  • We found some 100 year old cast iron skillets at auction and got them for $5 each! Today we transform the iron from old to new buy soaking in Coca Cola and Vinegar, then we grind the old off, and wash before baking on new seasoning. We also pass on our indian runner ducklings to some new owners. Thanks for watching and God Bless!

Ransom is a wise young man for choosing the cast iron pans for they will last his lifetime and longer if they are taken care of properly. You have to be careful when using Crisco for if the pan gets too hot it will become sticky for the vegetable-based Crisco burns at a lower temperature. I have several cast iron pans that I use and have found lard and bacon grease are good for seasoning them. After frying bacon let the grease cool and then wipe it out with a towel. If needed I just run hot water over it to rinse and immediately towel dry. Thanks for sharing this video. Ransom really worked hard on his pan and didn't give up. You are teaching him well.

I love restoring cast iron. I do it in my oven on various temperature settings over a few days with pretty much just oil and oven. I never grind of scrape my cast iron. But the memories y'all are making is what counts the most. You're a wonderful family. I love watching you all.

Melt your sugar in just a little very hot water before adding to your sun or any iced tea . Works great. My Mom always ‘burned’ her cast iron every year in a very hot fire for 30 minutes or more and ‘seasoned’ them after being washed, with lard or crisco. I am 73 years old and continue in her footsteps! lol. God bless y’all

God bless y'all great job on cleaning on the cast iron frying pans I have a suggestion for y'all this is how I was taught by my grandfather he would get some good sand and a burlap sack you would wet the burlap sack put the sand inside the pan begin scrubbing in circular motion the sand would cut the rust and give it bottom inside smooth then you would rinse then put it in the fire or the oven set to the highest setting for a hour when you take it out of the heat he would salt and lard with another burlap sack and rub it down let them sit and cool down then wipe them out and rub them good put them in the fire or oven set to highest setting we only use lard and salt rinse with hot water then dry real good and rub them good with lard hope this helps y'all God bless y'all keep doing what y'all do just saying 😎..

Yes, I remember Ransom picking the truly rusty skillet at the auction. "Becky" at the Hillbilly Kitchen channel as an affinity for her cast iron skillets plus a number of 100 year old recipies. The advantage of 100 year old recipies is that they came to be on wood stoves under oil (or other) light and in cast iron. They aren't particularly fussy in terms of prep tools/ equipment, ingredients, nor cooking techniques. Others have 100 year old recipies too. When the temperatures cool down again, it sure would be good to see if Ransom would be interested to do the measuring and mixing for some of these older recipies that are actually designed for cast iron cooking.

Benjamin the spoiled bottle baby. He's lucky, most bottle lambs are weaned when they're 30-45 days old or 25 lbs. He'll just put on a little weight. But he is a cutie. If you keep handling him and giving him attention, he'll be more likely to be docile. Majority of our rams were, but once in a while we'd get one with a bad attitude and he'd be the first one on the trailer to market.

I had had a huge moving sale and they werent for sale but, I had a former brother in law that was taking things to sell for me and was supposed to give me the money. I never saw a single penny and once I unpacked here, I missed the skillets. I cannot prove it but........

You did a fantastic job on recovering old cast iron pans. I love cooking with cast iron. When you wash cast iron pans, always dry them immediately with a papertowel. I have a complete set that I have bought at antique shopes, antique shows, some are grandparents. I only looked for Griswold. They are late 1800's to early 1900's. I have a few lodge pieces that are modern, but unusual pieces that i like to use. I used SOS when i cleaned mine.

The best way to clean the old cast iron to it's origninal condition is by ELECTROLYSIS.....it would be awesome if you could give your kids a step by step clinic on how to set up a small electrolysis tub to clean any rusted item to it's original condition. I'm certain some of your subscribers and thousands of others would love to tune into your channel to view a classroom type instructional on how to set up this simple method of repairing rusted items to their original condition WITHOUT any grinding or power tools. No scrubbing, sandpaper, grinding, wire brushes, acid or chemicals needed with Electrolysis. Be careful using a fire with cast iron or steel items like big trap handles, you can warp or crack the cast iron items, or take the temper out of the trap springs to the point they are ruined.

I have a smooth cast iron skillet it is Griswold from Erie Pennsylvania it also has a NO 6 on the bottom it is 8 inches across the bottom. My newer Lodge cast iron are rough on the bottom. I like my Griswold is my favorite but another reason it's my favorite is that my friend gave it to me because of her disabilities making heavy pans hard for her to lift. Good job Ransom and Gary.

I have to ask about the skillet you commented on that had a M on it....could that be a W? The reason I ask is because I was told the Wagner cast iron is the most expensive.

Great job Ransom. The pans are looking good and will last forever! The new man wont let the old rust hold him back he will follow Jesus perfecting his walk daily and give all the glory to the Lord. Just like those pans they will get better over time and those using those pans will enjoy all the delicious meals prepared, because you did the work it took to make them perfect.

Love watching the whole video the cast iron and the farm life. I think it's awesome how Gary takes the time to do things with Ransom as he's growing up. Great Dad you are.

The doctor told me to cook in the cast iron pans cause my mom was anemic. And she might not have to take iron pills which didn’t agree with her. So they are really beneficial. Thanks Ransom and Gary. Good work.

Cast iron is a good investment. Ransom chose well at the farm auction. Good cast iron will last for decades. If you ever travel in the direction of the Lodge company headquarters, I think Ransom would love to see their big store! 💖💖💖

In grandma's day,( in areas where they had a lot of leaves) they used to put their cast iron pans in their fall leaf piles when they burned them.❤😊

I really enjoyed the video, watching the restoration. I like my cast iron, however, I wish it wasn't so blasted heavy. The older I get, the heavier it gets and the less I use it. 🥺

i got a skillet when i got married way back in 78....mostly only use for corn bread....its only been washed once or twice in all that time....mainly because of my son tried to cook using it then i had to season again before i could use it....i either use oil or bacon grease for my bread and the bread slides right out then i just wipe it out with paper towels til next use....when my son messed it up i scrubbed with steel wool then heated with salt in it then just wiped it out

My moms (she's in her 90's now) favorite way to season castiron was to coat it inside and out with lard or shortening and put it in a fire. The biggest trouble my husband got in was when he used my castiron cornbread skillet to scramble him some eggs. Needless to say he won't do that again.

Well done Ransom on working really hard to get those cast iron pans back to be used again , they would be a great addition to the camper bus for when you finally get to go camping in it👍😊

i've never had to clean any as bad as what you have....mine only needed scrubbing after my son washed it and didn't dry right so it rusted at bit...so i'd use brillo pads and after cleaning heat on stove til very dry

My cast iron was my grandmothers(Iam 70) and I still use it often. I keep the inside oiled but the outside needs to be put in hot coals or in the oven when I set it on clean. It has lots of built-up oil on the outside but I call those memories.

I wanted to see how you did it because I have two rusted cast iron pans. I saw multiple videos that required sand paper and other methods that looked hard to do. Thanks so much for this video. Ransom is definitely a hard worker.

I’m so glad he wanted to and did restore the cast iron pans and I am pretty sure that the person who passed is happy that they found a good home and have someone to take care of them properly!😊
