Who knows if anyone reads this, but for those who do I don't expect you to care or understand. I'm a 17 year old young man who loves Phil Collins, This song was played at my Dads funeral, he was tragically killed in a traffic collision on his way home from work in summer 2011. After his funeral my mum told me that he always wanted to tell me the lyrics to this song... he never got around to it. Now whenever I hear this song I instantly think of him and his smile. Always brings me to tears :'(.
Just lost my son 7 weeks ago, age 33. I sent him this song about 5 years ago because it's true, and Phil Collins is my favorite artist and he knew that. I can't explain how difficult it is to function properly right now. He was my only son, my best friend, and my business partner. DAMN IT HURTS
Prayers could not imagine my son is my world be strong my pap always told me ones behind living not the dead they are in a better place I like to believe that
I've seen his concert just before COVID in 2020. His son, now a great drummer, was amazing. Phil was seated in the concert, but has not lost any of his voice, and was amazing. God bless him for giving me the most amazing time in my crazy life.
I never had a Dad growing up, but today I have a son. Everyday I am giving him what I never had. The love I have for that little boy could burst my heart wide open.
Extremely underrated, and filled with emotion. The instrumental, lyrics, and passion that was dedicated to this track, never gets it's full credits. One of my favorite all-time Collins songs, and one that brings many memories. Truly one of a kind. Sad that legends like these only come once in a lifetime. Long Live Phil.
My beloved dad passed away on Monday. He truly was a wonderful man and a great dad. He was a teacher who transformed many lives. And he left a legacy at one school.Incredible really.Love and miss you terribly dad. ❤️❤️❤️
i remember when i was little, my dad had the "But Seriously" tape and we would always listen to it in his truck whenever we would go places. i can still remember every single song on this tape, it always makes me so sad. any song by phil collins reminds me of him but this tape especially ♥ love you daddy and i miss you every day, rest in paradise.
Amen! I sent this song to my Son one day...he responded oneday unexpectedly and said, "Wow Pop" "That's a deep song", "Love Ya, Pop!". I will remember that every time I hear this song.
Here I Am...at age 22, and when i listens to this song...it always reminds me of my father... He was one of a kind, even though he was a military man he never forgot about his son and would always make time for me when ever he gets a chance...he would even fly me out to where he was stationed just to spend time with me or suprise me...and man was he good at that!...but wen he passed on in 2017 i was under my first year of college and i just had a bad break up which was hard for me...but my mom told me that he is always with u, and when i listen to this...it always reminds me of him and it speaks to me like he is still around to show me the was in the sea of life...Thank you Phil Collins for making a magnificent song about fathers, And thank u too dad for being in my life...R.I.P. dad! Ur son loves ya!
Just when you think the song could not get any better, Phil puts the keyboard run in. Nothing is left out! and the repeat to fade (forever) - absolutely incredible!
I am 14 right now, about to be 15. When I first listened to this song, I didn't really pay attention to the lyrics so I really didn't feel much. The second time I listened to this, I read the lyrics, and I cried. The outro especially got me. Made me think of my dad, and my Grandpa who passed away from Covid in late 2020. I can't help but tear up at the line "I'll always be with you, don't forget. Just look over your shoulder, I'll be there."
I've never saw my dad as he passed away when I was just one. The fact of growing without a father it completely affects your life alongside your close relationship. Whenever I listen to this song I just become abruptly down and in tears.
My dad was a Phil Collins fan. I bought him Both Sides for Christmas in 1993. We listened to But Seriously in France on holidays. Happy memories. Dad died last month from a brain tumour. My mind can’t accept that he is gone, that I won’t see him again or hear his voice. It was OK in the first couple of weeks after he died as he was out of suffering, now I randomly start crying in the street. I have been listening to this song a lot. It makes me sad, but it makes me feel close to him as well. I’m quoting some of the lyrics in my eulogy at his funeral next week, The end of the song make me imagine dad packing his bag, heading out of the door and walking towards the light. Free from pain, but much missed. Goodbye dad.
I miss my dad, who passed away in 2013. And now as a father of two young sons (5yo and 3mo), this song tugs at the emotions. I love seeing them grow. Yet time is bittersweet as moments so quickly pass.
