For context, the initial question was something like this:
I know the 'Wrong One to Fuck With' album cover had to be toned down, as Relapse worried the more violent version of the cover that was released (not referring to the initial concept he talks about in our other video) would be perceived as misogynistic, etc., yet just five years ago 'Reign Supreme' had a bonus track called "Dead Whores Love to Fuck." Do you think the social climate has had a drastic shift?

I don't mean this to sound like a half-assed attempt at justifying humans' behavior by comparing them to other animals like Jordan Peterson's pathetic bumbling in which he says that because lobsters have a dominance hierarchy based on physical size and aggression and those behaviors involve serotonin, which also exists in humans, somehow social structures in which females submit to physically powerful males is just the logial way for things to be. I'm also not saying that aggression is the preferable way to take care of loved ones. But again, it makes sense.

When your dealing with death metal you can’t expect it to have positive messages. It’s an aggressive style of music that is supposed to be harsh. That is the object. So I do agree with Trey. Getting mad about the aggressiveness of this music would be like getting mad that Adele sings about love, Adele sings about love because it fits the music. It matches the mood of the music.

Love DF and been a big fan since the 90’s, but I have to disagree with listening to extreme music and feeling the urge to hurt people. Not my scene- and I would argue that 99% of people at DF shows are all about enjoying the sick ass show and music, not violence.

I was in line at a show the other night and heard someone say they weren't going to support a band any more, because they saw the singer throw a cigarette butt on the ground. I was in shock. In the late 80s and early 90s when death metal was at its best i remember all the posers wore airwalks, wallet chains with their hat bill turned up and listened to hatebrerd and sick of it all. Just lost a lot of respect for this dude. Back when he was listening to them i was bangin at cannibal corpse, morbid angel and napalm death concerts. I bet he has a wallet chain on now and a flannel tied around his waist.

When someone commits an act of physical or symbolic violence - especially when based on race (Disma, Watain, Taake) as well as sex or sexual orientation (Emperor, Dissection, ), we must not just fuck off because that person may have (co)written a song we like. We must not just fuck off when we learn that real people are associated with real organizations that spread holocaust denial claims (Marduk).

Kevin Berstler and how many people's lives have been directly affected and hindered by any of the music of the bands you mentioned? And what song lyrics of any of the band's you mention support what you claim them to be espousing? At the end of the day, people whining and complaining about aspects of "extreme metal" that they have no understanding of (i.e. people calling bands like Taake nazis and Marduk holocaust deniers) only generates more traffic for the band's themselves (who likely will never change their aesthetic or presence because of internet criticisms.) Extreme metal was never meant to be an all inclusive place, nor was it meant to be something that can be marketed to everyone like pop music. The problem lies in the fact that, nowadays, people who shouldn't be involved with a certain subculture in the first place have taken it upon themselves to police an area they don't belong. Much like church lady's did with anything "satanic" in the 80s and 90s. Except now rather than "they must worship satan" it's "they must be nazis" regardless of the fact that 99% of the time these claims lack any substantial evidence to back up the accusation.

Hi Brad! As we know this is a tough question. It should in theory, no matter if I agree with it or no, that is what freedom of speech is. Now I will never support NSBM or shit like that but is their right to write music like that. This said, lately, everyone is being accused of being a Nazi (we all know who is leading the charge there) or rape and sexual harassment so lot of these words are losing punch imo. But yes this is my opinion. Canada (as far I can see it) is having trouble with extreme leftists and their ideology that can infinitely defragment society to the individual which is good in some aspects but horrid on others. If there is a limit to the "extreme", then there is no extremity at all. It's the same thing as free speech. If you put a limit on it then it's no longer free. The point of extreme music is and always was offending light hearted people. If you don't like it well there you go, mission accomplished, pick your shit up and get the fuck off. strongly agree! Dying Fetus are a fantastic band, I love their early releases the most, Purification Through Violence, Killing on Adrenaline, I was totally blown away by their most recent album Wrong One To Fuck With, which is among one of their best releases yet!

Metal actually does help me out emotionally. It lessens my anxiety and if depression gets to me, I flip on some aborted and start headbanging and usually feel better. In a way, it does make me feel warm and fuzzy inside :)

The extreme metal scene definitely isn't the place for crybabies. If the scene changed to better suit these people, it would cease to be extreme metal. All the fans who make this scene what it is would abandon it because the scene abandoned them in favor of people who probably don't even listen to metal. I don't like football, but you don't see me bitching about how it needs to change to cater more to my sensibilities because I understand that it just isn't for me. I mean, I'm not a huge fan of gore or anything (not offensive but can get boring), but when I try to explain metal to friends and family -its like talking to a brick wall- they ask what I like about metal, metal in general. I suppose it comes down to aggression, and part of that aggression is that you have people speaking whats truly on their mind, what they are truly passionate about, regardless of who it offends. You have some songs which can go against the grain and express really unpopular or offensive positions, but they don't care. Thats where metal gets its aggression, its appeal. Because it is breaking the rules. It is offensive. And the bands know it but thats the great part - they don't have to care.

While I disagree with the decision, I understand it from the record company's perspective. They're not afraid of offending metalheads, they just don't want the album to be pulled off the shelves of certain retailers or streaming sites because some SJW who's never heard of death metal before got wind that some the cover was offensive and decided to stage a protest.

I'm curious about his meaning. If he means people offended by anti-christian content, or people offended by the violence of lyrics, then sure I agree with him. But I personally can't stand the sort of anti-pc, anti-social justice mindset in a lot of extreme metal. So much of society is built on taking away social liberties of certain groups of people, and metal was started as a fight against that. It was for the people disenfranchised by society. If today's metal can't still stand by non-white, non-straight, non-male people, then it's failing in catering to the disenfranchised. Metal is not music for the masses. It is a very precise extract from genres like classical music, rock (and blues as well), sounds of nature (atmosphere, animals, water) as well. Metal is related to "agressive and brutal and sad" subjects like war, illnesses, pollution, mind control (religious and political propaganda), controversy, loss and personal tragedy.
Metal is not about bitches, cars, money and clothes... well there was a genre in metal called glam that portrait those subjects in their lyrics and that was a shame, because the music behind it was very good (funk-rock, virtuoso related).
