From a technical standpoint, the "smoke" is soot or unburned fuel, so the presence or absence of soot has no bearing on "high performance" and is synonymous with poor or ĺow-end "tuning" practices that essentially just dump more fuel. Sort of like a poorly designed or built fireplace or wood oven that always smokes.