Lost my dad 8 years ago this past March, this song really makes me think of him, both my parents loved Phil's songs so much, they're both gone now, only memories left ♡♡
As a father I get teared up listening to this song. I think about my boys and I always try to remind them I am here for them. Even when I’m gone just look over your shoulder I’ll be there.

Today marks 8 months since my 33 year old brother tragically passed away. He was a huge fan of Phil Collins and he loved this song..even though he didn't have a relationship with my dad..he yearned for a loving father and son relationship. This is hard to listen to now a days..
I lost my dad years ago but every day I think of him. I believe he is watching over me. I think I will have this song played at my funeral, I love my daughter to bits!
My son is being bullied at school and doesn't deserve it. He is a sweet boy who has a genuine heart. I have played this song for him in the past but now it seems more meaningful as I search for the right words and actions to guide him. Thank you Phil for the inspiration.
I have realize my childhood hero... He has given me a lot to recognize my expectations and my non expectations.. No accomplishment could be done without self satisfaction..
I lost my Dad 15 years ago, songs like this bring back so so many happy memories. The problem is we all expect our parents always to be there and to be honest we never really grow up to be without them.
I can't cry, but listenin to this brings shivers through my body. My father is 68 and has been terminally ill for 9 years. It's been very hard to see him slowly withering away from us.
I dearly miss my dad he has been gone for 25 years & my brother 20. full grown woman but if ONLY I could get back 1 month with them. You truly need to open your heart & feel what Phil Collins sings. Many songs make me cry another is Sir Elton John THE LAST SONG.
My Beloved Husband considered this song, his legacy to his son. We played it for him, and gave him Phil's loving lyrics. My husband lost his battle with cancer, July,2009, but those sentiments will live forever!! Thanks, Phil
Listen to this often, as I was always working instead of being where I should have been. It hurts when I think of all the years that I wasted instead of being with my son. Makes me very proud when I see him with his daughter. And it's like I've been given a second chance.
Almost finished with my first semester of college, this song always reminds me of my dad and the lessons he has given me and the great memories we have! An inspiration to me always
Phil Collins is one of the most influential musicians I've ever had the pleasure to allowing in my heart. Great music is universal and Phil has touched our souls with his honest and genuine approach! Love the feeling you give me everytime I hear your music! I wouldn't be the man I am today without Phil's music in my life.
This past week marked 19 Years since loss of my beloved dad…💔😥💔 I still weep for him along with recently my adopted mom. Grief feels so incredibly lonesome.😪😥😪 #MissYouSoMuchDad #Parentless
Lost my dad when I was 9 in 2002. More than 15 years since his passing,I still miss him like he just passed on today. I hope I can be as good a dad as he was to my own son(kid(s)) someday. Thanks for this good song Phil.A S. Cameroonian enjoying from South Africa.
Guys, have kicked through the 60 door and have been listening to PC since my late 20's!!!............. he is the best.........great lyrics wonderful sounds, super voice the list is long and distinguished.............keep going Phil, truly one of the icons of the music industry.............we salute you mate!
'But know there's nothing wrong, you're learning to be strong, don't look back' a staggeringly beautiful line, to me that's true parent to child love, being there to hold them whenever the fear and the hurt gets too much, but also teaching them to not be afraid, to be tough and resilient, to no longer need you...because one day, you'll be gone, but if you were always there for them in life, then you'll always be there in their heart too x
I miss my dad hearing this song , i lost him in 2015, while i listened to this song in the cassette 'But seriously' in 1990s. my inspiration of my life. I miss u dad. very very much.
Somewhere down the road, you're gonna find a place It seems so far, but it never is You won't need to stay, but you might lose your strength On the way Sometimes you may feel you're the only one Cause all the things you thought were safe, now they're gone But you won't be alone, I'll be here to carry you along Watching you 'til all your work is done When you find your heart, you'd better run with it Cause when she comes along, she could be breaking it No there's nothing wrong, you're learning to be strong Don't look back She may soon be gone, no don't look back She's not the only one, remember that If your heart is beating fast, then you know she's right If you don't know what to say, well, that's all right You don't know what to do? Remember she is just as scared as you Don't be shy, even when it hurts to say Remember, you're gonna get hurt someday, anyway Then you must lift your head, keep it there Remember what I said I'll always be with you don't forget Just look over your shoulder I'll be there. If you look behind you, I will be there.
