This series changed the shape of my life. I grew up with his books in my house but to hear him speak was like gathering around a patriarch for story time. Also, shoutout to this interviewer, who genuinely listened and showed an interest in the topic. I've yet to see a better interviewer.

i studied parts of our Bible, indian upanishads sociology, anthropogy... i got luckier and luckier... simultaneously almost got deep into The bhagavad gīta As It Is - bhaktivedānta... and at least one of j campbell's oversize books. the professor has a mystical ability to find images of the essential ineffable. i would not conceive as "possible" the images from around our planet that he could find And Place Properly in the puzzle of human "upanishad": our moving firmly UP to God - and to The Personal God. he Accurately identifies God as a person ! with a personality.
i am a catholic christian harekrishna - and it All Fits.
lucky was i also with my harekrishna teacher: father Siddha Vidya, a student of ac bhaktivedānta prbhpd. a tremendous lineage esp in our days of Lies and Deceit.
maybe prof cambell had the chance to read Valmiki's Rāmāyana, or the mahabhaharata - sacredtexts.com - maybe the cream of vedānta the Sr.mād Bhagavatam - vedabase.com.
      very compelling

I fondly recall my books by Campbell, marked up and highlighted. I discovered him on PBS in University and was hooked. I bpught every book he wrote and devoured them. Young people need Campbell more than ever. They have been stripped of who they are, and Campbell can lead them back home to themselves.

synchronicity runs the universe. the trillions of chemical reactions each second going on in your body right now that are keeping you alive are run by the synchronicity of this universe. when you realize this, you will no longer fear death because you can never die. your body stops, but you, never. the universe is a wonderful place.

@louiscolborn6715 i once thought as you did - sarcastically. There's a reason even for that. Even if there isnt a literal "soul collector" even if there's no such thing as a soul. There is energy. Or at least that's our label for it. And its manifested in all sorts of ways and in varying degrees of abundance. We have scientific understandings and we have philosophical understandings and spiritual understandings. Not all of these things are in alignment but perhaps one day. Or perhaps not.

To all those who are causing suffering in this world, directly or indirectly: Heed your dreams at night, those nightmares that you most assuredly are having are imploring you to change -before it’s too late…
The quality of our dreams is both a reflection of our thoughts and actions as well as a general foreshadowing of the fate of our souls in the next life...A nightly, temporary karma that beckons us to change - for the good - so as to avoid a more permanent karma❤️‍🔥

      The Figure 8 Analogy:
An analogy on life, death, the dream-state and the symbolism intertwined within the human experience.
We human beings are not traveling in the abstract motion of a straight line towards death (for instance, the numerical straight line of say 1-89). Instead, we are moving in the motion of a figure 8. The Figure 8 is a natural repeating pattern that is divided into two halves and is thus the perfect symbol to represent the human life cycle and our two primary states of existence that we are continuously moving in and out of -the Awake state and the Dream state.
When we awake from sleep we come full circle to when we fall back asleep (represented by the bottom half of the figure 8 )and when we go into the dream state we come full circle to when we awake from the dream state (represented by the top half of the figure 8 ). Upon death; the figure 8 of life untwines, but it’s not the body untwining from the mind that this analogy represents. It's two states of mind untwining to form a larger state of mind (8-0)…
Because the awake state is really a state -of mind with our body's physical reality "consciously" intertwined, and the dream-state is also a state of mind with our body's physical reality "subconsciously" intertwined. Therefore; upon death, these two states of mind untwine to form a “larger” state of mind. A state that has all the potentialities of the dream-world (flying, telepathy, psychokinesis, etc) combined with all the actualities of the awake world(nature, form, bonds, etc). This I refer to as the transitional analogy.
While conceiving The Figure 8 Analogy, I realized life and death must be perceived -from one point of view- as seperate entities(the transitional analogy(8-0), but must also be perceived -from another point of view- as inseparable entities(the symbolic analogy👇), both of which are ultimately linked by the dream-state.
The “Symbolic Analogy” consists of the untwined figure 8 of life/the “circle of death” ( O ) abstractly overlapping the ‘circle of life’ (Earth(🌎)with the overlapping area representing the dreamstate-like the common area in a Venn Diagram-and implies that the dream state is just as much a part of life as is of death (by which explains precognitive dreams, prodromal dreams, "visitations" by deceased relatives, etc) for the dream-state has a foothold in the afterlife; and is based on the premise that “while our body sleeps our dream state symbolically represents the state that awaits upon our body's ultimate rest.”
In other words, while we are lying down and sleeping/dreaming, this natural process symbolizes where we go when we're ultimately lying down/dead -to a place like our dream-state...A state "of mind” with our body's physical form+Earthly bonds eternally engrained and intertwined.

You are right. This talk goes a long way in transform consciousness. Personally I have always been horrified by the story of Jephthah's daughter in Judges 11:30 - 40 and saw the tale as a horrible victim story. Since reflecting on this talk I can now read this again and instead of feeling disgust, I now actually see this story as a teaching fable in which Jephthah's daughter is undertaking her hero's journey.

This series liberated me from the fundamental Christianity that had me chained to a dogma that made no logical sense. Campbell gave me the language to understand what is God? Where do Gods come from and how do I make sense out of the world in respect to this spiritual mystery. This series is every bit a gospel into the true transcendent nature of humanity done with logic and wisdom. I would play 15 seconds of it then ponder - rewind and play the same 15 seconds again and ponder - over and over throughout all 6 hours. I originally paid $250 for the 6 VHS video tapes in 1990 and if I could find another 6 videos that would change my life in such a postitve way, I would gladly pay $10,000 - Campbell is a hero to many of us.

