Most European bands are signed to one of two record labels one being Nuclear which Sabaton is signed to and Napalm which Powerwolf is signed to. It’s kind of funny because most of Nuclear’s bands come from Western Europe while Napalm has a firm hold on Eastern Europe. Either way the bands that are signed to these labels are incredible.

Werewolf fact: between 1763 and 1766 there were dozens of kills in the southern french region of Gevaudan...it was fully documented by the french officials, but till today, its not clear who or what was responsible for a public panic and all the dead...the local answer is and was a Loup Garou...a Werewolf

I first stumbled upon Powerwolf a few years back (ironically enough while in the beginning of my own Sabaton journey) with their songs Incense & Iron and Sanctified with Dynamite, and really dug the religious-y werewolf theme, and have enjoyed their music since.
Whenever I listen to Incense & Iron I imagine the scene of helms deep from lotr, but werewolves instead of urukhai, decked out in plate armor wielding greatswords.

Welcome to the wolfpack! There are as many different legends about werewolves as there are regions in Europe. In some parts of Germany, they are the souls of felon crusaders, cursed to raise from the tomb at nightfall and fight the evil forces until daybreak. Hence the numerous religious symbols.

You ought to listen to Armata Strigoi or Incense And Iron, two really great Powerwolf songs. Amen And Attack is another great song, a couple of older songs that are really good is Coleus Sanctus , Resurrection By Erection and Sacred And Wild, in fact, several other bands have made a covers of Sacred And Wild, including Epica. We Drink Your Blood is another Powerwolf song that has been covered by a couple of groups.
Powerwolf songs get covered a lot. One of my favorite Powerwolf songs is a really obscure, older song from their early days named Extatum Et Oratum. I’m a 62 years old metal guitarist. I played in bands in the 80 and 90s and I really miss metal. Powerwolf is one of the few modern metal groups who I think would have been at home during those decades. I haven’t heard a lead vocalist like Attila in a very long time. What a voice that man has.
A lot of their earlier work, like Sanctified By Dynamite and Extatum Et Oratum used a lot of operatic parts sung in Latin. I really fell in love with that sound because it felt so German. Powerwolf is sort of like what Wilhelm Wagner might have sounded like if metal was around in his day. So many great German composers like Mozart, Beethoven or Bach would have wrote metal that sounded similar to Powerwolf, if electric guitars were around in that time period.
Listen to some of that earlier work with the opera sounding vocals sung in Latin with the heavy pipe organ sounds and see if it doesn’t make you think of the great German composers of the eighteenth and nineteenth century? A very unique sound to Powerwolf. A lot of their more recent songs don’t have as much of that flavor, but are still good metal songs.

You have got to react to Powerwolf's song "Armata Strigoi" in particular the - "Armata Strigoi (Live) - POWERWOLF - Lyrics - HD - Masters Of Rock - 2015" - version. They get the crowd involved and it is very good. "In the Name of God" is another good one live. Attila Dorn (Powerwolf's lead singer) is as good live as he is on the studio track, even better the Joakim. lol

You're not totally wrong. Attila Dorn studied opera in Bucharest since he is half Romanian and half hungarian, furthermore he's an acclaimed priest.
The additional info you're missing is that Attila is a stage character, and the real singer, Karsten Brill, just happens to have a tenor voice which he trained with a regular voice coach, now being able to sing operatic themes too. We don't actually know much about his career before his bands.

I'm glad you enjoyed Powerwolf! I feel like I should have given you some background when I suggested them. Powerwolf is a german powermetal band and their music often invokes legends about werewolves and vampires, and also tends to involve mockery of catholicism (like the music video for Demons are a Girl's Best Friend).
Other info: the song Beast of Gevaudan is about a historic event in 16th century France in the region of Gevaudan. A wolf-like creature terrorized a 50 mile area killing villagers for 3 years. The church at the time claimed it was a demonic beast sent by God to punish the unfaithful.
Since you mentioned Amaranthe, they did a cover of Army of the Night. Might be interesting to check it out! Maybe do a comparison video: pull up the lyrics in an off screen and compare the powerwolf studio version with Amaranthe's cover.

As a Frenchman, I must make a clarification about the dates. the Gévaudan events took place in the 18th century (between June 30, 1763 and June 19, 1767). In that timeline, between 88 and 124 attacks took place (mostly fatal) and suddenly stopped as they had started. Even today the nature of the beast is debated. Was it a very big wolf ? A hyena or a lion trained to kill ? A serial killer ? A werewolf ? A demon ? Or something else... The mystery still unsolved..

