- Some of you came for a high production quality video and will be disappointed. But shooting the URGI out to 616 with 62gr OTM was quite nice.

At 16:00 the reason people say that 69 grain otms arent "lethal" or as "effective" as some other loadings is because it doesn't meet the FBI's minimum ballistics gel penetration requirement of 12". Would it still fuck someones day up? Absolutely. But because of that reason I stay away from the midweight OTMs.
That's interesting and I didn't know that. Maybe it's in that sweet spot of slow and not quite heavy enough.
IMI ammo is probably inconsistent due to the extra processing step. They have to have a rabbi circumcise every bullet, and at that high a production quantity that’s a lot of different rabbis performing circumcisions. Hence the irregularities.

I want buffalo-bore to make a 55gr 5.56 but if you shoot it out of a 20 inch the velocity might tear the fabric of spacetime.
M855 seems to really depend on the manufacturer when it comes to performance. I have some M855 Russian/Eastern European rounds from the 90's that are downright wicked. They're steel cased, but very good polymer coating, and both the primer and bullet are sealed. The Australian M855 is also pretty good, it absolutely destroys steel targets, with the only catch being it's about the smelliest ammo on earth, it STANKS but so worth it 😅
Some of those foreign powders are made of horrible things. The smell like a homeless man fell into a sewer then came out of it in a elephant exhibit.

Where you talk about 16” barrel being better for the cheap rounds than 14.5 is why I say 16 inch is the best all around barrel length.
You get the best bang for your buck on ballistics. The law of diminishing returns for barrel length shows up after going PAST 16 inches. To get the improvement that 16 is over 14.5, you almost have to go to 20 inches.
The 14.5 wasn’t picked for ballistics, it was pick for ease of using certain attachments. The M4 wasn’t thoroughly tested because it was never meant to be a standard issue. It was a spec ops gun first and then found it’s way to replacing the M16. Not saying it’s not reliable, it’s just time to re assess the cartridge and barrel length.
Mid length is also where the wear and tear from the gas system starts to really let off on beating up your internals if I am not mistaken. (Let me know if I am wrong on that)

Thanks for the info as always, Navyman. I’ve stacked mostly m193 based mostly on muh velocity, but your make great points on 69-77 grain wt range. Not everyone has the time or money to do the T&E, so sharing a starting point of what to try for my barrels is greatly appreciated. Muh velocity doesn’t matter if wind kicks the rounds off target.
I just sold all of my high end firearms (scar 17s, Benelli m4, sam7sf, etc.) in order to stock up on ammo and get training. I’ve never bought ammo in bulk before and seeing all the fresh boxes made me feel good. Looks like i need to grab several boxes of that BH’s 77gr stuff. Thanks man! Take care

I've been trying quite a few different OTM rounds 62, 68, 69, 77gr projectiles. One of my 16" barrels likes 69 better than 77gr. The IMI 55gr I never fool with, but the 77gr Razorcore has been working okay for me in several barrels, all 16" or 18". None of the issues you mentioned, but all my rifles have adj gas block and tuned pretty decently on the gas side. I've always assumed the 55gr IMI is just riding the coattails of 77gr IMI and never bother trying it.
I'll give another thumbs up for Ridgeline Defense's Scoped Carbine 2-day course. We got to shoot in plenty of wind, and got lots of excellent ideas on max point blank zero, wind holds, and knowing/using your reticle. Also got to shoot movers, which kicked my arse all over the place.
One of the other shooters at the Ridgeline class was using the Palmetto / AAC 77gr OTM with great results.
Muy bueno on the barrel length & fear of longer distances callouts. People should stretch to 200, 300, more if they can, just to know what their rifle and ammo does out there, versus at 50 to 100 yds. May as well fire blanks if you don't know where it's landing out past 100. How many folks have taken their standard AR that does 3-4 MOA at 100, and tried to hit 12" steel at 300 -- and had nothing but misses, same ammo & same rifle?

