    Taking a drink along with you. It's like going out to a bar in Scotland and listening you educate me on this scotch. I love it.

    Just opened my bottle (recently acquired) in tribute to my father (RIP 1930-2016) also because it was probably the first bottle i ever tried & also a gift to my family long time ago. It is finally available in France so I'm glad about it...The late 2019 or 2020 batch I have is wonderful, amazing complexity there, and I recognized the Cragganmore style in it (it is the heart of this whisky, so I'm glad about it). No overpowering oak here, no short finish, rather decent...Very complex...Super balanced, I'll review it later on after some tries...Thanks Ralfy for reminding us of this little wonder ! Cheers !

    Grand Old Parr is probably the best scotch I've tried, including scotch that is much more expensive, and this is from someone who prefers single malt, be it bourbon or scotch. Always neat!

    This was one I tried back in the day... Grand Old Parr, as it was known then (12yrs.) One of the better of the blends, imo. Comparable to Pinch in quality.

    I gave it 89 pts. back in the day, in between, Chivas 12 (88 pts.) and Pinch 15 (90 pts.) That was 20 years ago. I have tried the Chivas 21, but for the age, I was somewhat disappointed. I thought the wood was too prominent, but there was complexity present, along with the expected smoothness. I would give that about 92. This makes me looking forward to my recently purchased bottle of Chivas 18 - it may well prove better than the 21 (!) I'll be placing up my review on your Chivas 18 site.

    Ralfy. On another note, what is your experience of a blended Whisky I tried in my late 20's early 30's in Ecuador. I had almost completely forgotten about it. And I remembered that I used to love this blend... House of Lords! The researches I have made always take me to a dead end. Please tell me this scotch Whisky is still around, still good and still revered.
    Thank you Ralfy!
    Keep on the great job you are doing, from all of us: Malty, Alma Matters, Maniac, Maestros!

    Ralfy, are in your plans in the near future to re-evaluate some of the reviews that you have made since the beginning of your site? Nobody better than you knows that quality in blends and malts do change, maybe some have gone bad, maybe some have improved? To the extent that a re-evaluation is in order.
    After all, to me at least, your reviews have become "an industry standard"!
    Thank you Ralfy once more.

    so curious for this one ..... i had an old parr superiour (18 y apparently), and it is one of the best blends i ever had ..... it totaly suprised me with its spicy notes like no other ..
    i recently bought this 12 yo to exlpore , from a specialiced shop
    mine has a diffent label and box also .
    the number on the box is also intresting (LLAA00000031) hoping this is an early version of it from the 80's or one of the first batches of 0,50 releases

    Ralfy,
    Being in Louisiana (where state law prohibits internet/online distilled spirit sales and such sales are only allowed through state sanctioned distributors), we can't get Old Parr Bl Sc. However, we can get Buchanans Bl Sc. While in this mini series of blends, could you include Buchanans 12 yr Bl Sc. Thanks.
    Thanks, for your efforts about whiskys. I've learned a ton from you about whisky.

    reminds me of late 1980s-1990s white horse whiskies that i've been drinking lately because of the sherried and smoky notes also it's mouthwatering like older white horses maybe is some lagavulin in old parr? we will never know ...

  • @MrKinaidos
    @MrKinaidos 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    That closed up on first drams character comes from a layer of high lignin content whisky at the top of the bottle. Treating the first 3-4 drams of whisky in a bottle as a way to work one's way into waht it has to offer is the way to go. This is one reason why you should taste the bottle not the dram. E.g. I liked Springbank at first sip, but I came to love it only after taking a bottle home. Whisky is like that Actually everything is like that.

    Now that's it's reviewed. Ralfy, the whopping "raisin" smell+taste I got reminds me of the same smell from JW black label and Talisker. Would Talisker be in this blend? Also the G.O.P. I poured was the colour of Lagavulin... yours is a lighter colour. Anyway it wasn't a bad whisky at all but I think the bottle at my dads house was just too old and the alcohol was too low...

    Hi Ralfy, You mentioned grain whisky in this vblog. Any recommendations for readily available grain whiskies or blended whiskies with a prominent grain influence that we can learn from? In Japan I can get Nikka Single Cask Coffey Grain but it is very expensive. Why are grain whiskies hard to find? They don't seem that popular.

  • @rayraymond2952
    @rayraymond2952 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lol. I am also a Scotch malty type of guy. However, every so often, some nice good, but inexpensive American Whys (of which there are many inexpensive, but really good Am whys) and some good Irish Whys (of which there are a pretty fair number) are a good change of pace. Such diversions allow one to better appreciate the fine qualities of those wonderful, dear, and malty Scotches, both blends and Singles. Slainte. :)

    Ralfy - In light of your opening comments about review requests, I would like to make a request...
    Perhaps my favorite every day Scotch is Highland Park 12. I've heard nothing but glowing reviews for HP 18. I know that it's a bit pricey, but is HP 18 a bottle you would consider purchasing and reviewing? I know you recommended it in one of your earlier videos, but I'm very curious to hear your tasting and nosing notes. Cheers!

    Ralfy, Do you have a quick opinion on Hogshead Blended Malt Sc Why 43%. Yesterday, I had an opportunity to purchase a 750 ml bottle for $30US in the New Orleans, Louisiana area. However, despite having the bottle in my basket, I returned it and didn't purchase it, because I had not seen a review on Hogshead. Thanks. PS: As an aside, yesterday, I did purchase Ballantines 12yr Bl Sc and Pig Nose 5yr Bl Sc. Both were most pleasant and enjoyable drams. On these, I used your reviews. Thanks.

    I recently found a MacDonald Greenlees whisky here in Santiago Chile called Sandy Mac. I picked up a litre bottle for 7900 pesos/£7.90. Apparently it is a 6 year old whisky that, like Old Parr, is no longer distributed in the UK. I wouldn't recommend Sandy Mac though as it has a nasty cheap alcohol like flavour. Also, I managed to pick up a great double pack offer in a local supermarket which consists of a bottle of JW Black and a litre bottle of Old Parr for the price of 29.990 pesos (around £30.00). Whisky here is generally cheaper than in the UK.
    If that's not a good enough reason to move to Latin America then I don't know what is. :o)

    Ralfy, thank you for that great review on The Grand Old Parr scotch whisky!
    I have information from a book called "The World of Whisky" by Gilbert Delos. It shows there that Grand Old Parr Is the son of "Grand Old Malts" like Cragganmore and Glendullan
    A Whisky that is revered up to mythical proportions, not only in Colombia, but in Ecuador (were the boss reference is "oh so true") as well!
    I want to know, if given the option to chose as a gift, between a bottle of Grand Old Parr or Johnnie W

    Ralfy, Aug 10,12, for $30US, bought Hogshead Bl Malt 43%. On the first two tastings, it was terrible: taste & aroma like old, bad cardboard. 3rd & 4th, began to open up & taste & smell better. By 6th & 7th time, finally got good & made sense: taste&aroma: nice Islay malt with some sweetness. 8th & later tasting, it's well nigh great. Early on, bottle shock. Later, with oxygen, opened up nicely. AstorWines says HH's:70%Lagavulin/30%Linkwood. Inverheath Ltd, Edinburgh. Try it. No disappointment.

    i get this with some rums. i work in spirit industry and try allot of products, so its not a medical issue on my behalf. I can actually sell a bottle and know ill get a headache. seems to be the real mollasses heavey rums. might be the quality of the spirit also. if u are only drinking cheaper blends then maybe go to a bar and try a nip of something light like a lowland (ie Glenkinchie) and see what happens.
