Obviously, Ransom doesn’t mind a little hard work. He just seems to like being with Dad. Amazing kiddo!
Ransom is a exceptional young man. He's a hard worker, for his age.
Ransom is a wise young man for choosing the cast iron pans for they will last his lifetime and longer if they are taken care of properly. You have to be careful when using Crisco for if the pan gets too hot it will become sticky for the vegetable-based Crisco burns at a lower temperature. I have several cast iron pans that I use and have found lard and bacon grease are good for seasoning them. After frying bacon let the grease cool and then wipe it out with a towel. If needed I just run hot water over it to rinse and immediately towel dry. Thanks for sharing this video. Ransom really worked hard on his pan and didn't give up. You are teaching him well.
I must agree that lard is excellent for seasoning cast iron. 👍❤️
Maintenance is key dry on a stove, cool, then light coat of oil to store.
I love restoring cast iron. I do it in my oven on various temperature settings over a few days with pretty much just oil and oven. I never grind of scrape my cast iron. But the memories y'all are making is what counts the most. You're a wonderful family. I love watching you all.
I have done the same. With oil.
We used baking soda and vinegar. And my dad would use the something in the shop to remove some of the rust. 😊
My grandmothers used lard or suet to clean cast iron.
Homesteading with the Zimmermans has a whole video on cast iron restoring. I've seen many, but none like theirs! God bless you all and many prayers 🙏🏻 Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister ☦️ 🙏🏻 💙 ❤️
Melt your sugar in just a little very hot water before adding to your sun or any iced tea . Works great. My Mom always ‘burned’ her cast iron every year in a very hot fire for 30 minutes or more and ‘seasoned’ them after being washed, with lard or crisco. I am 73 years old and continue in her footsteps! lol. God bless y’all
Ransom is such a great kid and so blessed to have you as a dad to encourage and help him.
Ransom did a good job with your help dad
I loved this video. I think it is wonderful how you encourage and support your children. It was great to see Ransom choose the cast iron pan and stick with it to get the job of restoring it. Proud of you Ransom.
This came from my grandma, and I’m 65. Back in the pioneer years they did not have a problem with iron deficiency because they cooked with cast iron only
❤😂 COWBOY KENT ROLLINS Would be proud Ransom 😊❤🎉
We hope so 😊
Hello Walker family. Those pans will be gorgeous and food will taste amazing in them .
Gary and Ransom, watch Cowboy Kent Rollins on the best restoration of old rusty cast iron skillets.
Gary, true test of your labor, cook eggs in it. If done enough & correctly, the eggs shouldn't stick. Way to go Ransome!
I'm impressed with Ransom for wanting to restore the old pan, and you for helping him with his goal! Also, thank you for the Jesus reference; taking something old and making it new again!
You all done a great job ,Ramson your learning well and not afraid of hard work most would not have gotten to the end🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊gold star for you (and dad).
Cleaning up those cast iron pans will be so worth it when you see all the stuff you can cook and bake in them. You can bake a mess of biscuts, dump them on a plate to cool, then whip up some tasty sausage gravy to top them. Oh yum!
My dad worked for the forestry service. He used to use Coke on the battery cables of the power wagon when they got all corroded and he couldn’t get them off. When we go camping, my job was to take the iron skillets down to the river and clean them out with sand..
Wow!!! Look at those pans. If you showed people who passed on those at the auction, they'd be fighting you for them Ransom. And you know another good thing Ransom you can keep those pans your whole life, and remember how you and dad brought them back to life together. Can't buy that anywhere❤
My daughter asked for my cast iron when I am not using it anymore. My mother gave it to me. It is old.
How awesome 👍. . I Love cast iron. I have a found a lot of good pieces in thrift stores, yard sales , and restore them , I dont have the Teflon at all. .. looking for the iron kettle and Dutch oven. Y'all did amazing on them .. y'all have a amazing New week happy Monday stay safe stay healthy stay positive always make it fun Love from Tucson Arizona 💗🦎🌵🌻🦉👩🏼🌾🌵🦎💗
Ransom was really committed to the cast iron pan project. Good for him! So many kids his age would have given up a long time ago! Gary, what a great memory you & Ransom made cleaning those pans; I’m sure he’ll never forget it.