Couldn’t agree more. I’m running 62g Winchester through my setup for the time being to make sure it’s 100% and once my sb2 is out of jail. I’ll be going to the best quality,reliability and performing round for it.
I used MK262 while overseas and I loved it. I really only use that, MK318, and 193. But since I get the 262 for free, that’s all I put in my guns.
Smart calls all around. I honestly think I'm only stocking 77gr TMK/262, MK318, and 55gr moving forward. The 77grs are always excellent and reduce the number of rounds expended to get terminal effect. Also, thanks for the work you put in for the country, man. I appreciate you.
I took a deer with MK318 MOD 0 SOST this year. It did very well. The round does have a BC of only 0.246, however, and accuracy seems to vary lot to lot from about 1.5 to 2.5moa.@@navyman8903

When they came out with the Frontier line of Lake City manufactured rounds with Hornady bullets, it was really affordable in bulk pre-pandemic. There was a narrow window of time that you could get the heavier 68 and 75 grain otm flavors of that for a great price and stack it deep. I found sub moa in my 1:7 barrel rifles and excellent effects on coyotes which is how I test terminal soft tissue effects in practice. The 75 grain Frontier otm gets a rating of recommended if you have 1:7 twist 👍
I've shot sooooo many its unreal. But I've surprisingly found the Hornady Frontier 75gr shoot really well and very reasonably priced. Ive been stocking up on em. For the price and plenty good enough accuracy its a win imo. Im finding 13.99/box prices on ammo seek and have been as accurate for me as rounds double the price

I've had very good luck with 70gr TSX loaded nuclear hot out of SBR type stuff. It typically shoots 1.5-2moa 10-shot groups, expands to double caliber diameter rapidly and violently, will punch barriers, and penetrates like crazy (may not be a good thing depending, but for me, G2G). The BC is in the 0.31 range for G1, and this allows it to retain some energy and buck wind better than any other 5.56 round that is barrier blind except for the M855A1 stuff, which I've found to be a bit erratic regarding accuracy. It works across a room, or across a ravine (as well as 5.56 can outside of its reliable expansion velocity envelope).
I tend to keep the Navy Seal Certified™ wolf steel cased ammo lying around its the only thing that is able to assist me in the nightly routine of keeping the howlers at bay.
Also, AAC ( PSA ) is now making 77gr for $0.55 /rd. Its the black box without the sierra markings. The SD has been pretty good. It has been pretty consistent.
That sounds like an in house bullet not a Sierra bullet. I would be careful with that IMO. But let me know how it runs over time.
Partners fall out get into trigger and deadlines gun. Bullet depths different. I bought 500rds and over 200 were out of spec and two dozen primers falling out. I was hoping, but won't be buying these again. Similar to Hornady cheaper line frontier. They had issues with primers in the beginning, not sure anymore as I don't buy it. When a simple primers deadlines your gun and gotta remove triggers, not for me
Hornady Black 75gr has been my go to in nearly every rifle I got. Speer Gold Dot 62, 69 and 75grs. Black has been more consistent and better accuracy then any ammo I've tried including MK262
I feel like that ammo (I have some) performs subpar compared to IMI RazorCore, but it isn't terrible. I've had no issues so far with it from a function standpoint. Very similar performance to the accuracy shown in the S&B 77gr. as seen in this video. Some groups are great, some not so much.
I literally just shot this PSA AAC 77 OTM ammo out of my 18” mock 12 and had several blown primers. Rifle is ok but I wondered what happened until I figured out what was going on. It shot ok out 500 yards but it was more of a 2 MOA load on this set up.
Man you should really try put the RIP ammo and the Hotnady Zombie-max loads. At 15 yards at my local range I was making dinner plate sized groups consistently
The problem with having different loadings in different rigs is some ammo May have different point of impact and therefore I gotta be wary about which loading I zero for. I’ve settled for 55gr for “CQB” 0-200 yards plinking. Match 77gr is for 400 yards & beyond. I’ve shot 69 grain out to 700 yards (no wind) but it’s difficult to buy bulk at an affordable price and load availability.
I keep gold dot 62g in all my rifles here on the ranch. Absolutely pulverizes coyotes and large feral hogs. For shtf stacking I've always stuck with IMI M193 & 77g Razer core. If your buddy was using the imi M193 out of the 30rd packs then IT'S A BAD BATCH! their 2 most recent lots are causing major issues with accuracy. I can take a lot from 1 year ago and get 1.25moa while the last two lots I'm lucky to get 3.5moa.
I live in a state where finding anything other than (X)M193 or (X)M855 is next to impossible. I do stockpile 55gr for training. I have a decent stockpile of M855 cause why not? Never know when you’re gonna have to vibe check the home intruder that has armor with your 20” M16A2 clone. I lucked out big time and became friends with my local gunsmith/ffl and he’s been willing to special order me some gucci rounds. Even still my options are somewhat limited. Best two available to me at the moment (for most of my builds) is Hornady Black 75gr and Hornady Super performance match 75gr bthp. I could stockpile both and designate different rounds for different rifles but I like the idea of having one round that a bunch of my rifles are zeroed for. In an ideal world I’d have stockpiles of a bunch of different rounds tailored perfectly to each build but such is life.
I keep it simple and stick to XM193 and 77gr OTM. My home defense super duty 11.5” is loaded with black hills 77gr and I keep 10 mags loaded with the stuff for “emergencies”. I haven’t had any issues with IMI 77gr and I’ve ran thousands of rounds of it through my 11.5”, 14.5”, and 18” AR’s. But mine is the older IMI 77gr in the brown box and not the newer stuff marked Razorcore. I bought a ton of the stuff back in 2018. Not saying what I do is right, it’s just what I do.
Smart plan and you've had better luck than I have. But I have used the color box not the brown box.
From my bone stock FN-15A4 upper I am disappointed in groupings I have produced from M855 and M193, about 3 to 4 MOA at 100 yards. However Blackhills Mk262 delivers about 1.5 MOA at 100 yards. That’s about the same result I get from FGMM 77 grain loading shot from my match conditioned A4 I use for US Service Rifle Competition. That rifle is always sub MOA from 53, 77, and 80 grain handloads shooting as issued irons. So, my thought on it all is just learn to load match grade ammo and feed it to a match conditioned rifle. All other ideas on it just don’t deliver desired results.
Gotta throw in the black hills 50gr TSX. It's a CQB round that's also great in short barrels. Not the best option past 200 yards, but it will frag a bad guy out of a short barrel and penetrate armor better than FMJ. Does 3200 FPS out of a 16 in barrel.
Rifle barrels are as individual as eyes. Ammo recommendations only go so far as getting you into the ball park, it's up to the shooter to put into the time and find out what brings your personal rifles capabilities into focus.

