    I chose the EV6. The dual motor AWD version is pretty much as quick as the Tesla, it rides really well, and in my view it's a better-resolved design. In fact, I think it's one of the best-looking cars on the market. But it's great to have a choice between so many really good EVs these days.

  • @rjbrimage1970

    Fab balanced review. I am one of the lucky few here in the UK who actually took delivery of an EV6 2 weeks ago so actually have the benefit of having driven mine for over 600 miles during the first 2 weeks of ownership and can firmly report that I am so glad I didn't wait for the Model Y.
    I had guesstimated the price of the model Y at around £50k and was staggered to see it is starting at £55k, so by comparison the EV6 is stunning value.
    I have the EV6 GT Line RWD for £11k less. What do I gain and lose for my £11k?
    Well the Model Y has a bigger boot but the EV6 at 520 litres is hardly small, I can fold the back seats down and have 2m of space to lie down in if I want to sleep in it too. So hardly a huge issue.
    I lose AWD, but unless you really need to I'd be paying for something I don't really need (EV6 also has snow mode).
    Model Y is faster to 60 but the acceleration on mine is plenty for most people. The EV6 from standstill really shoots off impressively.
    What have I gained with the EV6? Faster charging than the Tesla, who would have thought of that a few years ago. And yes I know the fast chargers are limited but at least its future proofed as the network improves. Yes Tesla has the supercharger network and that is impressive but apparently that will be opened up by the end of 2022 anyway, great !
    I also gain nicer looks with the Kia (Tesla just sticks to that jelly mould design), far better build quality (I do know a bit about these things, my previous car was an E class Mercedes), a 7 yr Kia warranty, a much nicer ride, superb handling and vehicle to load for those camping trips or a quick brew on a long journey.
    I also prefer the more conventional dashboard vs minimalist Tesla. Yes yes it's personal choice but having to move the vents and even adjust the rear seat passenger heating settings for them just feels like a bit of a faff quite frankly.
    I fully respect anyone preferring the Tesla, it all depends on your priority, but £11k in my back pocket for a lovely looking, fast charging, well built EV6 with a long warranty, lovely compliant ride and handling is the winner for me. I was worried when I started watching Model Y reviews I would regret my decision to buy the EV6 but all it has done is reassure myself that I had in fact made the right choice (for me 🙂).
    Hope you find this interesting and thought provoking.

      Very interesting, thanks for the detailed post, you make a good case for EV6 vs Y. On the other hand, if the luggage capacity of the Y was not a necessity, a Model 3 might have been sufficient? It would have been cheaper/ quicker than the EV6.

      I would choose the ev6 in rear wheel drive in red colour,such a beautiful looking car so much better looking than the Tesla, I hope to get one of these in a couple of years,plenty room for my mountain bike an camping gear an lots of room for passengers too , I'm on mission to save a big deposit so pay less on PCP finance monthly an get one of these Kia ev6,perfect car an the Mustang Mach e is another one I like but the Kia is 1st choice for me 💚👌👌👍

      You also get bi-directional charging, in a few years this is a feature that will likely be standard with EVs, but for now Kia and Hyundai are the ones leading the charge (pun!) with actually having it available.

    • @cuda426hemi
      @cuda426hemi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well for most people storage and performance are paramount. And so is charging fast and KIA has no Supercharger network. Also the fact that a KIA will devalue in 3 years and be the same car - while the Tesla will be better from OTA updates retaining it's value more. 🚗

      I got my EV6 GT Line S AWD just over a week ago after test drives of the Polestar 2 and Ioniq 5. I liked both cars, but aesthetically the EV6 trumps both, especially the Ioniq 5, which looks like it was designed in 1970 (a deliberate choice by Hyundai). I would have test driven a Model 3, but Tesla wanted me to sign an agreement to pay for any damage to the vehicle incurred during the test drive. If it had been written off, even if it was not my fault, I would have been over £50k down. So no test drive and no sale. Having sat in a Model 3, I thought the interior was a bit too plastic and flimsy, and don't get me on the guillotine-like hinge on the rear hatch. In my view, the EV6 is the better car.

One thing you noted was that you need to "upgrade" to get the electric powered boot, I have ordered the Earth / Air model and it comes as standard with that.... Good informative review! I test drove Model Y in the US, and to be honest, Tesla seems to be over using the term Minimalist to justify an absolutely cheap looking plasticky interior.. honestly i felt that the quality of the interiors resembled a low end Toyota Corolla from the 90s. Even the floor mats are of cheap quality. I went with a mindset of expecting a semi luxury car but was gravely disappointed. And the review is bang on for the ride quality. Tesla cheaped out on the Shocks and Struts too, they are using Model 3 parts for a much heavier car. However, the autonomous tech on Teslas is unbeatable at the moment.

      From a Model 3 owner for just under a year. The minimalist interior is one of it's best ownership experience features. Love it more the more I drive it. It fairly disappears around you and encourages focus on the driving - and the view of the road is outstanding. Agree on some of the materials - specially the mats which suck - but it's holding up exceptionally well, even with a dog. Luxury can be defined many ways. The interaction with all the controls and features, which continue to surprise, is outstanding and gets better all the time. On 19s, the ride is never harsh but still quite sporting. And ours - and six of our friends who have 3s and Ss, have had NO issues, even one S with a VERY hard 70K miles on it (has been to the track a few times...). The Kia is a very attractive alternative, for sure. But with the charging network, real-world range, vastly superior software-based environment, and literally minor value appreciation, day-to-day it has proven to be outstanding.