Great idea Ransom. Love making old things useful again. By the way. Your daddy wasn’t cheating, he was just working smarter 😀
Gary, love how you use every opportunities to teach Ransom, Ranger and Mazzie about God and life stills. Ransom, you are a hard worker and you don't give up easily. Wonderful!!! ❤❤
I just love Ransoms heart. Such a hard worker and I love how he watches his dad.
Ransom, you are a wonderful young man. You do not shy away from work or playing hard. That was beautiful all the work you did in cleaning those pans. I love your heart to do all that you can to help on the farm. Great teaching about CHRIST!
Ransom has found two Treasures. Ransom can have two pans that he can keep all his life, and gave them to his children. God bless you ransom for saving old pans that could probably last at least another hundred years
Poppa, proof you for encouraging Ransom & making this wonderful Father & Son activity Great.
Also, tying it into how God sees us in Christ.
❤🎉😊❤🎉
Love ya all.
God bless y'all great job on cleaning on the cast iron frying pans I have a suggestion for y'all this is how I was taught by my grandfather he would get some good sand and a burlap sack you would wet the burlap sack put the sand inside the pan begin scrubbing in circular motion the sand would cut the rust and give it bottom inside smooth then you would rinse then put it in the fire or the oven set to the highest setting for a hour when you take it out of the heat he would salt and lard with another burlap sack and rub it down let them sit and cool down then wipe them out and rub them good put them in the fire or oven set to highest setting we only use lard and salt rinse with hot water then dry real good and rub them good with lard hope this helps y'all God bless y'all keep doing what y'all do just saying 😎..
You can also use Arm & Hamme Baking Soda, and for small pots the packaged catsup from take-outs works for stains.... Great Job, you two! The pans look terrific, yay!
Great project Gary and Ransom!!! Very interesting.👍 Love it that Ransom likes to do things like this. Definitely not afraid of hard work!!! Awesome work Ransom❣😊👍🍳💛
Such a great job with the cast iron! Love you all so much! Continued prayers! God bless
Here in Scottsdale AZ, that's how we make our tea. The best!!!❤❤❤
😅oh My Does Momma know yall out Cleaning skillets wearing your church clothes??😯😄
have to smile at people who say if coke can do that to a rusty skillet imagine what it would do to your insides…what do they think stomach acid could do
Yes, I remember Ransom picking the truly rusty skillet at the auction. "Becky" at the Hillbilly Kitchen channel as an affinity for her cast iron skillets plus a number of 100 year old recipies. The advantage of 100 year old recipies is that they came to be on wood stoves under oil (or other) light and in cast iron. They aren't particularly fussy in terms of prep tools/ equipment, ingredients, nor cooking techniques. Others have 100 year old recipies too. When the temperatures cool down again, it sure would be good to see if Ransom would be interested to do the measuring and mixing for some of these older recipies that are actually designed for cast iron cooking.
Hi guys, I really enjoy your videos. You’re awesome family. Thank you for sharing😊 them are getting to look really good
Benjamin the spoiled bottle baby. He's lucky, most bottle lambs are weaned when they're 30-45 days old or 25 lbs. He'll just put on a little weight. But he is a cutie. If you keep handling him and giving him attention, he'll be more likely to be docile. Majority of our rams were, but once in a while we'd get one with a bad attitude and he'd be the first one on the trailer to market.
I grew up with cast iron cooking, when my Dad would burn brush he would put Moms skillets and put in the red hot coals and leave until am when cooked off. They do get build up. Be sure and keep seasoned.
That's the BEST bacon is from a cast iron pan ..... AWESOME job Ransom!!!!!
My dad had 2-100 yr old cast iron skillets that I inherited. They cooked like a dream! When I moved from Dallas to Houston, they disappeared! I had had a huge moving sale and they werent for sale but, I had a former brother in law that was taking things to sell for me and was supposed to give me the money. I never saw a single penny and once I unpacked here, I missed the skillets. I cannot prove it but........
Im proud of Ransoms ingenuity and drive to restore those skillets!❤
Ransom you are working so hard to get the cast iron pan cleaned. Thank you dad for showing Ransom how to restore an item Ransom will be so proud what he did that and you don't always have to buy new. He will have a great cast iron that he will have a long time. Ransom I am so proud of you. That took a lot of work and time. Have a wonderful day. God Bless.
