Great video showing how a little tiny insect can ruin your camp ...for anyone coming to camp in Scotland in the summer please take this advice and buy a fine mesh midge net , smidge will help too and even these new thermacell devices are apparently good and only £30 ...treating your gear and tent with permetherin helps with midges and tics...flextail are making a tiny repel device worth trying...good luck 😅
Me dad was from Glasgow and when as kids my Dad and mum took us to Scotland for summer camping holidays Dad always referred to the midges as "wee beasties" tbf the torment that comes with em.. Wee beasties is a pretty accurate description. Still missing Dad😔. He was a great man. Ftt.😠
Reminds me of the first pitstop in scotland on our last day to John O groats. I didnt stop at the pitstop, I just stopped grabbed food and rode off and ate ont he go.
Have you never heard of DEET? In the days of canvas tents we used to wait until they collected along the ridge inside then incinerated them with a candle. Not recommended with modern materials!
This might be THE best wildcamping video I've EVER seen Liam!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Thanks for the upload and sharing the experience. When I was in Canada on the prairies there were swarms of millions of them and it was my envisionment of Hell. Couldn't cope mate and this just made me think of that. Great stuff!!!
Walter Whites pants hahaha, love them - glad you got their safe brother. Love the LOD and Star Wars references too lol. Beautiful scenery and footage!!!! But WOW I COULDN’T DEAL WITH ALL THOSE MIDGES. Another class video!!
I feel your pain! I spent 2 weeks wild camping in the Highlands last month and hiked to the Lost Valley. Midge bites may not last as long as mosquito bites nor itch as much but that prickly sting as they bite is horrible. Not sure I'd go there in winter though as that walk would be treacherous in wet weather. I had enough fun on the way back down because I didn't quite fit through the gap in the rocks and I'm very short and found it difficult to reach footholds on the steep rocky bit near the top. Is a fun little hike though with a rewarding view - but need to go when there's a stiff breeze to keep those midges away.
Chuffed I’ve come across your channel…. Another great video 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻currently recovering from acl, pcl, meniscus surgery. Battling through your channel whilst recovering on the sofa. Great fun pal, peace out 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Been there, done that! Spent a very uncomfortable night there back in the early 70's then 3 nights higher up near the ridge which was midge freeeeeee!!!!! Had to laugh though and started scratching too. Oil of citronella was the only thing that kept them away. You can get it at a chemist shop. Hilleberg tent mesh is way to large for Scottish midges only for the Scandinavian mosquitos which are huge with antlers that get tangled! ha ha
The Port stow near the But of lewis is the worst place iv camped for midgies and flying biting insects basically if it flies it eats you even big black flies and clegs. my old house the windows sometimes got black with the flying vampires and had to sit in sitting room at night without lights on and a small fire in the hearth to stop them coming down the chimney they must have being hungery :)
I advise anyone coming to Scotland between May and September to bring a midge net and plenty of Smidge . And that's not guaranteed to keep them at bay 🙈
Thats what happens in Scottish summer. Noting you can do about it but cover up with nets a midge repellent. If you put your tent up at last light you will get attacked less and find a place with breeze, they dont like wind over 5-7mph.
Gutted for you mate i made the same mistake about 15 years ago never been back between end of April to September it just made the whole experience not as enjoyable as what it should of been. Still enjoyable watching it happen to other poor sod 😂😂 x
I'm laughing my bollocks off at this! Fancy that big man being frightened of a little midge lol. You get used to them and ignore the wee beasties as much as possible. It must have been the Yorkshire? accent that got those SNP midges fired up!
Going by some of the comments you would think that all of Scotland has midges. I live on the east coast now and never get midges. It is mainly the west coast that gets them.
