    Thanks for the kind words Brandon! That's the Plugable USB2-HUB4BC which is our other tested / recommended hub for the Pi (and is currently in stock in Europe, while 7 port is sold out there). Thanks!

    After having a few bad experiences with Belkin and other USB hubs, I purchased a 4-port Plugable hub off Amazon (had not seen this video). I have to say, I love it! It works flawlessly, doesn't send current upstream (into the USB data ports on the Pi), and is very solidly made. Great work, Plugable!

    Thanks for asking! We don't recommend the 7 port version of our USB 3.0 hub, because some users have reported problems (probably because of the cascaded dual 4-port controllers). So we'd recommend sticking with the USB 2.0 hub recommended above. But then the Plugable Storage system products all work well (search "plugable pss"). Hope that helps - thanks!

    I do like the courteous Plugabletech responses to those folk for whom "the elevator doesn't seem to go up to the top floor"! Big patience there! Seems some people just can't grasp the idea that the 'Pi' is interesting as a hobbyist/experimental/entertainment tool. A tool that a lot of people can afford!

    the idea of it being unsafe comes from metallic looking ESD safe bags being slightly conductive to form a faraday cage, protecting the contents within the bag. the faraday cage effect allows for electrons to travel across the surface, not through, but canbe considered unsafe since ESD is contained on the outer surface (area of effect we are focusing on)

    The hub only comes with its own cable back to the host (in this case, the Pi) -- it's a mini-B to A cable. So you'd still need that 2nd cable separately to power the Pi. Thanks for asking!

  • @Plugable
    @Plugable  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mostly, it was to show off our products that are Pi compatible. But you might want to use it for performance (it gets ~ 2x 10/100 speeds), to reduce the load on the Pi, etc. But the most common use is to get multiple network iterfaces to use the Pi for routing and firewalling scenarios.

  • @BerniePlugable
    @BerniePlugable 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The adapter plugged in there is not one of our products that we sell, but it's actually just simply an HDMI to DVI passive adapter -- since the Pi only has HDMI output, and the monitor we had there only had DVI input. Thanks!

    Thanks. I got the USB 2.0 7 port hub like you have here. I also am able to power the Pi, mouse, keyboard, external HDD, external USB Flash Reader. Going to try adding Bluetooth and the WIFi card on the hub next. I am totally sold on pluggable.

    I set one of these up and found it way too slow for a desktop. You can barely get through a TH-cam video with the current Linux stacks available. Still a lot of fun to play with and think of ideas.

  • @Plugable

    Yes, no problem (as long as Raspian has the CD and filesystem drivers loaded).

    An audio signal does go through the HDMI connection. I've used a Raspberry Pi model B with a 1080 TV, a 720 TV and a 1080 monitor. That particular monitor doesn't have speakers, so I had to use the 3.6 mm audio jack.

  • @FranseFrikandel
    @FranseFrikandel 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes it can, it has built in pins so it can control most devices, however you might want to use a Arduino if it needs to connect into a lot of motors and stuff, as it has more pins to connect.

  • @BerniePlugable
    @BerniePlugable 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for asking! No, because the micro-b port of the Pi is (AFAIK) for power only. Data lines are ignored. So no infinite USB recursion here. :)

  • @Plugable

    It's not needed for the first network connection. But it's useful if you'd like to turn the Pi into a DMZ or router with multiple networks.

    I have a pi as well. Yes, you could set it up to be a full desktop, but after 10 minutes of super slowness you'll go back your actual setup. I manly use mine as a super cheap ftp server for media steaming and network backups. Works ok, as long as your not in a hurry to move large files. I could be a nice back up computer though.

    We don't recommend using USB 3.0 hubs with the Pi (we've had negative reports), but for a USB 3.0 capable laptop, it's what you'll want. We'd recommend our best selling 7 port model. Search "Plugable USB3-HUB7-81X". Thanks!

    If that's an anti-static bag, please don't set components on the outside of it. Since the outside is the conductive part of the bag, and you can introduce shorts, and allow static to have more contact area on the circuits of the Raspberry Pi.

  • @bob-who-must-not-be-named8522
    @bob-who-must-not-be-named8522 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you ever tested a anti-static shield bag? It is not conductive. Take a meter and measure it yourself. I'm an electronics tech and I do it all the time. The bag only shields, does not drain away static. Even a conductive static mat commonly used on workbenches is very high resistance (tens of megohms) and can be used with live power.