Whether it is putting you in touch with the mystery that's the ground of your own being. If it isn't, well, it's a lie. So half the people in the world are religious people who think that their metaphors are facts. Those are what we call theists. The other half are people who know that the metaphors are not facts. This is very cool. Way back when this first premiered on PBS, my dad and I watched this together. For the next few years, whenever public television would do a marathon, there we were! My dad on the coach, me on the love seat, riveted to the screen. This, David Macaulay's "Castle" and Carl Sagan's "Cosmos", were among our favorite series. We'd actually discuss all the ideas, reflections and mythos. My dad was born in 1927 and grew up in the depression and had an adequate education, for that era, but he loved learning beyond his grade 8 education. He's still alive and he'd love to see this again! I'd also add, that after I saw this series, I bought the "Power of Myth" book and then several books by or on Joseph Campbell. The biography, "A Fire in the Mind" is very excellent and highly recommended. Once you read or listen to this man, your life is forever changed....and if you dig even deeper, you're revealed to an even more interesting story....great stuff!

His understandings and shared wisdom was then and is now, STILL a gift to us all. To give your own life to something higher. To deliver what you love from chaos, dissolution, and death. This is the river of life-wider than an ocean, and as never-ending as a river. To understand with utter clarity, the invisible center behind all beings, behind all things, behind all words as we turn the pages of life. That Angel hovering over the flowers. Over the Earth, over the planets and the universe. To read with comprehension the deepest hearts of life. This is the hero. The one who is my heart, who wields my sword in darkness. Who weaves my body in the dark before I came into being. The hero honors this in the story of their life. These stories are life, cut on the lathe of the spinning of the Earth in the heavens. The coming into being.

Jung's "Psychological Types" offers a clue as to the phenomenal success of this series. Both Campbell and Moyers are "ENFP" types - "idealists" seeking (and creating!) "wisdom". The series, like myths themselves, speaks powerfully to people with a gift for abstract language (iNtuition) paired with a sensitive nature (Feeling). These are the most misunderstood of all the types, and they heard in Campbell's message a "Clarion Call". These interviews (especially the 1st 2) are FILLED with sage "snippets" for the ages. 25 years ago, one rang true for me. I'll go find the time marker and edit it in here ( ), Campbell tells a story of a farmer plowing a field, and his plow gets caught on something. The farmer reaches down and finds a ring. He pulls on the ring and a door opens into an underground cave filled with gold and jewels. Moyers asks, "what does that say to you?". Campbell replies, "where you stumble in life, THAT'S where your treasure lies!" I borrowed this idea in a song lyric about my mid-life crisis where the "muse" (named Keri in the song) "helps me see all the jewels that are the reasons" (the inspiration for the song, and the quest for my True Life Purpose). I don't know if I'm allowed to do this (probably not), but interested Campbell fans can hear the song here, inspired largely by this series

I recommend all spiritual seekers watch this series with an open heart. Ken

A great series, Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myths. Thank you, Bill Moyers made the interview so interesting. I loved Joseph Campbell books. RIP❤
I bought all his book's, and listened to this series on PBS when this came on and got the videos. Thank you, Bill Moyers, for being the interviews with Joseph Campbell. Although, I never watched Star Wars, I am sure it was a movie that many enjoyed. I loved books and literature and poetry and still do.
We are now living in 2023.
Who are the heroes now? I would say it is say it is those who have the intelligence with wisdom who thinks outside the box with the heart connections. It is a journey for all of us inside of yourself. ❤

Its funny, I watched this 20 years ago and did not understand Campbells description of Consciousness then and I`m still not convinced he actually knows about it now. Yes, its best experienced in meditation when the mind suddenly becomes silent and still and one becomes of aware of everything but he doesn`t explain it that way. What I have found so powerful though about mythology is how it explains the human experience, much like the stories in the Old and New Testaments. These are all metaphors for life and should be viewed from that perspective, not literally.
I am returning to this series because of Campbells passion and his deep knowledge of myth. This is content worth viewing throughout ones life.

Just as deception deceives to whom are your prayers addressed. And if the populus believe that planes caused the towers to crumble to the ground within a couple of hours of being hit they/ you are being deceived. And in the same way to believe in the pagan worship of lslam is a travesty, a deception, and an abomination in the eyes of the true God. Islam with its pagan moon god allah and its pedophile prophet. Who lived by the sword and lustfilled heart marrying a six year old girl and lusting for woman all the days of his wretched life. Open your eyes and have a good look. Look at the emblem of lslam highlighting the sickle moon and the sun. Bal hadad bal hadad the symbol of idolatry. The worship of the black stone evidence of your abominations. Take heed that no one deceives you. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:9

My paternal grandpa's - maternal grandmother' maiden name was Campbell. This man looks exactly like he could be my Grandpa's brother. 😳 I can barely watch the screen. I swear to God I'm seeing and hearing my grandpa. Or a freakishly close doppelganger. His ears, the shape of his eyes. His hair color and style. His tone of voice. His accent. His intonation. My grandpa had a crippling stroke when he was in his 40s. He could never exactly talk after that. I could understand him. This Joseph's "lisp" even makes his diction sound like my grandpa.
And barely minutes in, this man seems to speak on EVERYTHING I stand for.. Aliso, I've spent the last 30 years obsessively studying mythologies and legends.

Its not just the physical appearance tho. There is something extremely acute in their mannerisms that is identical. When Joseph gets really passionate about what he's talking about, a smile lights up on his face, but you can really see it in his eyes. Its a very personal splendor.
