Your reaction made me cry as much as the song does. Ren was called by a friend in the middle of the night that Joe had called her to say he was on the bridge. Ren lived closest and ran to the bridge but he was minutes too late. Another friend, Callum Mackay, died 6 months later in a tragic accident, Ren composed a piano piece tribute to him too. Imagine being so ill and carrying all that sadness too, my stomach turns at the thought. 😢
Wow, thank you so much for this background information. I can’t imagine the pain he must still feel from that. This is Such a beautiful way to pay tribute to Joe however.
It gets worse - Ren lost another friend right after Joe - all still in their early 2Os. The track McKay is avtribute to this otger friend, Callum. Double Dutch in the UK means gibberish, not a skipping game as in the US. Fibonacci sequences are mathematical patterns, orderly. So he sees the world as disorderly and orderly.
That’s so interesting, because as an American who thought he meant our version of double Dutch, I took it to mean complex rhythm. Double Dutch is a real art form in that way.
Loving all the reactions. The more you learn about Rens backstory the more you’ll love and marvel at his music. Just randomly pick anything to react to and it’s all great
Damn I am loving your reactions. You are so respectful to the artist, and you take your time to understand what the artist is saying. So glad I subbed.
Ren and Joe lived on Anglesey,an island connected to the mainland by the menai bridge, he ran to the bridge but Joe was gone. He also has another song freckled angels. Joe was covered in freckles, apparently, and there's a cafe near the spot named after the song. I think freckled angels is a better song. I don't think I've seen another reactor do this one. So what next? Genesis? Murderer? I don't think you've done kujo beat down But,BUT before you watch it ,watch rens video where he explains what happened. Loving your learning curve 1k🇬🇧💙
Ren and Joe, we're childhood m8 they met through their parents in the late 90s as their parents were into going to music festivals, and they took the kids with them. They both grew up in Anglesea Wales. Anglesea is on an island at the northwestern tip of Wales. It's connected to the mainland via a very high bridge over a very deep fast tide rip stretch of the Irish sea. Joe had been struggling with mental problems and had been up on that bridge many times before, but he always got back down from the railings and went home. On the fateful night, he'd phoned a m8 to say he was up on that bridge again, and that m8 immediately phoned Ren, and Ren dropped everything and legged it towards the bridge . It was a very stormy night, and blowing a hooligan up on the bridge , Ren was trying Joe phone while he was running towards the bridge, and after several tries with a ring tone it went off. When Ren got to the bridge, there was no sign of Joe. Joes m8s concluded that Joe must have been blown off balance and lost his grip and fell into that deep rip current of water. The local lifeboat ( The RNLI, Royal National Lifeboat institution ) crew searched for Joe for 4 days solid but never found him. Some years later, Ren returned to Anglesea with a cheque for 10k pounds for the RNLI their a charity organisation. And he visited Joes mum and gave her the money for her to buy the motorhome she'd always wanted. That's the kind of bloke our Sick boi is. He possesses a very big heart.!!! It's hard to watch that one. You did well. That was a great reaction . 🇬🇧🏴🇬🇧👍🤙😁❤️🇺🇲
‘Mackay’ is another video Ren made that’s dedicated to yet another friend he lost. 😢 The crazy thing is -it’s instrumental, but he still manages to tell a story with the music! Incredibly moving and powerful.
