As I've learned more about Canada there have been many things that have impressed me, which is why today I am very excited to react and watch this video about the reasons why Canada is the best country in the world. I’m an American living in Canada for the past 50 years. Must tell you that you’ve made me aware of lots of things about my adopted country I didn’t know. Thank you! Besides cold winters - that are really not as bad as they are reputed to be because the weather is generally sunny, the air is very dry and therefore more bearable and good Winter clothing, especially made in Canada, really make all the difference - the only other “flaw” this country has are the very high taxes - of all kinds. Canadian families with a family income of CA$227,500 or higher pay 53% of the country’s total taxes; the bottom 20% earning less than CA$56,500 pay 0.8% of income taxes and 2.1% of total taxes; those in the middle pay 37.8%. (Ref: National Post- Oct 27, 2022) No retirement haven for middle class retirees! Unless, of course, they get sick. All those taxes do pay for pretty good health/home care, excellent hospitals and a good portion of prescribed drugs. As well as an almost free, excellent collège/university education for their grandchildren. The peace and gun-free tranquility make it, at least for me, quite worth it.

    • @learningisfun2108
      @learningisfun2108 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Good comment. I do love how our tax system works. I pay a lot of taxes and don’t buy into the “rampant government waste” story that’s been drilled into western mindset for the last 40 years. Rather, I feel we get what we pay for: good government, good healthcare, very good education, social welfare, good infrastructure. However, I have an issue with your assertion that Canadian university system is “almost free”. You must have Canada confused with another country. While not as expensive as prestigious American universities, our system is still quite expensive for the average student. Our universities nationwide do not seem to have the wide range of quality as the US (from very poor to super high quality), Canadian universities are consistently high quality; but certainly not inexpensive.

      It’s humid in New Brunswick. Our provincial bird is the mosquito! When it’s hot it’s horrible because the high humidity does not allow sweat to evaporate, so you go around feeling hot and sticky. Thankfully we have the Ocean (Bay of Fundy) to go sit by and cool off.

I LOVED my childhood of travelling and there are so many places in the world I feel I have left a little piece of my heart in. But as a full grown, educated man now, I still stand back in awe every once and awhile and reflect on what we have created for ourselves here in this country. Most friends and family I know also do this peridocically. When I was younger I believed it was the Scandinavian countries, but now I honestly believe Canada is the best option for a society of what humans have been able to come up with so far. As far as equality, democracy and fairness, I think we top the list. Like people, countries are always growing, always learning; and we have along way to go and a lot of things to work on. But I do feel incrediby lucky to have won the mix of random die rolls and hard choices made by my ancestors that landed me here in this time.

    One big difference I’ve noticed between traveling between Canada and the US (I’m biased as I’m Canadian), is the amount of poverty in the US. The disparity between the rich and poor in the US is huge. Huge swaths of decreprid communities in the US between areas of opulence. You don’t see that in Canada where it looks like the standard of living is only slightly different in different areas of the country. You only have to look between the two sides of the border between Niagara Falls US and Canada for a perfect example of what I mean. Niagara Falls US is not a desirable place to live and the difference is stark. It’s a difference that is obvious all over the US, where there is a lot of shanty towns. The US system is really geared toward and controlled by the affluent, and the disparity between the rich and poor will be America’s downfall eventually. I think the lack of public healthcare is a big part of this as a healthy population is a wealthy population. When illness can bankrupt people, through no fault of their own, it doesn’t make for a healthy society in general.

As a Canadian, I think one of our biggest strengths is that we realize we are not perfect and that we should always be looking for ways to make our society better. For example recently how Indigenous people have been treated as well as how people of colour have historically been treated has come to the forefront of a national conversation, where we are realizing and accepting that as a country we need to do better than those who came before us did. Also in one of the comments you read off the video it talked about Canada and fresh water. Canada has 20 percent of the world’s fresh water. My favourite beach in the entire world is actually on a lake in canada. Sauble beach on lake huron is absolutely amazing. it's all fresh water, super clear, is never too cold and has very little vegetation or muck, and the lake has a really strange undertow that creates sand dunes for kilometers. Walk out 20 feet and you're ankle deep, walk out another 5 feet you're 6 feet deep, swim out another 30 feet and you're hip deep and repeat. The undertow like I mentioned is also super strange as it pulls you sideways. if you sit in the sand in the water you will be pulled along the beach. We'd always set up a little north from the town and as the lake pulls us we'd arrive in the town for lunch, then swim or walk our way back to our spot.