I have been a perfect son but sometime ago i became a bad son and after hearing this song it broke me i woul do anything to show my father i will be come a better son from today guys always love and respect our fathers
My baby boy turned 2 today. I’m so proud and have never in my life loved anything more. Soaking everything in. I know it won’t be like this forever but we will have each other forever. In present and memory.
when I first heard this song , it instantly became one of my favorite from Phil Collins. how could it not be?? the words are so profound and deep. I was single with no kids when this song was released. now, I'm married with 2 beautiful kids , one of them is my 2 year old son. I will play this song for him when he is old enough to understand the words. when he does , he will know how much I love him and want nothing but the best for him.
Oh my God.... to all my children this song is dedicated to you all..... Do not be afraid to face the world.... just look back and smile ....don't be shy.... just remember this song....
I lost my dad 30 years when I was 24..a day hasnt passed since then that I havent thought about him.....I have a son who right now is going through a tough time in his life,,,I sent him this video and hope it gives him some more strength.....
Theres just something about this song that gives me butterflies as soon as that first note hits. It's just so damn emotional. Makes me think of my father every time I listen to it. It makes me grateful that he is still with me to this day and to cherish every moment. One day when he passes, i will always look back on this song.
Ever since I was born my dad has worked for 12 hrs a day at his workplace . I only got to see him on Sunday's. It's been 16 years and it's still like that, I try to get anytime I have for my dad
MrThepomm or cats in the cradle by harry chapin. That one always gets me when im working too much and missing out on my kids childhoods. They grow up tooo fast.
When I was little, my dad didn't really live with me. I only got to see him on weekends, for a similar reason. But that didn't last long, (It was only a few years, and it ended about twenty years ago.) and now he's been here to stay.
never new my dad tried finding him but it was too late died of cancer 2 years ago luckily my 4 kid's no there's and i've played this to my 2 son's and i'll have it played at my funeral phil one word for this song awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song is for my son who lives in Norway and I in the states. He moved with his mom when he was 14 and now is 20. Thank you Phil for pulling my heart strings and helping me think about him. This song is in my Ipod and listen always.
sung this song to my boy brandon wen he was just 6 months old ....it used to send him to sleep wen i sung ......his 20 now and havent seen him since he was 7 .......best memory ever ......luv dad
Take it this way: each time the song plays over the radio... just on a spur of the moment, Dad is smiling down on you from heaven. I bet he's proud that a 17 year old kid has fantastic taste in music too!
When I listen to this song, I feel very sad, because I miss the warmth and understanding of a dad like Phil describes a father. I think we just don't get along that well and never will. I try to understand him and sometimes I do, but it seems he is not able to give me love, understanding and support. It's all I need from him. I tried to explain it a thousand times, but it is not going to happen. Unless a miracle happens. Phil has made a song of the dad I would like to have. I still love my dad, but I am also very frightened of him. Luckily there are many beautiful fathers, who are doing very well to take care of their families. I know it is his incapacity and I have many incapacities too, I don't deny that. And most important, I believe in a heavenly Father, who never gives up on me. I wish nobody would have a father like mine, living with eachother is so complicated, because we have too many negative similarities. I am thankful for the Holidays I spent with him and my older brother and our trips just around the corner. All the best from the Netherlands.
+Bart de Haas Keep your head up. Some fathers are not good parents. Same holds true for mothers. I got divorced when my son was 2. I discovered infidelity on her part. Always remember, it's not your fault. Never is or was. Focus on you. Be strong. Study hard. Do your best. Be proud of who you are. Always hold your head up hight. Unlike your dad, I was a very active part of my son's life. Still am. We are close. He's an honors student. Earned a full scholarship to one of the finest universities in the United States. I'm a proud papa. So, heres what you do. Prove to him what an ass he's been and kick ass. Do it for you and nobody else. Life is wonderful. Go get it! You can do it! Best wishes!