Ransom is a very enterprising young man and hard worker. And you Gary, are a good, patient dad. God Bless. - ACD
Also the one with “8” on it is prob the really old one. They use to have on the old ones. Newer ones don’t have. It is prob a heavier skillet. Way to go Ransom‼️
I’ve got a cast iron pan from my mom. I’ve had it for 50 some years and I’m not sure how long she had it. It’s got a build up on the bottom but still cooks great. I’m afraid to stick it in the fire but I know my mil always did hers in her wood cook stove. Yes I’m that old. I’m the lady that sent the mammoth sunflowers last year. I’m just getting mine planted this year.
👍🏼🌻
You guys are such a wonderful family. I love watching your channel.❤️❤️🙏
Loved seeing Ransom right there helping you all through restoring the cast iron. He's a little trooper. Good luck selling the shoes. Hopefully Benjamin will stay gentle. GOD bless Y'all.
I love what Ransom has done to these cast iron pans, this kid is so creative and reminded me to take good care of mine so that they don’t rust ❤ great video today, Gary once again your an amazing father ❤️
This was a. Excellent video and Ransom's attitude is so refreshing for such a young fellow.
Using a cast iron skillet to fry bacon is the best way to season a newly cleaned cast iron skillet. Don't wash for the first couple uses. Cover with foil and keep in oven.
a self cleaning oven works great for cleaning cast iron skillets, you wash them and put them in the oven and run it through the self cleaning cycle and the wash them and heat them and oil them
Great video. Hope he remember this someday total awesome young man I like to see kids outside learning how to do things instead of in the house on the video games which is restoring our young kids that young man wants to be just like his daddy❤❤❤
I know it's just me, but I think food tastes better cooked in cast iron. We have a glass top stove and instructions say not to use cast iron on it, but I do. Our cast Iron is as non stick as the new stuff you buy, love it.
I had a friend who had a sandblaster and he cleaned one my Grandmother had just seasoning not turned out to be a task took awhile to figure that out we were doing it before computers, lol.
A++ find Ransom, nothing taste better then things cooked in cast iron. Good job guys
Great job ransom!! You too dad!! Sounds like one of the pans is over 100 years old!! Wow!!
Great idea Ransom! You and your Dad did an awesome job to refresh the cast iron skillets! Betting they will come in handy for camping once the remodel and upgrades are complete in school bus! ⭐👍❤😊
What a great idea Ransom & a awesome job you both did to restore the 2 pans back to new. That 🥓🥓 sure looked yum.😋👍🏻👏🏼
Overnight in the wood stove works well!
Great day, father and son cleaning up those cast iron! I lucked out years ago a great older friend gave me a beautiful seasoned T. Eaton 10” cast iron pan! Love it for so much frying and oven cook like corn meal! Happy Days! 🍳🍳❄️🧊☀️😄👏🥰🤗🙏
Course Salt...
1 skillet is a older Lodge. The 1 with the breaks in the heat ring. And the one with the worse pitting is maybe a Birmingham Stove and Range. Couldn't tell from the quick glimpse I could see. But both should cook good.
I too restore cast iron cookware. I love this channel, but this video about killed me.
It’s an everything not to do to restore vintage cast iron.
Years ago i spent a summer living with my dad on a jobsite. He had bought a few pans from the local thrift store (so mom could keep hers at home), and one was very rusted. Every time I cleaned it i scrubbed more rust off.then one day as I was cooking stuff was leaking into the stove. I had scrubbed all the way through-it was rusted all the way through.
I don't see you cheating, I see you working smarter not harder.
Ransom ricks! Neatest kid EVER! You and Cassie are doing great with your kids and I’m just a grandmother, but I believe the best thing you can teach or show them is Jesus. That’s why I believe you two have great kids! Love y’all a lot ! ❤ blessings from OKC.
Ransom is an amazing young man. All of your children are amazing. Ransom stands out more because he doesn't seem to mind working hard. (and playing hard)
Just FYI, it's hard, some would say impossible, to sweeten tea after iuts on ice. Next time you make Sun tea, add sugar before putting it on ice.
Love your videos and wonderful family!!
You did a fantastic job on recovering old cast iron pans. I love cooking with cast iron. When you wash cast iron pans, always dry them immediately with a papertowel. I have a complete set that I have bought at antique shopes, antique shows, some are grandparents. I only looked for Griswold. They are late 1800's to early 1900's. I have a few lodge pieces that are modern, but unusual pieces that i like to use. I used SOS when i cleaned mine.
