I love these videos. They take me back to my youth as a bench tech with my mentor (and boss) hovering over me and directing me thru the course of a schematic and discovery of non-working components.
Great repair on what I call my dream radio. The only thing is with such a radio here in the U.S. I see a great decline in HF activity. With a world class radio like this you could call everywhere but who could you talk to. We ham guys need to use this expensive box all the time to help support our hobby. A good tuneup on a radio like this by someone with the abilities of Peter should be a must. A compromised radio that doesn't work correctly is the same as a car in bad tune. Great work Peter!!!!!!!
Another great repair and done with one of my favorite pieces of test equipment, the signal tracer. I would be lost if I didn't have a signal tracer on every bench. Indispensable tool to have on any repair bench. Back in the day of my grandfather and uncles radio/tv shop a lot of techs only had a VTVM and signal tracer and could diagnose almost any fault with those two pieces of equipment. Ahhhh, back when electronics was simple. Only thing I would change on yours is the ground lead. That non insulated braided wire is a short waiting to happen. I would stick a piece of new silicone test lead wire on there.
Yeah this signal tracers are very helpful especially in some critical situations. I have seen like you the old TV techs working with only an analogue multimeter and a signal tracer . That was fun...You are right I should fix the ground lead..Thanks for stepping in
Mike. We've spoken for hours over the last 4 years, and you never mentioned that your family had a background in the field at which you practice, and Excel. Another piece of the puzzle falls into place. Lol.
Many years ago I had a Yaesu ft 890 that I just loved. One day I was in my radio room scanning The Bands when my wife called me to dinner. I could hear some Thunder while I was eating and when I went back to my radio room my precious radio was dead. I was so sick. I do not have any diagnostic equipment at all and had no idea what went wrong. So my ft 890 went up on the top shelf of my radio room. About a year later I was reading a Blog and someone mentioned a diode in the 890 that would blow if it was near an electrical storm. It was worth a try so I called Yaesu and they sent me the part for free. I install the diode and the radio came back to life. I was so happy! that taught me a lesson to always disconnect my antennas When I Leave the Room!
Thanks Peter, I often find that weak RX faults are due to blown diodes, or faulty 455KHz ceramic filters in the I.F. path. As soon as I saw the fault my head went straight to the protection diodes... it did its job, better that a diode blows than the FETs!
My friend. I am not as patient as you!! hahaha Methodical you are my friend. My wife and I enjoy watching you. Yes, she's a keeper! And she can soldier! Oh and how I do miss the Heathkits.
many thanks peter it is always a joy to watch and learn an expert at work and fault finding isn't easy so many components in the circuit that diode going open circuited is may have been caused by a power surge that heathkit is a good tool peter may you and your family have a merry Christmas!
Ahhh, the age old question...did the protection diode fail or do its job? Not that it matters of course unless many units have the same issue. TNX Peter, great job of course. (Sneaking in on Buddy's coat tails here ;-) 73 - Dino KL0S
I had/have one of those Heath signal tracers, but I would have to dig it out from my test equipment stock. Good to see that it came in handy for you. Nice video and repair. Thanks, Peter, for posting. 73...Dan w4mnc
I am not lucky enough to own a spectrum analyser , so I enjoyed seeing you use a signal tracer, which is my main piece of equipment I thoroughly enjoyed the video,Peter, seasons greeting to you and yours. 73 Paul de M0BSW
Hello Paul, glad that you like it! Thank you for nominating me on Dave's YT channel. Have a nice Sunday my friend and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Happy new year to you . It is great to see that you can find a mistake in a modern TRX with an old Heathkit signal tracer , its great i find , very nice to see this video . Thumbs up . vy 73 de DK6DV
You don't seem to use a tracer much Peter. Its amazing how fast you found the issue with that unit!. I suppose checking voltages would have found it just as quickly going along the same path? Or perhaps you were trying to see if the rf was being demodulated?
it all depends on the task, the signal has been demodulated in the test head, otherwise you would not hear the tone. That is why we set the radio to AM. Listen at the start of the troubleshooting...
I like those yellow cables you have ..... Do you make then yourself or do you order them online ? I use the RG-316 with the smaller BNC connectors , I ordered a couple from Cable Wholesale , then I ordered 5 more from Ali Xpress , same exact coax cables as the other ones ......
Great video!!!! I have the exact problem and the exact transceiver. What I don't have is the cool testing equipment. What was the diode called that you replaced and do you have to order it through Yaesu? Thanks
I wish I could remember what is so special about a PIN diode besides the fact that they have an interstitial layer of undoped silicon between the P and N layer.
Hello Piter, I need a help in repairing the Kenwood TS 430s transceiver, when broadcasting in the emission of ssb without modulation, the current is 30A, if you have any idea what can be damaged, thank you Mirek in advance.
Peter if the radio was supplied Via surge protector would this not protect the diode from the radio I know when using computer it must be powered by a surge protector to protect the power supply in the computer another interesting and learning video * Merry Christmas and happy new year for 2018*
Hi John, well if it was damaged by I surge it would be handy but we don't know exactly what happened. I might have been high rf power into the front end...Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and yours.
HELLO , have a YAESU FT1000MP (not mark5 ) , when turn on the transceiver, primary display reicever frequency sled, but the secondary display reicever still remain on the selected frequency . Can you suggest me where I can try to see into circuits of rtx, and possible cause of these malfunction? Many thanks advance, you if you did help me to resolve these problem. From graziano, italy, december, 22 2020 .
That's what makes this radio great! I have this exact FT-1000MP Field Mk. 5 (ya long name!) and the new FTDX-3000. What is only one button on the 1000 might be several button pushes or into the menu system for on the 3000 (or other "new" radios). Sure the 3000 is better in most respects but the 1000 is a darn good radio. And the 1000 also has two receivers so you can listen to two stations at the same time and easily switch and jump in when there is an opening. Buttons and knobs are a great thing!
You will have to let us know when you fix something for a young man! I would guess that most of your customers would fall under the "old man" category.
I'm sure your if post was in jest... but if not... 'old man' is an old colloquial term in amateur radio, and refers to 'the other operator' regardless of age. The term goes way back to the early days of amateur radio I think

Hello John, yes troubleshooting can be very tricky and I'm happy to teach a little bit here on my channel. Merry Christmas to you and yours 73
That was fun Peter. Great troubleshooting using a vintage piece of test gear. Thanks for sharing as always.

Any time my friend. Probably a voltage spike in this case and the diode sacrificed it's self.
Yeah the IT12 is fun...Thanks for watching my friend 73
LOL the age old question haha. Thank you Dino have a nice Sunday 73

Great work, I too have a same heathkit as yours and very handy, Nice radio maybe too close to another transmitter was the fault
Yes the Heathkit is very handy, Dennis. You are right may be to close to another transmitter. Thanks for stepping in 73

Good Job Peter, well done, Merry Christmas from England....Fred. g4vvq
Thank you Fred! Merry Christmas to you and yours 73
I wish I could remember what is so special about a PIN diode besides the fact that they have an interstitial layer of undoped silicon between the P and N layer.
PIN diodes can be used for dc controlled hf attenuators..
I had one of these FT1000MP's, it was a nice radio...
I think it is still a nice radio...Thanks for stepping in 73
Nice job Peter big thumbs up mate 👍
Thank you Allan

You are welcome Michael! Thanks for watching 73
Why was the red TX light on solid above the main tuning knob at the end?
Hi!!! My FT 1000 mp does not transmit on 40,80,160 meters. All other bands okay. Any ideas why? 73’ Stefano
Please, my field is with the main rx with little gain; the rx 2 is normal; where can i make the correction? Maurício.
