Was scared I was going to get this wrong, but 1 was like a Time Machine deep & no pun intended has the vibe. As much as I’d love one it’s outta my range, so I’m looking at the Mayer voodoo vibe jr & and fulltone custom shop which is a tougher choice 🤔
I'm sure both of those options are very good! When I make videos about gear on this channel, it's always with a little trepidation. I don't really like guitar channels that make anyone feel bad about anything or show off expensive toys without much of a lesson or purpose to it. Bear in mind all my stuff was the amalgam of over 30 years of doing this. When I did the comparison on camera, what it taught and re-affirmed for me was that all this stuff sort of does the same thing, and the subtle differences we get into as players are cool (and I'm certainly glad to have the R.M. stuff for sure), but ultimately not as big of a deal to the end-listener as it is to most of us. I guess the best then becomes whatever inspires us most when we're the ones using it as the guitar players.
@thefretboardplayground well said whatever works you think i may take a look at something in-between price wise like the effectrode one I have their tube drive & its excellent 👌or maybe a fulltone version. Ebay will decide!!!
The vibe rabbit hole. Always loved the voodoo vibe 1, but takes up lots of real estate. When prices got crazy, I sold mine and went to a Jam pedals vibe, which I think is really great (but less versatile). It has the 'deep' throb though. In the interest of saving space, you can also get some really vibe-y sounds out of the Flint v2 on the tremolo side. Can you share more about your preferred overdrives? Thanks for your video!
That's great to hear about. I've never owned a Flint but am aware they're spectacular. I've never played through anything Strymon that wasn't crazy-good. My favorite overdrive of all-time (or more accurately, just the one I've used for nearly 25 years) flew sort of under the radar even in the boutique realm, even though they have a lot of fans are are still in business. Pat Bergeson got a Menatone Red Snapper sometime around the early 2000s and told me so I went into the now extinct Rock Block Guitars on Elliston Place down from the Exit In, intending to get one too, but bought a Menatone Blue Collar Overdrive instead because it had a little bit more gain and was more up my alley with Strats. That pedal has been on my board pretty much ever since and has a Sharpie date of '01 on the inside back cover. It's not at all a transparent overdrive. About 20 years later (literally, that long) an exceptionally generous student gifted me a Klon KTR. It's really, really good. I keep both on hand still but now tend to use the KTR more because I was able to move into a situation where I could stick amps in a separate room and actually dial them into the sweet spot, so the KTR gets used as a really good transparent boost to let the amps do their thing. But if I didn't have that, the J. Rockett Archer is really, really good. So good that if I wasn't given a KTR, I'd save the money and be happy. I'm actually intending to make a video about that exact subject. Last, as often as anything, a good fuzz pedal with the guitar volume dialed back. My favorite germanium fuzz is by MJM FX. It's the "London Fuzz" with the germanium transistor. It cleans up magnificently and will go from clean to mid-between dirt up to Monterey Pop kinds of Hendrix tones. I say I'm not THAT into gear, but realistically I'm as decadent as anyone who's been at this for over 3 decades and in the end I am bonkers for gear...I just try to practice moderation and balance in the midst of it. Can't believe I almost forgot...one of my favorites I never owned but have recommended to others for literally over a decade. How's this for an undiscovered sleeper? There was a builder in TN that went by the name CMat Mods. Sadly his shop flooded and he never got the business back off the ground but while it was around they made one called the SignaDrive. They're still very very affordable on Reverb. And I still probably owe myself one but moderation. I absolutely loved the SignaDrive though.
@@thefretboardplayground Thank you for sharing! Used the KTR for a long time and parted ways with it. There is a great and very affordable pedal called the Bad Bob (single knob version -- less is more!) that analogmike makes. It made my KTR sound lifeless. You should 100pct check it out and lmk what you think. It's not 'clean', it adds just the right amt and slams the FE of whatever amp you are using. Brad Sarno also makes a really nice pedal called the Earth Drive and it's very good w teles and strats -- if you love your KTR, give this a try. They make a mini version now. Also, different, but very cool for strats -- Blackstone Appliances OD (mosfet). I learned of from Todd Sharp -- a killer player. For me now, its mainly a guitar into a nobels or lightspeed a basic delay Carbon Copy or Analogman then into the flint or a EQ Devices Dispatchmaster (amazing verb). Trying to get the most out of just the guitar, some volume knob jiggering and a great tweed. Less tap dancing, more learning how to make the most with the hands and ears. Thanks again for sharing all this great material.
@@adamisaacson620 I love Todd! They've been taking care of my amps for over 20 years over there, and yes, great player, great guy, great tone! Thanks for the Bad Bob recommendation (also the Earth Drive). I'll definitely look into those!
