basically because horse is bad, and if he ever picks one up it's with the mindset of "don't fall into the trap of building around this, just use it while you have to and sell it later" -- picking up a sheep in the meantime might make for an early win or two, but it's just more grist for the sunken costs mill later on.

No, that's normal. Combine lvl 1s gives +1 to the highest attack and hp while keeping any temporary buffs from horses/cupcakes etc