Peace of mind without the fear of bankruptcy is worth the tax money. It is unfathomable to me how a first world country has a system that could bankrupt their citizens at the worst possible time, right as they find out they have to deal with health issues....or when they are having a child. Because of the permafrost, you won't see buildings over maybe 5 stories, and less the further north you go. All of the capitols are not as far north as many smaller cities, towns, and villages. Great video Tyler. I agree and love the mix of historic and modern buildings in our cities. I live in Toronto, and the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) is one of my favourite buildings because I find the architecture so cool. It's an old historic Romanesque-style building constructed in 1912, I believe, but a more modern portion was added on to it, and it looks really cool as a result.

    I really enjoy your videos. I just have to point out a point of view from a Canadian that is native to the land. I am indigenous. Yes, Canada is very accepting of immigrants but not to the original people. Look up stats of the races populating our prisons and our foster care system. Look up the poverty level of reserves in Canada, the unsafe drinking water in many reserves across Canada. Many people are oblivious to this, because it’s so much easier to concentrate on the good. But when you sweep it under the rug then really is it good? Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the people that have fought for our freedom in Canada, including many indigenous people. The language speakers were integral in that success.
    If Canada is so inclusive, then why are the First Nations, Métis and Inuit not included?

      Thank you for pointing this out. I am not indigenous but I have been hoping Tyler would address indigenous communities in a video one of these days. Even if it would be too dark for his channel to discuss in depth the suffering throughout history (and in the present time) but to acknowledge the beautiful cultures and histories and traditions that can never be erased! I really love places in Ontario like the archaeology museum and the mcmichael gallery that focus on preserving and celebrating indigenous communities, artwork, history, and culture! I’ve been trying to learn more about Toronto’s indigenous history and theres surprisingly few TH-cam videos I’ve found, but I’m trying to get more books and such so I can learn more directly from indigenous voices. It can be difficult mentally sometimes to balance being grateful to Canada for accepting my family as immigrants while also knowing that those systems are the same systems that committed horrors against the native people. It’s so easy for the world to think of Canada as the metropolitan Toronto and Vancouver and Montreal and forget how much else is out there, both good and bad. I have family in the prairies so I know too well about how racist Canada can be, on an individual and societal level. The reparations are truly nowhere near enough. An Inuit friend of mine has lived her whole life severely impacted by the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women, and it opened my eyes at an early age to the serious neglect from this country’s government. I’ll never forget my horrors when I learned of the residential schools and saw a map of just how far and wide they were.. but it’s also so easy for us immigrants to focus on the pain and forget how vibrant and beautiful Canada’s indigenous peoples are and always have been! I think if we as immigrants can direct more energy toward education, celebration and appreciation, it will go a long way in terms of fighting discrimination and systemic racism. My husband’s father grew up on the tyendinaga mohawk reserve and it’s crazy to see how even this month they are still fighting for reparations to do with unsurrendered land. Better late than never I suppose…

      I appreciate that indigenous people were (and still are by some) treated horribly but I truly think many in the country are aware and genuinely trying to make amends. For comparison look at the US trail of tears and marching native peoples to the worst real estate in the land. I don't think compensation or recognition of what was done there is even remotely on the radar and many are still living in terrible conditions without safe water and other facilities. Of course that is no excuse for us or what happened here. We have a long way to go but I believe we are really trying. Our Governor General is an example of the respect owed and given. I respect the traditions, languages and culture of the FIRST Canadians.

    About that "escape to natural beauty" ...pretty much anywhere in Canada has natural beauty very close by. Obviously large cities have limited natural vistas , but they certainly do have them in the form of parks, harbours and other areas where natural sights or gardens are set aside. In the smaller cities and towns, a very short drive or walk will take you to a lovely place to walk or find enjoyment in your surroundings or engage in a sport of some type.