What a pity to hear that. But at the same time, it's kind of comforting to read in your comment that I'm not alone. I try to find a good balance. I just need to take enough time to find it.+xsanchezz
+Bart de Haas Bart I too have struggled throughout my 48yrs of my life with the same sentiments of my Dad. Father's Day would always be hard for I could never find a card that displayed what I truly received from him as a Dad. I could never amount to what my Dad wanted me to be, no matter how much I tried. He once told me I should have never been born...it hurt me to my core. Not to long ago the Lord told me to 'Repent' to my Dad. I did not quite understand why but I did. Since I've done that I truly see the love my Dad has for me. God showed me why he was unable to be the father I had wanted him to be but the father He only knew how to be. Since I've done that a peace has come over me that I cannot explain. I have ALWAYS loved my Father and now I understand what he was, rather, than what he was not. He's 73yrs old today and I spoke with him for about 3 minutes in the end; I told him I LOVE him and he said he Loved me. That was all! What started the ball rolling came from my Pastor's sermon. He said, "un-forgiveness is like drinking poison hoping the other person dies". Thankfully God gave me a son whom I showed the exact opposite of what I received from my Dad. I am grateful for that because he has flourished from a respectful boy into a Div. 1 College Football Player! Stay Strong Brother! God Bless!
living2liveagain1 Thank you for this beautiful response. As a christian, I think what you just described is THE way for me to go, but I need the time to find God in my busy life. Although I do not have a son like you, or even a wife, I do know that God has made a time for everything and that what He wants me to do is God. I wish you the best with your son and the rest of your family! God bless!
I'm a mom and most of my kids life I was single parent but, I've dedicated this to my 2 sons who age my world ..... so many memories of Phil Collins songs playing in background xxx
when this song came out even before I was a father, I knew one day it would be my guide to raise my son. now at 48 years old, I am blessed with a beautiful 6 year old daughter and an amazing 17 month old son. thank you Phil.
I am growing old and so are my parents, the sheer thought of them not being around cripples me entirely :( I'm the only son of my parents, I'll be really lonely :'(
This song is so sad; my father died when i was 13 years and i've never met him. I've never had a father to talk to me like this, Thank you Phil you did it for me in this song, it is my favorite song of But seriously.
I never knew there was a video for this song. I was proud of my 5 year old son and this song came to my mind so I TH-cam it... a masterpiece. They don't write songs like these anymore.
I'VE ABSOLUTELY LOVED YOUR MUSIC SINCE I WAS 12 EVEN AFTER YOU WENT SOLO MR COLLINS. I DO PRAY THAT YOU CAN SING AGAIN SOON I'M NOT ABLE TO GET TO ANY OF YOUR CONCERTS YOU'VE HAD IN THE PAST BUT THAT'S NEVER STOPPED ME FROM LISTENING TO YOUR NEW MUSIC OR OLD MUSIC
That's Phil and Simon, Phil's son in the video from when they were both growing up. Possibly some footage from Strand On The Wold in West London but I might be mistaken.
Genesis was extremely lucky to have such a gifted song writer and musician. Almost all of his songs are based on or come from his relationships. Gifted person
I grew up without a dad, lost my oldman when i was 5. Now am in medschool and sometimes it gets really hard to a point where it breaks me.But eachtime i need motivation, courage and when i miss my oldman, I turn to phil

You have empathy.

We should work on that, Marvin.
Somewhere down the road, you're gonna find a place
It seems so far, but it never is
You won't need to stay, but you might lose your strength
On the way
Sometimes you may feel you're the only one
Cause all the things you thought were safe, now they're gone
But you won't be alone, I'll be here to carry you along
Watching you 'til all your work is done
When you find your heart, you'd better run with it
Cause when she comes along, she could be breaking it
No there's nothing wrong, you're learning to be strong
Don't look back
She may soon be gone, no don't look back
She's not the only one, remember that
If your heart is beating fast, then you know she's right
If you don't know what to say, well, that's all right
You don't know what to do?