Next time ya go camping in summer ( especially if near any water ) take some citronella intense sticks with you and light them outside the tent ( just stick in ground and leave to burn ) the lil bastards HATE the smell and they piss off :) . I do it in the garden every summer and it keeps us midge free . Great vid tho love 😊😊 Jo.
$10 bug hat with face net ends the problem instantly. I'm way up north of the bay of fundy, we get black flies, horse flies, deer flies, mousse flies, skeeters, midges , the midges are the least of the problem but we know how to deal with it all.
Ive only been bitten by moscuitos and midges and not very often, once you figure out how to defend you will not suffer like that again. We call midges "noseeums."
That is the best camping video I have seen in a long time by far my friend Brilliant I'm going up there next month with my son I definitely know I need to be prepared for the little beasties 😅
Thanks mate! Get a head net and 1 that actually works.. mine, the holes are too big so they get inside which is even worse 🤣 Enjoy mate, where in Scotland are you heading ?
I'm going to the hidden valley and old Ben plus a few places near Stirling well worth the trip form Leeds plus I have a few friends and old work mates I know up there so they show me all the things the average tourist miss's I did the outer Hebrides last summer with them Can't come fast enough Keep making those cracking videos well entertaining 🙏
The lost valley..... found by every midge on the planet apparently 😂 good on you mate, you stuck it out 💪 looking forward to seeing the next one👍 take care bud, God bless you Liam 😊🙏🙏
Every Scottish person watching this went through every second of that tent setting up. And we all nodded in agreement when you sparked up the stove indoors 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Feel your pain , horrible wee bastards! Had to abandon a campsite up Glen Etive last month and sleep in my car as they were insane - coming from a Scot who’s used to them aswell 😂
Did you wonder when you got there why there was no-one else camping? Bet it didn't take you long to realize :) It reminded me of all the times I've put up a tent at a gallop so i could get inside and away from them while praying for a breeze.
Least tha knows wots next on to buy list pal...midge head net, smidge, avon so soft lol, lost valley is bad because its sheltered a fair bit so no breeze lol I always camp or park somewhere with a breeze of poss if im gonna go during season
Great video, I fully identify with your reaction to the midge swarms, it feels like they are smothering you and you have to fight back a state of panic. I've blown my nose after and the tissue was black with dead midges. I'd be interested to know how they handled that though history. You need a midge net.
Ahhh I’ve planned a night there in a couple of weeks as I travel around, I have the head nets and bug spray 🤞🤞how long did the hike take from the carpark
Munros, Liam! They’re Munros in Scotland. Scotland certainly looked absolutely stunning 😍 🏴 God, I do love that country 😍 Superb video as always Liam, if a little #midgetastic 😂 You did make me laugh with your cacky trousers 🤣 Brilliant content. Can’t wait for next week’s instalment mate 👍
Not the first and you won’t be the last to experience the Scottish midgie. Nightmare. Sarah from Fit for Adventure has a few videos of the wee blighters eating her alive.
@GoodBlokeOutdoors I will literally watch the lot, ive broke my ankle so currently got lot of time on my hands 😅 usually go to oldest and watch, do love the bad weather ones, I had an ultra next week I've had to cancel, it was 45k to a bivi area with dog, set up then 25k back in morning , bought the stove the tent everything, so it'll sit there till I get oit again. Probably go to the centre of Britain point as I'm moving more north this week from mcr
I’ve only just noticed this since recording the video! Thats why I needed a belt, I told them i was a size 32 🤣 which according to the website has a 35 waist, no wonder I needed a belt 😅😅 Didn’t realise during the recording or the edit. Might update it and mention it in the description!
Ahhh the Scottish midgies. That’s why I don’t do Scotland until September. Certain bits of the Peak can be just as bad. Black Cloughs just off the Woodhead being a prime example
16:19 had to cut some audio out for youtube monetisation reasons so ignore the 6 seconds of silence 🫣🫣🫣

