at the Malayalam industry. Their society was always more liberal than the rest of India but they had their own pace and their own stories with INDIAN characters, not a variation of Hollywood like Dhaakkad. Same exact reason RRR also worked and even Baahubali which had strong feminine female characters. Let's also talk about other Indian movies that have had a solid strong female character who has also gone through Trauma. How about Dil Se. Manisha's character was also traumatized and also went through pain but it was easy for the audience to connect because she was uniquely Indian. Period.
My point is that you can't ignore the overly conservative Indian culture (relatively compared to western culture) and its views towards media which they don't identify with. Keep in mind this is why Bollywood is being beat up these days. Their movies are overly progressive and woke and it doesn't work for the masses. Let's just be honest about it.

When she is angry, you feel angry
She's a Spy and hired to kill. So make her kill to save women and girls from trafficking. That's the story. The origin story was senseless.

Good review. IMO Kangana the actress has long been overshadowed by the women superstar persona. Female centric movies doesn't necessarily need to fit the theory "why should boys have all the fun". Tabu has been doing it for so long, without the hype which Kangana gets. I find her to be highly delusional, sample this 'as soon as Salman tweeted about her movie, he became golden hearted. In search of proving she can do what the khans & other Superstars do in their movies, Kangana the actress is fading out. BTW action can be done without having weird facial expressions, case in point Angelina Jolie in Salt and Charlise Theron in Madmax

Now haters must genuinely applaud you for being unapologetically true about this review. I will be honest, you had interviewed Kangana twice and have time and again praised her; hence I was expecting you to appreciate the film unconditionally, However, you did justice to your craft as a film critic and gave an honest opinion. I had very high hopes for the film since Kangana had proved her box office success with Tanu Weds Manu returns, Queen and Manikarnika. As a hardcore fan of her work, I was really disappointed. In fact, even a low-budget non-drama film like Chappaak could substantially stand competition against a humungous Tanhaji and managed to recover its budget through box office. Why I am also disappointed is whether the film closes way for female lead action films. I recall rumours of Deepika Padukone starring as the lead in Dhoom 4. I really doubt its possibility.

    • @kaithabjeetsingh2642
      @kaithabjeetsingh2642 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

However, irrespective of the content, I do also feel that her audience has somewhat decreased due to a controversial public persona. The people who still reminisce Queen as being a revolutionary and perhaps best female centric film, now have made a conscious decision not to watch her films irrespective of its content. Female centric films have audience among urban Indians and the affluent families but this section of society does not have the best opinion about her. They are more inclined towards films by Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar and inner circles of Bollywood and mostly possess a liberal mindset (which of course is openly criticised by Kangana). This was a common observation I had. In my opinion, currently Kangana Ranaut's film performance is hugely dependant on the socio-political demographics which might limit the kind of films she does if she wants box office success.

    • @kaithabjeetsingh2642
      @kaithabjeetsingh2642 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@lakshya varshney I think queen was revolutionary. It was a very small budget film with a crew of 15-20 people that took a risk with Kangana Ranaut who was at the lowest phase of her career. It was a female centric film for the commerical space and was a sleeper superhit.

One of the biggest demerits of Dhakad movie is inexperienced director and writer. Kangana Ranaut is a big star and she needs experienced ones. The reason why Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is gonna be a hit is because Anees Bazmee is an experienced director and most importantly he has improved a lot this time in direction as compared to Welcome Back and Pagalpanti.

What if same movie was made in South with a different actress ? Would it be categorised as a game changing cinema changing genre changing women empowerment movie and hailed as a masterpiece but because it's from Bollywood and Kangana specially no one is talking about this ?

Nope.. They would've bashed it.. For example bigil was marketed as women empowerment movie... But storys one line was son fulfilling dad's dream... They even body shame a girl 🤦... Critics and people bashed that part

I think kangana is extremely overrated at this moment. She is so full of herself. Always bully others.
She even compared herself with Tom cruise.

Maybe I am wrong but in most cases the directors of such movies are unexperienced or just one film old like attack, radhe syham or even dhakaad and I think such movies should be given to experienced directors because for a debutant this type of project could be a lot of pressure.

I think the biggest factor that stayed against this movie's success is Kangana. She made herself too controversial and way too political. There's very few people who are interested in watching her movies irrespective of the ratings and reviews