There are 4 songs that make up a “series” about his childhood best friend Joe Hughes. “For Joe” was the last one and personally I think that it helped Ren find some psychological closure. RENs first album FRECKLED ANGELS is dedicated to him, as is the Title track “ Freckled Angels” This is what REN wrote in the pinned comments section for this song: I met Joe when I was 8 years old, my friend Josh said I had to meet this guy, so we both walked over to his, it took about 10 minutes from my house. I was greeted by this kid covered head to toe in freckles, he grinned at us, climbed onto the back of his sofa and screamed “Swanton Bomb!” then front flipped off the top and landed right onto his back on a stone floor. He lay still for a moment, twitched a few times, then got up, grinned at us, brushed himself off, and did it again. This was Joe. He’d do anything to make people laugh. He ended up becoming one of my best friends. He was there when we stole our first cigarettes out of his mum’s pack, way too young. He was there when I had my first kiss, with a girl twice my size on the back of the 42 bus. He was there when I first got so drunk I threw up in the woods after drinking as much White Lightning Cider as we could. I was there when he did his first backflip on skates, and saw him do a 720 off of the pier cave, that moment became legendary. Joe was the funny one in our friend group, he’d make us laugh till it hurt. No one had a bad word to say about him. It was impossible not to like him. Usually we put celebrities, athletes and actors on pedestals, turn them into role models and admire them from a far. The person I admired was Joe. He knew every word to the songs I’d write, we’d get drunk at parties and they’d be singing along as loud as they could. It gave me a lot of confidence back then. On Christmas Eve 2010 I was sitting in a pub with Joe, he’d been feeling low after a couple of consecutive break ups. He tried to check himself into a mental health outpatient facility a few weeks earlier but they turned him away because he didn’t have an appointment. He turned to me and said that sometimes he wished he could just walk into the sea and keep walking. He said it in a kind of half joking throw away comment type of way, then took a sip of his drink, walked over to the juke box and put Dig by Incubus on. If I knew that was the last time I’d see Joe I’d have hugged him, told him how much I loved him, how much I looked up to him, how much we all loved him, and I wouldn’t have left that pub. I didn’t know that, so I finished my drink, said Happy Christmas and left. Two nights after Christmas I got woken up by a phone call at 3am, it was my friend Ella. She told me Joe was on the Menai Bridge, a large suspension bridge connecting the main land to the Isle of Anglesey where we lived. He’d been on the phone to her in tears saying goodbye. He told her to tell everyone he loved them. I pulled on my clothes as fast as I could and started running toward the bridge. It was up a hill. I lived about a ten minute walk away, I could run it in five. As I ran I started dialling then redialing his number. The line was busy, which was a good sign, it meant he was still on the phone to someone. As I got about halfway, the busy tone changed. It told me the line was out of service. I got a sinking feeling and picked up my speed. I arrived to the bridge minutes after I left my house. It was deafeningly quiet. I was the first person to arrive. I got there probably about 2 minutes too late. Joe’s body was never found. Initially we refused to believe he was gone. The coastguard came out that night, with boats, and helicopters. Me and my friends spent the next 10 days putting up missing posters everywhere we could, walking up and down beaches with flashlights, getting about 3 hours sleep a night. When you’re walking up and down a beach with a torch when its dark everything looks like a body. We still haven’t found Joe. As his birthday came around, I wrote a song, Freckled Angels, a song I dedicated to Joe which I sang in front of his friends and family. A charity football match was put on for him, raising money for the RNLI where I won two bottles of wine in a raffle, I drank them both as quickly as I could, naturally, turned to my friend and probably slurred something along the lines of “This is the last time I ever drink” That was 12 years ago, I haven’t touched a drop of alcohol since. My first ever album I named Freckled Angels in tribute of one of the best people I ever knew. Skip forward some years. I’d been sitting on this song I wrote a few years ago. It always felt a little incomplete. It was going to be my next release, but I was dreading it because of this feeling of incompletion. I decided, very last minute, to do something about it. I sat by my piano, and the rest of the song fell out of me. I hadn’t thought about Joe in a little while, and the song initially wasn’t going to be about him, but the words all fell out of me. I wrote and recorded a whole 2 minutes extra, recording each part as I wrote it. Tears spewing out of my eyes pretty much the whole time, and decided not to do my usual thing of perfecting each line, I just recorded every line as it came. That song is Ren’s latest single Suic*de. During the campaign for the single he raised money for the RNLI, and also donated 50% of the profit on all copies of the ‘Freckled Angels’ album directly to Joe’s family. We managed to raise an incredible £21,000 for the RNLI, an incredible team of volunteers, who risk their lives without pay to aid calls of distress from British shores. The night Joe went missing they were out on the choppy stretch of water between Anglesey and the Mainland, until 5am, looking for Joe, without pay, from the goodness of their hearts. They continued the search efforts for the entire following week until hope dwindled. They owed us nothing, and gave us everything. I decided to pay a visit to