  • @keikosman
    @keikosman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I recommend you also check out Armata Strigoi, Danving with the Dead, Demons Are a Girl's Best Friend, Fire & Forgive, Killers with the Cross, Mochnoi Dozor, Reverent of the Rats, Sactified with Dynamite, Venom of Venus, We Drink your Blood.
They tend to use religious terminology and imagery in their songs and videos, but lately it seems to not have much of a purpose, besides continuing a trope from previous albums and videos; Beast of Gévaudan is a perfect example.

It's nice to see you so excited, Touchy! The second song was my favourite.
Thank you, Steven H!! I feel a little silly, I've heard a lot of good stuff about Powerwolf, but I've never listened to them (intentionally, at least, I'm pretty sure I've heard a track or two at a party at some point). I like the music quite a lot, but even though the lyrics are well-written, I can't really connect emotionally to the stories they tell. I can see myself falling with certain songs, though. Again: thanks and cheers!

Powerwolf is interesting. They are not my favorite band but I do enjoy their songs about werewolves and vampires being devout Catholics and fighting endless wars (or... well, it's something like that, I'm pretty sure!) They do have some absolute bangers even if the lyrics don't make sense at times. In fact, if I'm honest, the whole Powerwolf "universe" doesn't always make sense but I don't think you're supposed to read into it too much. I'm really glad you jumped on this group. I followed you for Sabaton but I got into these guys a year or two later, so it's great to see what you think of their act. Their album Sacrament of Sin sums it up nicely: they're good guys and bad guys at the same time, heroes scarred with sin. It's a feeling that resonates with their fans.

It's a part of the fun, religious wording is a perfect match with the church organ they heavily use, and fun to see the singer in priest bringing real church incense making all the crowd knee for a very funny benediction in the name of the metal ! I think I requested this band when you just started your channel.
The Beast of Gevadun is the story of a man-eating beast that terrorized the province of Gevadun in France between 1764-1767.
Victims were often killed by having their throats torn out. The kingdom of France used a considerable amount of money and manpower to hunt the Beast responsible, including the resources of several nobles, soldiers, royal huntsmen, and civilians. A study, made in 1987, showed there had been 610 attacks, resulting in 500 deaths and 49 injuries; 98 of the victims killed were partly eaten. And suddenly in 1767 the attacks just stopped. The Beast of Gevadun was gone and back then many saw it as a punishment from God. The story are interesting though.

I wouldn't say that there is not much new metal coming from the US, however, it is a fact that the symphonic and power metal scene is extremely small in the US, compared to other kinds of metal. Those genres are more popular in Europe, hence there are plenty of bands that do stuff like this. Most US metal bands tend to go the heavy route, with a lot of harsh vocals and really heavy instrumentation. And since you mentioned that you aren't into this kind of metal, it's only natural that you aren't aware of those new bands. But they do exist and the metal scene overall is on the rise again worldwide.

I could never make it beyond 5cm on the wrist because I have always had unusually huge forearm muscles so they ended up literally cutting into muscle. Got fed up with always cutting off an old one for a new one as well as taping them to all hell for sports, so I cut them all off at once and made bracelets out of them. Now I can wear them whenever I want in whatever combination or put them on my legs too, even if they look kinda finny with the silver chains for adjustment.
If anyone has similar issues, look up ways to make bracelets! It's so nice to be able to keep these mementos without being forced to keep them on at all times.

Yo need to listen to the studio version of Army of the night, the audio on the live one you watched sounds nowhere near as powerful and bombastic, specially that vocal intro! Army of the night was the first PW song I ever heard and I remember that vocal intro absolutely blasting me through the wall and I was hooked, they got me hooked within 5 seconds of the first song I ever heard

An odd song set choice. Songs like Demons are a girl's best friend, and Amen and Attack. Corleus Sanctus are a bit more rooted in what their style is.

If you see Powerwolf's logo, you'll see a reference to the Chi Rho symbol, a Christian symbol that combines the Greek letters X P. ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ or “Christos,”

I love all of these songs but I don't think sainted by the storm is the best song to start with if you want to get to know powerwolf. The ship theme is very strong in that one but doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the bands music.