    Well, here in the states it might be a different story. I have an order in for a new model Y (AWD, 330mi range, $61,000), but just for interest sake, I checked our local KIA dealer and they had the EV6 GT-Line (AWD, 274mi range) coming in with a sticker price of....$59,945. And I've heard the dealers are marking them up even further. So, there really isn't much of a difference in price between these two comparable models. Having had EV's before (several Nissan LEAF's, a couple of Chevy Volts, and a Tesla Model X) I know the most critical factors in enjoying a road trip experience is range and the reliability/availability of charging. With the LEAF, we had to use Blink or whatever charger we could find, and often you would find them not working or they didn't have fast charging. The Tesla supercharger network solves this. You can pull up maps of every supercharger station in the country, and it will show you how many are chargers are available in real time (we've never had to wait for a Tesla charger). Plus, an extra 55 miles of range is significant if you're on a trip.
    The primary feature that interests me about the KIA/IONIQ ev's is the two way access to the battery. Not only can you put power into the battery, you can take power out of it, essentially having a free AC outlet if your house power goes out. And 77kwh is a pretty big battery to power your refrigerator or freezer during an outage (a Tesla Powerwall is only 14kwh). That's an amazing feature. Of course you can also use it at a remote campsite, a job site, etc...just don't drain it too far or you'll be stuck there!

    Both very nice cars. I'm also 6ft tall and agree that the EV6 cabin feels cramped (a problem that I don't have in my ID3 which has plenty of headroom). But at the moment, neither of these are enticing me away from my ID3 Family Edition which cost less than half the price of these cars, has a full panoramic roof, reasonably good performance and a real world range of 180-250 miles (depending of conditions).
    If i'm paying twice the price then I will only switch to a Model Y once they are using the next generation of battery tech and WLTP range is in excess of 400 miles. And as the EV6 feels too cramped I will wait for the EV7 and if that has improved headroom, a panoramic roof and upgraded battery tech with a 400+ miles range then i'm in. Otherwise i'm sticking with my ID3. My feeling is that that Tesla will get there first.

    The Tesla is a better designed car from the ground up. More efficient, better performance, better frunk and trunk, better audio and software & entertainment in another class.
    A shame Model Y doesn't come with a softer damper mode, that would have silented reviewers. Maybe the Model Ys from Berlin starting in MArch 2022 will have addressed some comfort short comings.
    The EV6 is a great car though, just more traditional and not significant potential to become an even better car over OTA updates. Teslas needs more time to understand on why they are the best designed vehicles.

I found that the frustration of misunderstood voice commands tended to distract me from driving. Happily my Tesla still had a few basic manual controls, and I got by with those. The new models don’t, although it seems they’re now crowding controls on to the steering wheel. Apart from that, the latest models doing away with the gear shift and using a square steering wheel is a triumph of style over function, and frankly dangerous.

      My Chinese built model 3 performance has impeccable quality. Only the US built ones have quality issues. But there are two things that people who will never buy a Tesla say about Teslas. One is quality, which as mentioned is up with the best now, and the other is the screen. If you don’t like the screen then fine, don’t buy it.

    • @ethelred2648
      @ethelred2648 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It only should “have a speedometer in front of the driver” because of your constrained thought process. Why should it? It’d be hard to see through the steering wheel, like traditional cars and would impede forward visibility. Embracing change is hard, but it’s what smart people do. The central display is a great idea. My BMW 440 had a tombstone satnav display in the middle of the dash, as did my 140i and my Golf R and so forth. It was lo-res and it had an operating system from hell, but no one ever mentioned it in a review. But Tesla have a central tablet and all hell breaks loose with folk complaining.
      It just works. Looking 10 degrees askew to the speed reading is no issue at all. Get over it everyone.

    Do you think it is fair to compare the Tesla Model Y at £55,000 plus to the Kia EV6 rear wheel drive at £40,000 plus? You can purchase the Kia EV6 GT line S cheaper than the Tesla which is more compatible and still cheaper. It’s like you wouldn’t compare a Nissan Leaf to a Kia EV6 as they are a completely different price bracket! Otherwise a good video, thanks.

    • @peterpage7322

      Oh and 6 months later after owning a Tesla model 3 for 7 months, we are selling it and have put a deposit down on the EV6 Gt which is much cheaper than the model y and faster. It also has cooled seats, a much nicer interior (not plastic), a heads up display which I feel is a must and a big let down on the Tesla, limited slip differential, adjustable lumber on the passenger seat, apple car play and I could go on and on. Also Kia don’t just hand the keys over and let you get on with it! Our new model 3 wasn’t even clean. When I approached them to see if I could fit an aftermarket heads up display in it, they said it would make the warranty void! Then they tell you it doesn’t need servicing……so who checks the brakes or running gear to make sure it’s safe. I suppose you have to rely on your MOT, but it seems a bit of a cop out to me, like they are not interested after they have taken your money. Don’t get me wrong, they are a great car, but Tesla have a lot to learn if they are going to compete long term.

    Whilst the model Y is more sluggish than the EV6, I don’t necessarily think the Tesla is so behind in general. Long term, yes, Tesla will be overtaken by the larger innovation and rapid pace in China and even South Korea; but at least for right now Tesla has a good following that could hold out for several years.
