It always bugs me a little when people quote Kennedy as saying “We choose to go to the moon” - like yeah, we do, and that’s great and all, but that’s the least important part of the sentence. It sets a specific timeline for the goal (“in this decade”) and explains why, on a philosophical level, it is important (“not because they are easy, but because they are hard”) and so on.
Another great channel by Simon. I can’t wait for future episodes. Bonus fact: Taco Bell set up a barge in the Pacific ocean with a bull’s-eye on it when the Mire re-entered the atmosphere. You seem like a really cool dude, and have a very well thought out person and style. Good job and thank you for the hard work.
Can't believe I missed this one, brilliant as ever. About that guy who sold his business and then spent a fortune becoming a space tourist. In 2002 South African businessman, Mark Shuttleworth spent 8 days on the ISS as a space tourist. In 1999 he sold his IT company to VeriSign for about $600 Million. He spent about $20 Million for his trip into space which included a full year training as a cosmonaut, so he was left with a pretty decent chunk of change.
Mir was the first modular station; designed to have additional modules attached over time. Earlier stations only had a docking port for resupply and crew changes. Edit the first “space station” was actually the OPS 0855, which was launched in November of 1966 and had 11 experiments on board. Being unmanned and in a low earth orbit, its orbit decayed in January of 1967. Manned stations were planned to be launched in 1969 but funding issues and delays caused the program to be canceled in June of 1969.
There were two Skylabs built. One went up, and the other went to D.C. I have walked through it in the air and space museum. I imagine it's still there. It's hard to think they would attempt to move such a massive item! But they learned many, many things. And that is worth a story by itself!
Space travel is full of inanity so it would surprise me if the Irish sent astronauts with booze. Fun fact: Mongolia, Cuba, Vietnam, Israel, pretty much all of Europe, and Afghanistan all beat the Chinese into space, some early Russian Cosmonauts were sent into space with shotguns in case they crashed or landed in Siberia, and the first men on the moon had to wait in quarantine in case they caught any infections from the moon or space.

Yes, precisely!! They were able to compare not only the astronaut's before and after chromosomes and DNA, but also with his twin's, whose (unsurprisingly) didn't change during the period. As I recall, the astronaut's changed quite a bit, and in interesting ways that they wouldn't have been able to see without the twin!

Regarding the "people living in converted fuel tanks" thing, it happened. Skylab was built/converted from the second stage of a Saturn rocket left over from the Apollo missions.
Next year im gonna make a video called "top 10 channels not run by simon whistler that are run by simon whistler" as an april fools joke if you continue like this.
Simon, the core of Skylab was a repurposed hydrogen tank from the third stage of a Saturn V. So, yeah, there were a bunch of guys living in space in an empty fuel canister. They were also the first mutiny in space too, so bonus cool points.
What about Skylab? That was an empty fuel tank, and built only by the US trying to match the Soviets, even though it was damaged and abandoned rather quickly.
Siri is only good for comic relief in YT videos. It's ridiculously stupid and inefficient to use compared to simply doing it the old school way and typing in a search box.
This is a pretty interesting channel concept. I don't know if there are really enough mega projects to feed a channel but if there are I'm sure Simon has the ability to keep them interesting.
Just throwing this out there: in the brief history of space stations you missed Skylab - NASA's first space station launched at the end of '73 and lasted for a few months.