Remember she is just as scared as you
Don't be shy, even when it hurts to say
Remember, you're gonna get hurt someday, anyway
Then you must lift your head, keep it there
Remember what I said
I'll always be with you don't forget
Just look over your shoulder I'll be there.
If you look behind you, I will be there.
Big. Boy's don't crie. Fuck u
makes me cry ..very good lyrics
Behruz Huseynov well done

I have been a perfect son but sometime ago i became a bad son and after hearing this song it broke me i woul do anything to show my father i will be come a better son from today guys always love and respect our fathers
I dedicated this son to my child. This song made me 😢. I love him so much .
Still a great song.
I always think of my lovely 14 year old son who is very nice-natured.A sweet boy.
Our children are our entire world.
16 now
I lost my dad 30 years when I was 24..a day hasnt passed since then that I havent thought about him.....I have a son who right now is going through a tough time in his life,,,I sent him this video and hope it gives him some more strength.....
Theres just something about this song that gives me butterflies as soon as that first note hits. It's just so damn emotional. Makes me think of my father every time I listen to it. It makes me grateful that he is still with me to this day and to cherish every moment. One day when he passes, i will always look back on this song.
My parents are in their 70's and enjoying whatever time i have left with them.
I just dedicated this beautiful song to my son. Today is his birthday. May you have many more! Love you, Petey!
This song will NEVER fail to choke me up. It's one of VERY few songs that always have, even with me being near 40.
Love and miss you as always, dad. You are always in my mind forever.
Ever since I was born my dad has worked for 12 hrs a day at his workplace . I only got to see him on Sunday's. It's been 16 years and it's still like that, I try to get anytime I have for my dad
Show him the Lyrics or play him 'The Living Years' by Mike and the Mechanics!
Best soul music best for my sons

I'm the father to three almost grown children.
Just reading what you posted hurt me immensely. I'm sorry.
paul leigh keep strong
LOVE THIS SONG....ALWAYS HAS ME IN TEARS THOUGH.... LYRICALLY PERFECT..
+Bart de Haas man I know what you mean...I`m in the same situation like you....
God bless!
The flow the harmony in the music is in another level
Greatest song of all times
I'm a mom and most of my kids life I was single parent but, I've dedicated this to my 2 sons who age my world ..... so many memories of Phil Collins songs playing in background xxx
Xgfg e o trabalho de
when this song came out even before I was a father, I knew one day it would be my guide to raise my son. now at 48 years old, I am blessed with a beautiful 6 year old daughter and an amazing 17 month old son. thank you Phil.
I was the first and last person to carry my son. This song is beautiful but reminds me of all the things i won't get to teach him. sleep well bug

Lost my Dad in January to cancer, listened to this song after and knew he was still with me in spirit.
Just came back from the hospital, seeing my son for the first time....
Have tears in my eyes. I have 16 abd 12 year old sons. They are my heart, my soul and my happiness. They are my life.
Well said
I love what you said in the liner notes. Knowing that his son loves music, the planet comes off as good heart, makes me smile. BIG!
I DO PRAY THAT YOU CAN SING AGAIN SOON I'M NOT ABLE TO GET TO ANY OF YOUR CONCERTS YOU'VE HAD IN THE PAST BUT THAT'S NEVER STOPPED ME FROM LISTENING TO YOUR NEW MUSIC OR OLD MUSIC
my son didn't pass away but it feels like it, He got married, they don't visit us any more. My heart is broken.
👏👏
That's Phil and Simon, Phil's son in the video from when they were both growing up.
Possibly some footage from Strand On The Wold in West London but I might be mistaken.
I sure miss my dad 19 years on, wondering about all we didn't get to do together.
Genesis was extremely lucky to have such a gifted song writer and musician. Almost all of his songs are based on or come from his relationships. Gifted person
It’s like every song he has sung is about my life. Now soon I’ll have to leave my son on his own and it breaks my heart.
Beautiful song written from the heart. I'd expect nothing less from Mr Collins.
There is no one better, the greatest of all time.
Agree whole heartily
I lost my dad 7 years ago and everytime I listened to this song...I remembered him...and I would cry....