I am impressed with some .223 varmint & frangible ammo for home defense from some ballistic gel tests done on TH-cam. Do you think 5.56 varmint Federal ammo will perform the same as .223 using a 16 in & 1:7 twist?
What's the grain weight? The barrel length is good, just depends on if your barrel likes it.
Buy it cheap stack it deep that's why I got the m193 😂. I like velocity. So 55gr is good. For 99% of the time I'm at the range and good cheap ammo is where it's at for me. If I ever have to do real "work" if you will, I think the 50 or 55gr vmax or Hornady tap urban should get the job done wonderfully. I'll keep some on hand for a bad day. I love how many options there are for 556 these days, can find something for just about any application. Ex took a couple deer with 70gr solid copper Barnes tsx.
Those Barnes rounds are something special.
M855a1 (still have 23 mags worth…need to make some videos with it) 64gr Gold Dot, 77gr & 75gr OTM and lots of PMC’s m855 offering (shot 5k of it in the last several months without issue). It’s my plinking ammo.
I don't know if you have done any research on the TUI round from Fort Scott munitions, but they are great on target. The 70gr and 62gr are my choice for duty rounds. I am going to start handloading it in the future.

What are your thoughts on the Sig Spear and what are you seeing with the M17/M18 that's been in service. I thought you said a while ago that they were breaking.
If I have at mk18 (10 inch) I would go 77 grain. I love my 20 inch barrels so 55 grain is fine. But 77 grain is the best for everything. I pick up m855 because it's the same cost as 55 grain a lot. But 55 grain is fine out of a 20 inch. 1:7 loves 77. 1:9 loves 55 grain. Whatever you can afford more of.... get that

The twist thing has been debunked when it comes to 55 vs 62 grain and accuracy....now your other factors may come into play but don't worry about 1/7 and 55 grain..it's fine in general

Where do I get 77gr tmk? Even black hills 77gr otm can be really hard to find and extraordinarily expensive. Im willing to spend the coin on some tho soon. Im working a lot of overtime at the shop in the next several months with the goal of buying a nightforce atacr 1-8, a criterion barrel, and some gucci ammo.
I have always actually gotten the BEST accuracy out of 69gr tho. I just always heard 77gr is good for uh...hunting.
What do you think about Norma 62 grain? I have some and it says MFD by Ruag on the box.
I'm chilling with Hornady Frontier m193 55gr out of my 20. A little over an inch groups.
I can't say I'd discourage use of M855A1 as a general-use round given it's been shown to fragment reliably at very low velocities (sub 1900 IIRC), is pretty accurate for a non-match round and exhibits good barrier penetration. Only problems it has are availability, cost and whether it'd be allowed at your range.
Those three things you said at the end, coupled with reliable sourcing.
My issue with it has been accuracy. I averaged roughly 3.55moa from a known 1moa gun with it, which mirrors testing in fixed barrels. I know some of the early stuff was bang-on, but after the test runs and so forth it seems to just be about like a decent lot of M855.