  • @BerniePlugable
    @BerniePlugable 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi - it's actually trickier than that. For USB 2.0, 100mA is the limit before negotiation. 500mA is the limit you can negotiate up to. But nowadays, most hubs and hosts have more than 500mA per port available, if the device pulls it. And there is a Battery Charging standard which allows device to negotiate up to 1800mA, but only a few devices use it (the Pi does not). And there are Apple and Samsung proprietary methods of signaling that 1A or 2.1A, etc. are OK to draw. Again, a mess.

    Unfortunately it will not reduce load on the Pi, as the built-in ethernet is provided by the LAN9512 chip (which is the next largest chip after the SOC, located directly behind the USB ports). It actually functions as a 10/100 ethernet port and USB 2.0 Hub, being controlled on the SMbus and connecting to the SOC's one (and only) USB port. So essentially the built-in ethernet *is* USB! This is also why Model A Pi's only have the single USB port (since they lack ethernet and hence the hub). :)

    Hi Brunno - Unfortunately, Brasil is one of the more difficult countries to ship to, because of customs. You may already have experienced this. When we've accepted orders from Basil in the past, we've often seen multi-week delays and frequent lost packages (and import duties over 50%, which if the receiver doesn't know about it is a big problem). Unfortunately, we can't ship things if we can't guarantee delivery, so now we have to turn away orders from Brasil. Sorry, wish we could.

    Would the Plugable Storage System USB 3.0 2.5″ SATA Drive Dock and USB 3.0 Hub work with the Raspberry Pi. I understand the Pi is not USB3,0, but it should work with USB2.0, right? Thought this might be a great way to incorporate the extra storage space with the benefit of USB ports.

  • @Debraj1978
    @Debraj1978 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do not think, its same as tin foil. The conductive coating on anti-static bag is correct, but the resistance of the conductivity is high, and hence would not conduct any current for 5V or 3.3V. It though is conductive enough for high voltages that is encountered in static discharges.

    Do I get a Raspberry Pi B+, a Banana Pi, a PCDuino or do I really push the boat out and get a Hummingboard?

      GeoNeilUK I own the Banana Pi but it's seriously lacking community support. It's a great piece of hardware, however, but just people don't want to give it the time of day. So many OSes made for the Raspberry Pi don't work because of a different GPU and ARMv7 (vs. the Raspberry's ARMv6) processor and people can't be bothered to port over OSes because they dismiss it as a cheap knockoff.

    • @someitguy2175

      m1aws Generally speaking static charge builds up on the outer layers of those bags. Its just not good practice.

    • @m1aws
      @m1aws 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Mast They are not insulators. This would murder the electronics upon touching them. Here is a great write up on a forum.
      Anti-static packaging is electrically conductive, but very poorly so - if you test it with a conventional DMM it will be out of range. Most commonly the material is polyethylene doped to make it slightly conductive. The shiny metallic looking bags usually use 2 layers of this, with a thin aluminium of other metal layer inbetween
      Here's a link with lots of detail about different types of pacakging and how they differ:
      www.staticcontrol.com/pdfs/P1...atic%20Bag.pdf
      Al foil provides great protection for storage, but its very low resistance brings with it another problem. If a part has a static charge at one point, placing it onto the Al, could potentially result in a very high discharge current as the static is dissipated. That high current is potentially damaging. Use of high-resistance materials limits the discharge current to a safe level.
      Mark R is offline
      Let me add, in the company I worked for, there was another bag that was yellow in colour. These were static dissipative bags, and yes, more suitable for placing components on or static creating items inside, like paperwork etc..
      It's all irrelevant anyway because the Pi was connected up.

    • @someitguy2175
      @someitguy2175 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      m1aws There's a difference between what can be done and best practice. My OP was the perfectionist in me coming out, but at least we all know not to let you touch our electronics ;-)

      No. It needs the SD Card for booting. But you can have it switch to a root on an USB drive during the boot. There are guides for that available. It can be tricky, depending on the USB device but it's doable.
      And yes, you can create a swap-partition on an external drive.

      It can actually boot from a USB, but you will still need an SD card to "tell" the pi to boot off of the USB.

      The boot partition as well as the kernelimage are still on the SD card, it's just, that the root partition can be on an attached USB device. So it still boots from the card it just mounts root from somewhere else.
