  • The sounds of a Helmeted Hornbill calling in Borneo. The spectacular call of the Helmeted Hornbill is sadly a disappearing sound in South-east Asia's rainforests. The typical call of this species is a long series of accelerating ‘toop’ sounds which build up over a few minutes and climax with a maniacal cackling laugh.
The Helmeted Hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil) is a very large species of hornbill found in southern Thailand & Myanmar, Peninsula Malaysia, Borneo & Sumatra. Helmeted Hornbills can grow up to to 1.7 metres in length (including the 50cm long tail) and have a bizarre leathery, wrinkled face with a hard bony casque on top of the bill.
Sadly, the Helmeted Hornbill is now considered critically endangered, mainly due to poaching for its casque. Habitat loss is also a major issue affecting this species as it relies on very old, large trees with hollows for nesting.
I recorded the Helemeted Horbill calls in this video spectrogram in Sabah, Borneo. This sample is an excerpt from track 5 of the album "Heart of Borneo - Tawau Hills"wildambience.com/albums/heart...

I was not expecting the end to be quite so enthralling. Beautiful recording, Marc.

Yeah it's a great ending. When I hear them in the wild I always like to stop and listen until the end, although sometimes it can take almost 5 minutes of build up to get there!

Apparently, this bird has quite the macabre folklore. The story goes that for reasons unknown, a man wishes to do harm to his mother-in-law. So, he took an axe and began chopping down the stilts holding his in-laws kampung house till it fell down in a big crash. Amidst the ruin, the man cackled like a maniac.
As punishment, he was cursed to become the helmeted hornbill, known amongst the old Malay folk as tebang mentua (He who chopped down his mother-in-law), doomed to listen to his actions till the end of time.
The call has been described as the sound of axe on timber, followed by an eerie, satisfied laughter.

I found this after reading an article that the sound of this bird is similar to "maniacal laughter", and I have to say that I truly agree 😂 Would be horrifying to hear it at night in the forest!