This is my first time sounding off on one of your videos. I am a retired ASAF Combat Controller. You know, the USAF version of a Navy Seal. Now that we are on that page allow me to enlighten you about the capabilities and limitations of 5.56 x 45 mm NATO ammo. M193 will only reliably produce a tango down out to about 500 yards out of a 20 inch barrel (M16 platform). Out of the M4 platform cut that kill range down to 350 yards. You and I both know that the M4 has a 14.5 inch barrel. I'm not even going to get into the ballistic charts that prove the 20 inch barrel is the sweet spot for 5.56. Your viewers can look that shit up. From a 16 inch barrel expect an effective kill range of about 400 to 425 yards. For half of my AFSOC career I carried the M16 until I was forced to carry the M4. I currently own one AR 15 rifle with a 16 inch barrel so I have had the opportunity to compare all three barrel lengths to see what effect they have on a given target. I have also tested various types of 5.56 ammo through various barrel lengths. After all I have tested I have this to say. 55 grain FMJ 5.56 x 46 mm ball ammo is all anybody who owns a legal length AR 15 will ever need if they understand the capabilities and limitations of this wonderful rifle caliber.
Did you know that up until just recently, TON618 was the largest black hole known to humans, with a mass of 66 Billions times that of our sun. Phoenix A* however was just discovered and was found to be over 100 billion times our suns mass making it just about 1.5 times TON618.
None of this really matters now though because both the mass of TON618, and Phoenix A*, pale in comparison to the amount of bullfuck that just came out of your mouth…

Omg the best 100yd group of my life was was with the imi razor core. I was slightly worse with black hills maybe 1/4”. Granted I was indoors with a dot and 3x magnifier.

Buffman range did a chrono (on a cold day) on the S&B 77gr it was a bit slow out of a 20”. I still got a few in the stash though.

My HKMR556 likes 62, 68, 77gr, about 1 moa. Even with fairly cheap PMC 62gr. with 55s, it groups around 1.5-2 moa. my 18" Ruger is more accurate with 55gr than my HK. It really likes PMC and S&B 55s. I really noticed I struggle a little more with shooting 55gr past about 350 meters. When I step up to 62, it is much better. the extra 7 grains do make a difference. Also, just because it's 55 grain, it means it's full power. M193 Most of my stock is 55 just because it's what I bought a few years ago. I really want to stock some more premium heavier grain ammo.
My MR556 also turns out excellent groups no matter what I fire out of it. But not all barrels are that good.
@@navyman8903 Seems like that "eats anything with good accuracy/precision" quality is rare in a barrel generally, and can be rare even when you pay a lot of $$ for a good one. It seems as if it's the same as with the ammo you reviewed above, three tiers, and each step up increases the utility across the spectrum. Not talking rimfire here, where ammo/barrel can be picky to a ridiculous degree.
@seanoneil277 I mean there is a difference in the groups. The top tier stuff gets .65-.75 MOA all day long. Where the other ammo is .90-1MOA. So the MR556 barrel does impressive things, but the better the ammo the more impressive. With the caveat that the barrel is bare steel, not Chrome Lined.
@@navyman8903 From what I've seen (...heard, read,... ) it's tough to find chrome lined barrels that will fire small groups at 400+. Some of FN's better products might be the best I know of, and that's just others' opinions I'm restating. I had to learn a bit about chrome plating when I was younger. It's very tough to do on curved surfaces and keep the depth/thickness uniform. Tubes, whether external or internal, are the toughest with curved tubes being worst. Gravity fights the deposition process, making it run downslope. In the early 90s when I had to learn this crap, the best places in the USA for chromium plating were in Chicago and Detroit regions, outgrowths of auto industry mostly. It's a lost art among the blue collar labor craftsman sectors. Companies with longevity in the field tend to have their stuff dialed. So, FN.
Well I have a 16" 1-9 twist barrel and with indoor ranges in my area I'm a 55 grain type of guy