Never laughed so much in ages. Fair play for sticking it out.
Really enjoy your videos and your humour 👍
Thank you for the support, glad you enjoyed the vid 👌🏼
Your tent set-up sequence is the best backpacking video ever shot. Had me absolutely rolling.
Avons skin so soft is good for chacing the midgies and they don't like wind,so a small fan helps
Beautiful place! On my last camp I didn’t have ideal weather, but I’d take that over dealing with midges any day. Brutal little blood suckers!
Yeah i’d much prefer to be back up there in the colder months when there is no midges!
Reminds me of the first pitstop in scotland on our last day to John O groats. I didnt stop at the pitstop, I just stopped grabbed food and rode off and ate ont he go.
Have you never heard of DEET?

I really couldn't help it but watching you going nuts with those bugs, oh man what a laugh ! 😂

🤣🤣🤣 Thanks mate, I was asking for it! Middle of summer, in a valley! In Scotland! Thanks for watching mate
kielder area too northumberland , we took some veggie food for a picnic up hareshaw linn once and we were eating the things lol
you should of tried some citronella and smidge or a mini fan....i am thinking of going to the campsite in glencoe not sure know lol
Walter Whites pants hahaha, love them - glad you got their safe brother.

I camped there in May. Won’t go back up to Scotland until September at earliest now, midges just ruin it otherwise.
I took the kids camping at Glencoe a few years ago the midges were so bad . We drove 3 hours , spent the night then drove home
Been there, done that! Spent a very uncomfortable night there back in the early 70's then 3 nights higher up near the ridge which was midge freeeeeee!!!!!

About bloody time mate, didn't think you got there with your car, going to be on my bucket list for winter. X
Aye the wee lions, handy having a pack of nagchampa essence sticks and Avon skin so soft.👍
You must have bought a landing net for fishing mate.👍🚙⛺️
Always take a headnet, smidge from April to oct
The Port stow near the But of lewis is the worst place iv camped for midgies and flying biting insects basically if it flies it eats you even big black flies and clegs.

Wainwright went on a walking holiday to Scotland every summer. No joke! (He did a book on Scotland in the 80s I believe).
👍
Never knew that mate, thanks for watching 👍🏼
I advise anyone coming to Scotland between May and September to bring a midge net and plenty of Smidge . And that's not guaranteed to keep them at bay 🙈
I'm itching just watching this video! Lawd! 😣
Here's an idea for you, head to your local 'curtain shop' and purchase a length of tight weave net curtain material. Boom! a cheap mosquito head net.
I live in the Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania USA. I Hate Summer AS well!!!! Miserable season!!!!
I've never felt itchier watching a video 😅 Might have to leave the lost valley on the bucket list for a few months yet...
Deffo a spring or autumn trip yeah ⛺️
Now you know why we wear midge nets and sit inside our tents😅
You can run but they will still get you. Best is a windy spot.
A head net is a must. 👍
Agreed mate, thanks for watching
Thats what happens in Scottish summer. Noting you can do about it but cover up with nets a midge repellent. If you put your tent up at last light you will get attacked less and find a place with breeze, they dont like wind over 5-7mph.

That was hilarious, crying with laughter. Brilliant !
Another absolutely cracking video Liam. Loved it! Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it. thanks mate!

What brand hiking sticks do you use? That you hold up tent with etc

🤣🤣🤣
The most beautiful locations are often the most inhospitable, 10/10 for perseverance 👍
Thank you 👍🏼
Hello from Canada, wife and l have a planned wild camping trip coming up in September. Really rethinking our choice after this
You should be ok by September, certainly not at this level !
Never go to the west coast after May and before September. Done the lost valley twice now, awesome place 😊
Yeah i’ll certainly bare that in mind now and go again back end of the year 👌🏼
Going by some of the comments you would think that all of Scotland has midges. I live on the east coast now and never get midges. It is mainly the west coast that gets them.
Now this has been the funniest video that I’ve watched in a long while. Apologies but your discomfort made I chuckle.
Thank you so much for your review, I hope you like our pants.
I do, great quality!
Amazon's 3f ul gear's lanshan tent is too expensive.....was charged a lot of extra
Midgey headnet and a flextail. Sorted 🤣
Hi Liam, what are those fancy pegs that you use mate? Can't see them on your gear list.
Hi mate search 9” pegs on Ali express. More or less same as the easton pegs but for a lot cheaper price.
@@GoodBlokeOutdoors Cheers pal
Welcome to scotland thanks for feeding the wildlife. Saves them eating us
You’re welcome thanks for having me and watching the video
😂😂😂
Beautiful location but omg those midges, I could never, bet you took hundreds home with you in the tent 🤣
Tell me about it! No escaping them 🤣
Great video, unlucky with the midges been attacked by them a few times
Aye I didn’t stand a chance going with no wind and in June!
Next time ya go camping in summer ( especially if near any water ) take some citronella intense sticks with you and light them outside the tent ( just stick in ground and leave to burn ) the lil bastards HATE the smell and they piss off :) . This reminded me of when I went camping with the lads at Lock Doon in Scotland, never again. 😂
Yeah i think i’ll avoid Scotland in the summer months!
Agree pal, fuck the summer. I'm looking forward to September
The lost valley..... found by every midge on the planet apparently 😂 good on you mate, you stuck it out 💪 looking forward to seeing the next one👍 take care bud, God bless you Liam 😊🙏🙏

Stay safe and well mate,
Adge

Every Scottish person watching this went through every second of that tent setting up. And we all nodded in agreement when you sparked up the stove indoors 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video spidey. 😂 It was a laugh watching it, Liam 🤘
What is it with Scotland and midges? I remember a summer holiday up there as a kid and we were plagued by midges the whole time.
Feel your pain , horrible wee bastards! Had to abandon a campsite up Glen Etive last month and sleep in my car as they were insane - coming from a Scot who’s used to them aswell 😂

