Denis, your videos enlighten me as a young player struggling to detach from this mathematical aproach to soloing that makes me struggle to play the changes when in reallity i don't look at music as a whole this way at all, thank you i will keep forever taking advice from you.
Excellent lesson. Back in the '60s, I was playing shows with a pop group but would befriend the pit band- who were jazz musicians. They all said the same thing: "You can't teach Jazz". The only music schools available were exclusively classical. As far as I can tell, jazz education started in 1959 with John Maheegan's 4 books. I only attended music school when I was in my 40s, so learned all about chord scales and modes, but never got to think about them when soloing. I might target chord tones, but generally, my fingers go to what I'm hearing in my head. I believe that that should be taught as the end goal for improvisers. Scales, modes and patterns are all very well in the practice room, but when performing one should go out on a limb and follow your ears.
I know those books! I've been trying to research how modern jazz pedagogy got standardized. I still need to get my hands on a number of books from that era, but I think you are right. I found other books/articles from that era where you could see that things were heading in a certain direction but terminology varied from author to author which indicates the beginning of standardization
Big thanx Denis for your job! It is very valuable! I think Django played wirh ears, mind and soul. He tried to compose his improvisation in every tune.
Exactly! Chord scale theory boxes you in. Think chords, voice leading and passing tones. And Harmonic direction. I call it function, but it's the same thing. or events. Like Fiveness happening. Anything that creates fiveness functions as. Great vid Denis.
Dig the intro. I've been thinking about this subject a lot lately, especially as it relates as what to teach. Just getting into vid now. Who is in the band?
I think in two weeks but I’m not the producer nor am I involved with the marketing and all that, but i’ll try to make an announcement on my social media or a future YT video!
Chords are a bastardized figured bass. They are descriptive and dumbed down for the use of ukelele, banjo, and guitar. The masters of yore were well trained in music. Opera, marching bands, classical music, and vocal quartets were common in urban America. I doubt that the composers of the old standards thought of the music much in chords.

Great stuff. Love Charlie Parker and Lennie Tristano's version of All Of Me.
Very interesting perspective
Kanye West is my favorite Old-School artist, as well....
What about Joe Diorio?
Did Ravi Shankar et al have a big influence on the creation of modal jazz?
Always quality stuff! I love it!

Dixieland fake books are the best! IMHO