You give 1 barrel ammo that you keyhole with at 100 yards, then to another barrel and its above 1 moa.
Then give another ammo to that above 1 moa and its amazing, then shift it to first barrel and 2 moa you get 😂

me personally I am a fan of 5.56 I would like to get my hands on some of that 90grain 100grain or 112 grain.223/5.56 with my 15.1" barreled AR, but I hear it has AR-15 mag fitment issues, but dont know for sure, and really for the most part, I don't really care what weight it is, long as it is 55grain and up, and preferably soft point, or ballistic tip is my preferred, but being a poor, I buy what I can afford. which is usually M193 or M855 till I get set up to load my own.
Those bullet weights in this caliber are pure gimmick, ripoff material and completely defeat the purpose of design surrounding the 5.56 cartridge. 5.56 gets it's lethality from very high pressure, high velocity design which causes hydrostatic shock during terminal ballistics. 77g is absolutely the highest weight bullet that should be used and even then the terminal ballistics from 77g hardly compares to legitimate bonded softpoints or all copper bthp. The distance or "neck" from the heavier bullets is anywhere from 3 to 6 times as long as bonded softpoints, bthp and even M193 meaning that the round takes more time to open up and start causing tissue damage. The 77g does well in wind but if you were to push a cartridge any further in bullet weight then you would be severely suffering from terminal ballistics and weak powder charge due to the large size of the bullet. If you absolutely MUST use a heavier cartridge then don't do it with 5.56, just move on to a heavier caliber.
@@TerminalM193 Back some years ago at Ky State Long Range Championship I shot a 384 X 6 with my match conditioned iron sight Service Rifle. I shot 80 grain Berger bullets. Another guy shot a 384 X 9, shooting 90 grain bullets, winning in Service Rifle Division. I think he had a 1/6.5 twist barrel. At any rate, your post made me recall that event, which, at that time, I was unaware that a 90 grain bullet was even out there.

The 77gr tmk will optimize the performance of whatever rifle you shoot it out of. So the best an 11.5 can possibly perform will be with the TMKs.

I keep it simple. M193 and mk262. I would totally go mk318 but i cant ever get any. And i constantly test and try new things. But i am not changing all the time. Everything needs vetted.

While my carriers are full off a1 sauce, it's too costly on my end to really test it a bunch. I do know out of a 20 inch barrel it will go through a cheap Walmart plate at 50 yards.
I've got about a 5 gallon bucket full of lake city brass I need to do something with, and not turn it into blackout.