5:35 that's hilarious but I feel your pain

Two words, "mossie net"....
I can laugh now its over 🤣 3:52 i’m wearing a head net and i was covered in repellent 😅 the midges fit through the net it was useless 😭
Did you wonder when you got there why there was no-one else camping? Bet it didn't take you long to realize :) It reminded me of all the times I've put up a tent at a gallop so i could get inside and away from them while praying for a breeze.
They follow you into the tent - if you taste good.
are they sore then, when they bite? i dont remember years since i went to scotland
No, just can’t stop itching 😫
that was funny 😂 thanks for posting
June - Scotland - Valley - No Wind
Never been to Scotland in summer before then 😂
First time ever going to Scotland 👍🏼
Thanks for doing that…… so we don’t have to. 😂
Did you not get midged alive the night before on the ‘beach’ at Loch Lomond?
Love the channel. 👍
I never thought id find someone else's pain and suffering so entertaining... 😂 Aweome stuff mate, brilliant Vid 👍
🤣🤣 Thanks mate

You need one of those bug zappers that looks like a tennis racket 🤣
Hahaha i’ve got 1 of these at home for the flies in summer
Great video, I fully identify with your reaction to the midge swarms, it feels like they are smothering you and you have to fight back a state of panic. I've blown my nose after and the tissue was black with dead midges. I'd be interested to know how they handled that though history. You need a midge net.
More populated/drained land is one reason. Would still have been hellish.
Get yourself a couple tins of "Smidge" as soon as possible mate.
Loving the humour edits Liam 👏🏻🎬😂
Thanks mate
Those little buggers put me in hospital when I did the WHW over 20 years ago 😭
Great vid,It's a cracking spot, whereabouts are you from btw ? You sound roundabouts from my hometown , Bradford.
Thank you and Yes mate Bradford 👍🏼
Had to laugh mate about the midges welcome to Scotland lad. I'm in the Highlands the midges here have tattoos mate 😂
🤣🤣 thanks for watching John! I’ll be back for sure
The midge why I don't go anywhere near the Scottish Highlands in Summer.
Ahhh I’ve planned a night there in a couple of weeks as I travel around, I have the head nets and bug spray 🤞🤞how long did the hike take from the carpark
Not long probably an hour or so, maybe less but obv I was stopping to film a few bits here and there, messing with the drone etc.
@@GoodBlokeOutdoors Thanks for the reply, I’m heading up with my daughter and dog. We won’t be in any rush.
Smidge head net, thin gloves, only thing that works is a physical barrier.
Like a scene from I am legend with you under siege from monsters!
Summer in theUK. No thought about midges?
Omaybe always carrry a midge net?
3:52 i’m wearing a midge net and i was covered in repellent 😅 the midges fit through the net it was useless 😭
Great vid mate I was pissing myself laughing cracking place and views I could never camp Scotland in summer hate the bloody things 😂
Deffo gonna return in Winter!
Deet and a headnet lol I’ve been bitten to death before . Pissed myself laughing. I know how it feels when pitching in midges 😂
Munros, Liam! They’re Munros in Scotland. Scotland certainly looked absolutely stunning 😍 🏴 God, I do love that country 😍
Superb video as always Liam, if a little #midgetastic 😂 You did make me laugh with your cacky trousers 🤣
Brilliant content. Can’t wait for next week’s instalment mate 👍
Thats it, that word had totally gone out of my mind at the time of recording 😅 and I didn’t realise he was a fella.
Thanks for watching 😊👍🏼
Midges vicious wee beasties
Certainly are!
I was sat here itching my head and neck watching this 🤣...buy a life systems head net, they work great 👍🏻😂
I will mate, this cheap 1 i bought is no good they just get through the holes 😅🤣
Whats the music?? 🎉
April is the last month il go camping inland up here
Same from now on mate!

Aah man, I’m still itching!
Those trousers look cool, but the sizing is a bit weird, the size size, doesn’t match the actual waist size 🤔🤷🏻♂️
I’ve only just noticed this since recording the video! Thats why I needed a belt, I told them i was a size 32 🤣 which according to the website has a 35 waist, no wonder I needed a belt 😅😅
Didn’t realise during the recording or the edit.
Might update it and mention it in the description!
Youre head is like LAX airport for the mosquitos etc. Just cover up the moon
really enjoyed this one, och ma ribs :) Southeners ROFL.
