@Amina bakir I wish people would stop this two option narrative of "its a valid excuse" or "its not a valid excuse".
We're not, or i should say, as a species who now has scientific knowledge, we are not stupid when it comes to psychology.
This grandfather just flat out told us that he fundamentally broke his sons understanding of parenting, being a child, being father, and any relationship or responsibility one may have..... and for some reason.... some fuckin weird reason, as we see all the time, people try to boil this down to "its not an excuse".
There's a very real possibility that this dude's brain never developed those emotional connections and understanding. And you can tell and adult whatever you want, but in order for them to do these things and act in these ways, they have to make sense. The childhood analogy would be the difference between cramming for a test and understanding the material.
Cramming for a test (telling an adult, this emotionally broken) will allow people to pass tests the next day. But they're not going to remember it in the long term, because they don't understand it.

That is not a contradiction at all.
You can take on all your responsibilities and more while being verbally abusive.

Haha, blame the dad, sure. But I blame the son who received $102,000 and didn't consider his own children OR there future. Did his dad teach him that, to? Should we blame his dad for that as well?
We are responsible for our own actions; it's that simple. I made myself a better person despite how I was raised, so why can't he?
As far as I'm concerned, the son is worthless. He does nothing for his kids and probably kicked the mother out when he got the settlement.

Not excusing the dad’s behavior, we can all overcome and be better than our parents but when your own father calls you worthless that’s real hard to overcome.

We don't know if he did drugs when he was younger, partied a lot, and didn't do his studies. Maybe dad is fed up with his irresponsible ways. Obviously thought son's first chance at real cash was to spend it on his teeth (which he needs a refund on). I would be a little more sympathetic if he actually spent some of it buying his kids' shoes and clothing. Or even taking them to Disneyland, just something. But nah, his teeth were more important.

I understand he's gotta be a father. But where is the mother. I guess she doesn't need to pay. That hundred thousand doesn't last long and its not constant flow of income. Even 1000 a month is way too high. I think even 500 a month is too much for 1 kid. I live in Mississippi, and I am so thrilled that I decided, when I was 14, to NEVER have children - also to NEVER get married. From my POV, getting married/divorced and having children in today's legal climate for men is bullshit. If I was forced to pay child support for any future children( which is not going to happen ), I would make sure to have the court stipulate that I turn over my monthly child support over to either the court or the state's welfare office. This way, there will be complete documentation from a third party that I can use as proof that I have been paying my child support should the mother tries any crap by taking me back to court for more money. I would also have the court stipulate that any other support beyond the normal support payments will also be turned in to the welfare department for recording of said expenses. After that, then all that I would need to do is get my visitation with my kids, and not have anything to do with the mother.

This grandfather is doing his best raising his grandchildren. These children belong to the son and he should be responsible for them, financially and raising them. The grandfather probably has been trying to teach his son since he was a child to be responsible with money, chores etc.
So people just think life is a joke, don't care about the future or money, can't budget. Some people just live for today and spend their paycheck before they get paid. So when you have an adult son who still hasn't learned and probably never change ,it's hard not to be critical of your son, especially since it's impacting his own children.

SO many parents expect their children to have adult skills to the point of perfection. And if they fall short, they criticize and discipline them. It's pathetic. Yeah, the son has a choice once he grows up as an adult But to pretend like we aren't affected by our environments and how we grow up is absolutely reckless

these settlements based on assets, inherited assets, and such, do bother me. Not that the person has to "pay", but its a 1 time "winfall" and yet the courts do not say they will "revisit" after x months. At most it should apply to 1 year, or have the option for 1 year payout of a lump sum judgement, so calculating 100k to 1881/month or 22,572, as a 1 time pay out or spread over 1 year as installments then the next year dropping down to the 15/hr.
The other thing is, i have seen this kind of thing, where the person has received a payout, for medical, father was in a car accident, badly injured, had nearly 225k in medical expenses, which included surgery, hospital stay, physio recovery. The law suit covered medical expenses and lost wages. tallying an extra 18,144. FROM that 18144, he had been paying his child support, for 6 months.. because that was essentially the 6 months of "back child support" while hospitalized. now that make sense.. BUT... the courts decided that that 225k medical... should be treated as a winfall and paid in child support... no... that money was medical expenses used for medical bills.
I've seen courts claim that "car insurance" payouts... be considerd a winfall, when its meant to buy a new car because, of course the parent doesn't NEED a car... And with things like this you wonder why many parents go into default or simply stop paying and vanish... because they are assigned support beyond their means... can't work because they had to sell everything they had to pay the support... And the courts often don't care one bit.