Joe’s mum and dad. I was asked to play them the new live session I recorded in Calgary. It was probably the most nervous I’ve been playing someone a video that I’d made. The topic isn’t an easy one, especially for parents who have lost an incredible son. I nervously hit play, and the gravity of what I was showing sunk in and I began to cry. In the end we sat in silence, silently sobbing. Joe’s mum turned to me and smiled and we hugged, and I felt much lighter. It made me really realise I guess what I’ve always known. Music is far more than music. It’s a channel of communication for the things that are impossible to say. It’s a bridge between the living and the dead. It’s a way to stay immortal. It’s a way to resurrect the dead. It’s a universal language. It cuts down barriers of the parts of you which are encapsulated in steel cast iron. It allows frozen rivers to thaw and become un-stagnant. I owe myself, my life, everything I am to music. Music is the closest thing to god I know. I am so grateful to be doing what I do and to tap into this mystic force. My life, my energy, myself, I eternally devote to it. Since you began here I suggest going backwards because you will see and hear how each song ties in together. So…. Su!cide (the end is where “ For Joe” begins) ** HOW TO BE ME with Chinchilla LIVE* [ REN did this alone, sitting on his bed. He broke down before the end verse and stopped but came back to finish. He also wrote as a caption that he considered not posting it because he was crying during it, but not only did he finish it UNEDITED he also wrote WHY he posted it unedited: Because the rate of S among males is 4X higher than that of females BECAUSE OF THE STIGMA ASSOCIATED WITH NOT ONLY EXPRESSING ONES FEELINGS BUT IN ALLOWING YOURSELF TO BE VULNERABLE ENOUGH TO SHOW THEM. BECAUSE IT TAKES STRENGTH AND COURAGE AND HE WANTED TO SHOW THAT. And of course he followed with the hotlines that offer help for those struggling Freckled Angels ( there’s a live version of a very young Ren performing in on stage
Fibonacci sequence is patterns in mathmatics. You look great in a turtleneck, but your emotional IQ shines through with or without the turtleneck ❤ How to Be Me with Chinchilla touches on how we lose ourselves when a loved one dies. Would love to see your reaction to Ren in that piece of art 😊
Welcome to the Ren Rabbit Hole. I’ve been in it for a year and a half and I still find new content. I’ve recently learned his genre is knows as Bardcore, but as you’ve seen he has a million styles, even within a single performance! A few of my lesser-known faves: Humble, ft Eden Nash Voodoo Child, a warm-up he did for a Big Push busking sesh. It is only a partial clip but amazing. Live version of “Dominos”, also only a partial clip.
Please check out 'freckled Angela's the album version. There's no video but you have to close your eyes and listen trying not to pause too much. He wrote the song freckled angels a few months after Joe died. A beautiful song ❤❤❤
I really do enjoy your Ren reactions, as a young man you give me hope that other young men have a chance to be in a better place when it comes to their emotional and mental health... its so good to see more positive role models, we are in need of them, THANK YOU
Tear ducts...lol. Fibonacci sequences and double dutch (in the UK double dutch means gibberish) so it means order and chaos. Freckled Angels was Ren's first album, Joe was covered in freckles. Ren shared his loss, but he also shared Joe with the world. RIP - he is now known (and in a way remembered) by millions.
Ren exists on a different level compared to other artists. It’s actually not fair to compare other artists to Ren. It’s taking a while for people to find Ren, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s actually going to be hard to share him with the masses. I’m hoping the “Swifties” and such won’t quite “get him”. Ren deserves a following that operates on a different level. I think his raunchy sense of humor will just get him in trouble with people of lesser intelligence. This sounds snobby, and it’s not meant to. I just think that differences in culture and intellect can create trouble sometimes. Loving your reactions. Thanks😉💙✌️
I really enjoy your reactions and say the same as everyone else , you really pay attention and understand what the songs are saying .. keep that joy you radiate 💚
Joe Hughes is his name Ren is singing about, he ended up committing suicide and ren was only about two minutes away from the bridge joe jumped from as well as another of ren friend. They kept searching for joe but they never did, unfortunately Callum he mentioned in the song as well committed suicide. Years afterwards ren met a woman and it was joe Hughes cousin actually. Ren is a welsh artist that suffers from autoimmune disease and Lyme disease. Every song he does youll see he pours his heart into. His story is called chapters 1-9 i believe by Ren. It'll help understand Ren. The song and album freckled angela is dedicated to joe as well i believe every time this song is played it goes towards the Joe Hughes foundation. Ren doesn't make money off this, it all goes to Joe's family. Joe Hughes and Ren gills grew up together since Ren was 9 years old, he's now 31 i believe and this song took a long time for him to make, he is crying as well as in the end of the suicide song by him. He's in a lot of ways like the rapper NF with lyrics and pouring their heart out. The difference between them is one curses the other doesn't but I do believe if ren and NF duo together it would be 🔥 freckled Angels not Angela my bad
Joe was Rens best friend Joe took care of his parents so when Joe died Ren gave them money to help them as well. I was crying you can hear and feel the pain Ren has for Joe. 1K I love the man you are as boyfriend husband and father you would be exceptional. lol

Thank YOU brother 🙏🏾🔥. Go YANKEES💪🏽
Really enjoying your Ren reactions. Thanks!
