The Injustice of Imprisoning a Minor for Petty Theft in Nigeria It is deeply troubling that a 14-year-old boy was sentenced to prison and given a death sentence by hanging for something as minor as stealing a fowl. This kind of punishment is not only disproportionate to the crime, but it also highlights a serious miscarriage of justice and the failure of the legal system to protect the rights of minors. How can a child who, by law, is not yet considered capable of fully understanding the consequences of his actions, be sentenced to such an extreme punishment? Under international conventions like the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Nigeria is a signatory, children are to be treated differently from adults in the eyes of the law. These protections exist to ensure that children, regardless of their background, are given a chance to learn, reform, and grow-especially when the crime committed is non-violent and petty, like stealing a fowl. It is disheartening that now, at 32 years old, this man is still suffering from an unjust decision made when he was just a child. It is important for the Nigerian legal system to ensure that the rights of the youth are upheld, and the constitution should protect children from harsh and unjust punishments. The government and society must advocate for reform and ensure that the youth are made aware of their rights, so no child endures this kind of injustice again.
What a shame 😭😭 how many wealthy and/or influential people in that country got away and still are getting away with more severe and horrible crime? So only the poor are judged, and harshly for that fact?
This is an abject injustice. I’m glad the corrupt judge is sacked. He should loose his retirement as well. All the legal cases brought under his should be subjected to a review. He’s is a renounce criminal in the justice system.
Some Nigerian judges and lawyers are so wicked police is better than them Who knows how many people who must have lost their lifes through this kind wicked judgement.
It's great that you take pride in giving a detailed analysis of issues in the public scope. Have you done that with this case? If a robbery is committed with arms isn't that armed robbery in Nigeria? Irrespective of what you steal. Can a person be sentenced to death for armed robbery in Nigeria? Those should be the facts being discussed in your "analysis". Simply labelling it as sentenced to death for stealing a fowl is disingenuous.
@Wealthgod10 First off I don't know what the law considers to be a "minor" in Naija. Secondly yes if the robbers are armed there is a threat to life. What would have happened if the property owner accosted them while the robbery was ongoing? Lastly my major grouse is why the story is being portrayed as simply the "theft of a fowl" when the content writers know quite well there's more to it than that.
The boy needs justice and compensation for wasted years in jail. and the judge should be sent to jail for unprofessionalism and abuse of power. split all his property and give half to the boy's parent for their pain over the years
Nigeria Professional Class are willing collaborator with the Nigeria political class to oppress and under develop Nigeria. Nigeria the country of the unfortunate, governed by the unwanted for the benefit of the undeserving.
The boy was not among those that stole fowl and eggs. The owner of the chicken said that and the boy is the only child of his parents. Point of correction they are 7 in number. They only convicted 2 boys and this boy is not among them. Nobody carried weapons or kill or injure anyone.
There is a difference in stealing, there is armed robbery with weapon and theft, our rule of law is easy to play, our politicians simply play to the law
This is what Dele Farotimi wrote in his book that those in authority don't want us to know about. The rut in the judiciary has long been in the making.
You got this wrong, he was not part of those who stole the fowl, infact they were seven boys,5 boys were released .the man who owns the fowl, who happen to be like a relative of segun ,said segun was not part of the boys.during the case the owner of the fowl roped segun, also the dpo ask segun father to bring 30k,but he was able to raise 20k,the dpo said segun will go to prison if the parent did not bring 30k.eventually,segun parent went to report to a politician, who ask for his release, but the dpo refused, he said he has no children and he has no mercy, so he brought out weapons and arranged them infront of segun and other boys ,took pictures of them and parade them as robbers. It was segun and a boy that were sentence to death, the other boy develop mental problems and was later realised to his parents, segun studied and graduated in prison.
Ok oh.... tomorrow they will say Dele Farotimi is wrong.... Nigeria and its criminal justice system... The judge of death sentence for fowl and egg stealing should also be tried... Maybe Dele forget to put this one in chapter 6
Na wahoo only in Nigeria someone can be kpoof for stealing a chicken but the ones stealing the future of Nigerians are walking freely. Chaiiiiiiii who swear for Nigeria?
😂😂😂😂😂 Use your head ooo, I no want call name 🤪🤪🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 no worries big bro we know who them be no need to call names. Just the state where them come from speaks volume.
The is suppose to be sentence d to life imprisonment with no gratuity and pension at all.. like Barrister who is prison now for writing a book based on fact going on in our Judicial system... Justice is not meant for a common man is meant for the highest bidder in Nigeria today....
So basically two armed robbers attacked a police man's house (with a knife and gun) , stole some items, were caught and sentenced to death in a state where the punishment for armed robbery is death..... Noted
Injustice at it’s fullest. May it is better to embezzle billions of Naira because the law may not apply , it only applies to the poor. This is unfortunate.
@ donAza you said there were armed with a wooden gun and a sword. That’s armed robbery and the punishment for that is death in Nigeria regardless of what was stolen. Read and stop misinformation.
This boy need justice from every single Nigeria old or young, woman or children
Dele Farotimi is right
The judge is supposed to be sentenced too
Yes he needs to be jailed for twenty years.
Dele farotimi and his book is vindicated.... Justice for them both 😪

What a shame 😭😭 how many wealthy and/or influential people in that country got away and still are getting away with more severe and horrible crime? So only the poor are judged, and harshly for that fact?
You are doing well my brother.
This is an abject injustice. I’m glad the corrupt judge is sacked. He should loose his retirement as well. All the legal cases brought under his should be subjected to a review. He’s is a renounce criminal in the justice system.
Do these types of judges have a heart?😢
Useless judges everywhere.
This is evil at the lowest. The judge who sentenced him will suffer and find no rest for his life on earth and beyond.
Some Nigerian judges and lawyers are so wicked police is better than them

At the end of the day.. was there a threat to lives? Or bodily harm? Death penalty for a minor at that time was too harsh!
@Wealthgod10 First off I don't know what the law considers to be a "minor" in Naija. Secondly yes if the robbers are armed there is a threat to life. Misplaced priorities
This is what Dele Farotimi wrote in his book that those in authority don't want us to know about. The rut in the judiciary has long been in the making.
Fela Anikulapo sang a song about stuff like this. Pen robbers are treated like royalty while armed robbers are executed.
What a wicked judge
Naija 😢😢😢
Lord have mercy

So basically two armed robbers attacked a police man's house (with a knife and gun) , stole some items, were caught and sentenced to death in a state where the punishment for armed robbery is death..... Noted
He kidnapped and probably killed an innocent fowl, so the thief judge also sentenced him to death
😮The judge na thief
Sad
Let's not be sentimental. This is a case of armed Robbery, not stealing
And so? Who was killed to warrant death sentence?
You may be surprised that they did not carry arms to steal chicken. It may be police manipulation!
Exactly what I was thinking how would someone come with gun and sword to steal fowl
Bruh life was worth a chicken in Nigeria crazy.