The 20" does turn everything into duty ammo. Possibly even A1 sauce.
Im really thinking about getting a bunch of the 77gr OTM/MK262 clones and see how the groups compare between the cheap stuff and the real deal
With a mid to high end barrel the difference at 100 yards is near identical... Just stay away from clones that aren't made to milspec standards, "bullet canalure, sealed primer & bullet" for defensive purposes. Right at 300 yards is when the noticeable difference begin BUT the difference is still negligible. Black hills is EXTREMELY overpriced and really only begin to shine at 500 yards when directly compared to it's closest competitors.
What would you recommend for a 16 " barrel with a 1-9 twist? To get the best possible accuracy out of my rifle.
I would stick in the 60s somewhere. 62gr up to about 68-69 gr.
@@navyman8903 I have tried 62 grain before but never anything heavier. I've had a hard time finding anything other than 45- 55 grain. I live in a small town and there's not many gun stores around at all. And so far I've only been able to shoot my rifle out to between 250-300 yards simply because I'm in the Appalachian mountains and it's hard to find a place to really stretch it out. With the ammo I have on average I'm getting between 1.25-1.75 moa, I've always been told that matching your barrel twist rate to bullet weight is very important I haven't really be able to test out that theory very much and I'm just trying to find some ammo that might tighten my groups up a little better than what I shoot now, I had some 50 grain ammo that shot pretty consistent out to about 150-200 But I just put an LPVO on layaway today so I plan on trying it out at further distances when I get it payed off. I'll for sure try to get some heaver weight bullets to see how well they work. Thanks!
@bradslone2409 you might be able to find some OTM 55gr on SGA ammo or another online retailer. The struggle is real with the small town gun shops sometimes. Supply chain can be a gift or a curse.
@@navyman8903 It really is a blessing and a curse living out in the country. The closest big city where a Buds gun shop and a bunch of other bigger places is Lexington KY about 150 miles from me. But I do love living out in a small town city life ain't for me at all.
What yardage were those groups shot at with the s&b otm?
100 yards. Best ones were 1.15" and the smiley faces were both 1.25" at 100 yards.
@navyman8903 have you had any experience with the aac 77gr otm or the aac 77gr Sierra match king bthp?and if you know whats the difference betwween the two?

62 grain bonded Soft Point, solid copper tsx,gmx, controlled chaos for us civvies since we don't have cases of mk318, 70 grain brown tip or m855A1..50/55/62/70 are the only weights for solid copper I've seen
For people who don't have browntip, the AAC loaded 70gr TSX round is a decent approximation. As for MK318 MOD 0 and 1 SOST, those were available. M855A1 is available, but less so.
Be aware of these newer lots of federal and Winchester etc etc. Or newer roll outs of new manufacturers are short loading their rounds for liability reasons....like cutting up to 100 fps out of the muzzle which can totally fkk up your optic settings and or terminal ballistics if you have a shorter barrel,even more so

I personally believe, for the average basement larper, M193 and M855 is going to be the ammo of choice for the majority of people. That's what's on the shelves. That's typically what people stack deep. If one carbine is a 2 MOA carbine with M193 and another is 4 MOA with the same ammo, guess what? I have one 2 MOA and one 4 MOA carbine. I don't buy specific ammo for specific carbines. If I had f**k you money, this would be a different comment.

It is good stuff. Their 75gr bullets make nice groups.
I’m honestly disappointed by current 5.56 NATO offerings. The bullet selection is limited and the only expanding offerings I’ve seen is Hornady black 75gr interlock and barnes 70gr. There’s a lot of room on the market but no one sees to be taking it. That extra weight/length in bullet is quite important for terminal effects.

Xtac 855 has surprised me in a good way.
I also get really good accuracy from the xtac 62...not the 55 tho. I stock up on the 62 every gun I have shoots it well....none of them shoot the Winchester 62 worth a crap tho

With me, I just subscribe to literally every website that sells ammo, and then I get hundreds of e-mail or SMS deals, and I'll get cheap ass 5.56 or .223, (doesn't matter to me, if it goes bang it's okay.) Usually I also compare the prices to AmmoSeeks app, too. With me, I'm not trained, so if SHTF I'ma be defensive, and most likely only engaging aggressors at sub 200m, so I don't need expensive, high-grade ammo. It would be wasted on me and I know my lane.
*Edit after watching further into the video: Groupings are irrelevant to me. An AR-15 isn't necessarily a precision rifle, and even if I were to make mine out to be, I am not a designated marksman so I'd be handicapping the rifle. You give me any FMJ, SP or HP ammunition that is between 55g to 77g in .223 or 5.56 and I guarantee you, 100% I will consistently get combat levels of accuracy on a man sized target within 50-200y. I won't be very accurate, but I'll still hit it. And ultimately, aggression x rounds down range are more effective for someone who isn't trained. Now, if I get trained, (eventually) I can work through and overcome handicaps, (like poorer quality ammo) so either way, it works out in the wash.