I'm not crying, you're cr... OK, I'm crying. 💜
Such a beautiful song😭🫶🏾
Double Dutch in the UK means gibberish, not a skipping game as in the US. Fibonacci sequences are mathematical patterns, orderly. So he sees the world as disorderly and orderly.
That’s so interesting, because as an American who thought he meant our version of double Dutch, I took it to mean complex rhythm. Double Dutch is a real art form in that way.
Thank you for your beautiful heart- felt reaction!!!🫶🫶🥰🥰🫂🫂☮️☮️
Loving all the reactions. The more you learn about Rens backstory the more you’ll love and marvel at his music. Just randomly pick anything to react to and it’s all great
Damn I am loving your reactions. You are so respectful to the artist, and you take your time to understand what the artist is saying. So glad I subbed.
Thank you so much for the positive feedback !!! I truly appreciate your support 🙏🏾🫶🏾
Thank you for this one. It's amazing too see your raw emotions and I appreciate you g💜🔥much love g
Love watching with you. Ren reminds us to feel deeply.
Much love ❤️ Sue
‘Mackay’ is another video Ren made that’s dedicated to yet another friend he lost. 😢 The crazy thing is -it’s instrumental, but he still manages to tell a story with the music! Incredibly moving and powerful.
Ren reminds us to feel what we're feeling and don't shy away from it. He's out there being real as hell.
Loved this! You have become a part of my morning routine. Keep them coming!! ❤
❤❤❤❤❤
There are 4 songs that make up a “series” about his childhood best friend Joe Hughes. “For Joe” was the last one and personally I think that it helped Ren find some psychological closure. RENs first album FRECKLED ANGELS is dedicated to him, as is the Title track “ Freckled Angels”
This is what REN wrote in the pinned comments section for this song:
I met Joe when I was 8 years old, my friend Josh said I had to meet this guy, so we both walked over to his, it took about 10 minutes from my house.
So….
Su!cide (the end is where “ For Joe” begins)
** HOW TO BE ME with Chinchilla LIVE* [ REN did this alone, sitting on his bed. And of course he followed with the hotlines that offer help for those struggling
Freckled Angels ( there’s a live version of a very young Ren performing in on stage
A few of my lesser-known faves:
Humble, ft Eden Nash
Voodoo Child, a warm-up he did for a Big Push busking sesh.
There is a live version on video..
I really do enjoy your Ren reactions, as a young man you give me hope that other young men have a chance to be in a better place when it comes to their emotional and mental health... its so good to see more positive role models, we are in need of them, THANK YOU
💟💟💟💟🖤🖤🖤🖤 thank you for the lovely reaction
I actually stayed up all night watching your Ren reactions. They were awesome!Loved it!!!!!
Bro your reaction did this song justice. ❤ you just earned another renegade sub
He this song is beautiful & heartbreaking. Ren pours his soul out over those keyboards! Yet another great Ren reaction @1KZAY
Maybe check out Ren and Orlean - Jessica. Also looking forward to you getting Chinchilla on the channel. Much love and respect from The UK.
Four Words, my fellow RENegade..
'How To Be Me'. 😊
I really enjoy your reactions. You are obviously a smart and caring person and you can be proud of yourself for being someone who truly listens.
I am so impressed by your reactions. You have such insight and empathy for a person your age. Keep doing what you're doing. 💜
Wow! That was beautiful! I’m speechless… ty for sharing this beautiful reaction & oh my do I appreciate u💐🥹
The turtleneck comment had me 😂&❤!! 😊
he just keeps getting better and better
❤
Give “Losing it” by Ren a spin. Another flavour!
Joe was Rens best friend Joe took care of his parents so when Joe died Ren gave them money to help them as well. I was crying you can hear and feel the pain Ren has for Joe. 1K I love the man you are as boyfriend husband and father you would be exceptional. lol
