    My 1960 B has some of the best steering feel, brake feel and shifter engagement I've ever felt. The pedal placement is asking you to heel and toe every downshift (and you need to because of the lack of power). The way the car turns in and stops (even with the drums) is mind blowing. To quote Ferris Bueller - "if you have the means i highly recommend it"

      @coleenyart538 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also have a 1960 B. I agree with everything you just said (although, brakes are a bit uninspiring sometimes). I have watched STG for a long time now so I got very excited when I saw the thumbnail. Like most guys in their mid 20s, I like my fast cars, but the feeling of a raw drivers car like the 356 is a different kind of excitement.

    Tip for classic cars at start up: don’t do that throttle on/off thing in a carbureted car.. just give it some throttle/rev’s and hold the rpm for a while.

    Sam @seenthroughglass, I say with cap in hand, we've got 7 Porsches in the stable, many of them vile kit, but I tell you, if I could only keep one, the 356 Rallye (with a Wilhoit big bore motor build) is the one that never leaves! They are fantastic in the twisties, well balanced when on power thru tight apex, and have looks that make grown men weep and lasses swoon!! I say abandon all hope and bloody well get one, come vacation here in the Americas with it (Georgia to be exacting), and join me and my lass as we put on another invite only, Porsche only event (with accompanying film crew) in the Appalachians in Spring of 2024!!

    For starting, when you pump the gas on the 356 it is filling up a small leather cup with fuel and each pump of the pedal pushes that fuel into the engine. Holding the pedal to the floor will no longer prime the engine with the 'accelerator pump' and will instead primarily put air into the engine to dry it back out, until enough it starts, at which time the engine makes its own vacuum to pull air and fuel in. If it's flooded and not starting, put it to the floor to stop flooding and evaporate or burn fuel.

    Sam just such a Porsche 356 B but black and red interior, dad's old work colleague had. He bought it new in 1963 and drove it daily even in the winter up here in Kiruna Sweden, he worked at LKAB which is a mining company and he bought the car after inheriting money. The last time I saw it was in the early 1980s and it was out of storage the whole time, it never rusted partly because here in Kiruna we don't use road salt and he cared for the car like his own child.

    Dear Sam,
    IMO, you should think about one with a few mods, like a disc brake conversion - although the C had them standard from factory - even one with an uprated engine. A bit less money, more usable, and dare I say enjoyable, and the same vibe. If you really get bitten by the 356 bug, you could even consider dropping in a 2L flat 6 from an early 911, making sure the mod is reversible and keeping the 'original' engine in storage.
    The great thing about the 356 is also that it's fairly roomy and you fit.

    If you keep on hammering the throttle, you flood the carburettors which means the car won’t start. Holding the throttle pedal down is the only way to clear them and allow the correct fuel/air ratio to mix in the carburettors. You learnt that very quickly when all cars were carbureted pre fuel injection days. Lovely old Super 90 which will only continue to appreciate in value. 😊

    I almost purchased a 356 B for $3k in the mid-seventies but backed out when the seller told me he had just spent $1800 for a new crankshaft (that amount didn't include labor). Just like today, you could purchase a steeply-depreciated, used foreign beauty (when they were still beautiful) but go bankrupt trying to keep them running. (A friend specialized in repairing XK-series Jags and would charge $5k just for a tuneup--it was nearly impossible to properly adjust the carburetors, among many other challenges.)

    There's no such thing as too much 356. I love the look. Not practical for me, not to mention the expense. But so cool. So classic. That must have been a thrill. Side note, Paul Tarsey, publisher of the best podcast, historic racing news, said recently, in a moment of what surely must have been insanity, that he thought the 356 is not a good looking car. I love Paul, but he's wrong, they are gorgeous from every angle. Porsche are so unique as a company, with the classic program. They're really committed to keeping all the old cars on the road. Which is just excellent. I'm restoring my beloved 996.1, slowly, and making good progress, she's a solid daily with 98k miles and mechanically very sound. The funnest car I've driven since my beetle in the 80s, my 335, more engaging then my series 1 Elise or my old Miata. You can steer it with the gas pedal all day. Timeless, smooth, curvy with just enough torque to keep up with traffic, and after about 3500 rpm, that sound and the peaky hp, delicious. New cars, even sadly, 911s, are mostly all sharp angles and edges. And they are far too fast imho, unless you're at the track. I can have more fun in a 356 or 912 then in a modern, 500hp sports car. Give me the classics, the 356, the E-Type, the 911... I hope you get a 356 and drive it like you stole it. Or make an outlaw, call Rob Emory he'll hook you up. It's only money.

    Sam
    You need to drive these cars differently to get the best out of the rear weight bias. Its slow in and fast out on corners using the traction too pull you round the bend and don’t, as you did, brake mid corner. Also, its 2nd gear and then into the third gear as you come out of the corner not 3rd all the way round. What you are looking for is smooth driving and avoid the brakes as you proceed. Use the front side windows for air pointed towards you and keep the revs up- you were constantly dropping them down the range. Also, regardless do fit and use seat belts; that steering wheel isn’t friendly if you make sudden contact. The only error you made on starting was not depressing the accelerator fully on start up as it doesn’t have an electric fuel pump. It was difficult to start as you drove, got it hot, stopped and the fuel in the carbs evaporated, so they were empty when you came to restart- a schoolboy error but easily made. Finally, slow down the gear change - its not a modern box and you need to give it time to engage so a more measured 1 down to 2 and uoto 3 as you say those words to yourself would save the box and ensure clean easy gear changes. The C is by far the easiest to run and with better stopping it has the edge on all the others. take 4 cam is extremely exotic and needs basically constant and thorough maintenance and it would frustrate you- plus they are 4 times more expensive. if you are in the UK and need help looking at one or want to try out a rhd C let me know. lee