What about Skylab? That was an empty fuel tank, and built only by the US trying to match the Soviets, even though it was damaged and abandoned rather quickly.
I dig this, saw Three Gorges Dam, B-52, and now ISS... with that... subbed! Better than the other channels for sure!
Simon: Hey Siri! What’s 100 metres converted to feet?
Siri: don’t forget to wash your hands
Simon: *throws script on floor*
Siri bout to catch a beating.
Uppity, useless little bastard.
YOU WASH YOUR HANDS!
Siri is only good for comic relief in YT videos. It's ridiculously stupid and inefficient to use compared to simply doing it the old school way and typing in a search box.
Megaprojects
Definitely not at terminator level yet
This is a pretty interesting channel concept. I don't know if there are really enough mega projects to feed a channel but if there are I'm sure Simon has the ability to keep them interesting.
Just throwing this out there: in the brief history of space stations you missed Skylab - NASA's first space station launched at the end of '73 and lasted for a few months.
LOVE IT!! Can't wait for the next video! Thanks Simon!
I thought for sure this video would be sponsored by "Raid, Shadow Legends!" mwahahahaha
I just saw a video made by another guy with a raid shadow legends plug in it. I lost a little respect for that guy.
Here we are yet
again.
Another channel with you and I.
Well, I'm stoked! Let's get this beast bouncing! WooHoo!
(Damn, I think I've been cooped up inside for too long)😝🤪😜
"I apologize Americans... This is terrible!" He said that....
By the way Simon, the UK does/did have a space program. For example, the Beagle Mars Lander program leader was The Open University in Milton Keynes.
I like Simon's videos... His attempts at pronunciation of non English names are often hilarious (I sympathize with him).
Brian, will you be keeping count of the bad dam bum ssshhhhh' s and other fun things to count? 😁
@@SonjaPierce Only on business blaze - I'll have two full time jobs otherwise... and Simon's videos are unpaid for me at least. I have no idea how many hundreds of thousands Simon makes. :-)
@@brianjrichman oh good, we still get them on BB. They're funny and add some variety. Thank you for doing it!
@@SonjaPierce Someone else is doing them too. Not a big deal and I'm sure that together we can come up with some "Witty Repose" to Simon's videos. If it all helps him in the long run to keep making these videos then to be honest, I'm happy with that.
Somebody do a REMIX!!!
Finally ! I too thought the amount of content you were producing was a little light.
In all seriousness though, congratulation for your first episode !
LMAO, as an Irishman I love the Irish module as a bar!!!
Another fine addition to your collection Simon congrats on the new channel
0:14 “Megaprojects” much more creative 👌🏾😂
Simon you have filled my 90s Discovery Channel void. Thank You!!
Got the email and now I'm here
Another great quarantine boredom killer. keep making channels I'll keep subscribing
So I’m with Armstrong on whether he pronounced the “a” in his “small step for a man” quote. I’ve heard many other cases of people saying “a” and it coming out just as abbreviated as Neil said it, yet nobody questions it.
I like this slightly crazy, possibly intoxicated (?) Simon. Very entertaining (and informative, as always)!
The Legendary Legends will always win first place in the comment space race!
Simon: "That's the Irish module. What's it do? It's a bar." SO deadpan, I literally belly laughed and nearly fell out of my chair! I had to pause the video, and laugh for nearly 5 minutes before I was able to continue.
Best Simon line EVER!!!
My fourth grade teacher I had is Bill Shepard's mom. I was lucky enough to be in fourth grade at the time
Really enjoy your content, Simon, it hits that sweet spot where informative and interesting interject. If you’re looking for a new subject for upcoming videos I’d love to see your take on the Norwegian Troll A oil platform. It’s absolutely massive, and still holds a few records IIRC, like still being the largest object moved by man. Anyway, hope you have a nice summer!
Not zero gravity, it's still affected by the gravity of Earth, and is continuously falling towards Earth and just missing it because being on orbit...
So good to see you again Simon..
I came across this channel just today..
"Well, that´s the Irish module. It´s a Bah!" haha
I'm hooked... Subscribed. And yes, this is SimonTube @D4md Cykey I watch every channel that Simon's on. It's never boring, knowledgeable and Simon is a cool ass host with the most that speaks the Queens English. That's guy is dope!
"This is all in metric, sorry Americans!" (Thanks!) "It's as big as a soccer pitch."
Americans, "What the hell is a pitch?"
I had to look that up to be sure you meant "field." LOL
Learn something new every day!
Love the new channel! I just automatically subscribe to everything you do... I imagine you sleep in your Vid studio now? And we're so close to the 'Top Tenz' vid - the *Top Ten Simon Whistler TH-cam Channels!*