❤ Cowboy Kent ROLLINS has CHANNEL & cast iron skillet video👍
We watched one
@@WalkerFarmFam
Please don’t restore the way he does.
Watch the videos showing how to make an electrolysis tank.
I restore professionally. Using fire and power tools ruins cast iron, and destroys their value. Also, chances are you will not get a complete polymer ization.
There are many videos that teach the proper way without harming you cast iron cookware.
Ransom , Just got to tell you that you did an awesome job of cleaning 🧽 and sanding the cast iron pans . Think you got a great bargain at the auction and done a much better job than I could ever do ! So well done 👏👏👏 you dad did okay also . 🕳 Great video as always guys . Take care and stay safe 👍
Everyone cleans old cast iron pans differently, I use Muriatic acid, 2 cups in 5 gallons of water for 4 hours, they come out looking like new shiny metal, they darken back up when I season them
If we had some that sounds great! It’s hard to get everything off
@WalkerFarmFam same stuff I use to clean traps, ask Brandon if it works, lol
Cast Iron pans are very expensive 🫰😔🫰 Good Job 👍👍👍👍 guys . Keep up the good work 👍👍❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have 24 cast iron pans, pots, skillets, and griddles, lids. And 4 minis. Mine were all handed down through generations. I season mine with lard rendered from pork belly.
Good job Ransom! Gary i could not find a m. But i did find a w and that is Wagner. Their #4 pan is size of 5 7/8". I love my cast iron pans. You guys did a good job on getting the corrosion off.
The best way to clean the old cast iron to it's origninal condition is by ELECTROLYSIS.....it would be awesome if you could give your kids a step by step clinic on how to set up a small electrolysis tub to clean any rusted item to it's original condition. I'm certain some of your subscribers and thousands of others would love to tune into your channel to view a classroom type instructional on how to set up this simple method of repairing rusted items to their original condition WITHOUT any grinding or power tools. No scrubbing, sandpaper, grinding, wire brushes, acid or chemicals needed with Electrolysis. Be careful using a fire with cast iron or steel items like big trap handles, you can warp or crack the cast iron items, or take the temper out of the trap springs to the point they are ruined.
Great job on the restoration of the cast iron pans👍👍👍 ransom is such an incredible little boy🥰
Love and enjoy watching your videos. May the lord bless and protect you and your family and the animals and restoring the cast iron
Hi Gary and Ransom, Those are really old skillets, Ransom is a hard worker. Fantastic I love cast iron!!!! Love the video God bless you all and until next time take care now.
That was really cool to watch Ransom take a rusty old pan and turn it into a usable piece of cookware. He amazes me at the things he takes interest in. One very bright little boy. God Bless & love you guys! ❤❤
When I visited one of the Boston Harbor islands, the tour guide picked some red sumac flowers and made sun tea. I wasn't brave enough to try it, bit it looked pretty good! Make sure you pick from the red sumac and not the white poisonous plant. The red spikes are what to look for.
Ranson and Gary are hard team workers. Ransom is your faithful shadow. Benjamin is adorable. Blessings 🙏🫶🙏🫶
I have a smooth cast iron skillet it is Griswold from Erie Pennsylvania it also has a NO 6 on the bottom it is 8 inches across the bottom. My newer Lodge cast iron are rough on the bottom. I like my Griswold is my favorite but another reason it's my favorite is that my friend gave it to me because of her disabilities making heavy pans hard for her to lift. Good job Ransom and Gary.
I have to ask about the skillet you commented on that had a M on it....could that be a W? The reason I ask is because I was told the Wagner cast iron is the most expensive.
Possibly
Great job Ransom. The pans are looking good and will last forever! The new man wont let the old rust hold him back he will follow Jesus perfecting his walk daily and give all the glory to the Lord. Just like those pans they will get better over time and those using those pans will enjoy all the delicious meals prepared, because you did the work it took to make them perfect.
Love watching the whole video the cast iron and the farm life. I think it's awesome how Gary takes the time to do things with Ransom as he's growing up. Great Dad you are.
The doctor told me to cook in the cast iron pans cause my mom was anemic. And she might not have to take iron pills which didn’t agree with her. So they are really beneficial. Thanks Ransom and Gary. Good work.
Great fine Ransom! Great dad to make memories!! Fine lookin cast iron!!
Nothing better than cast iron for cooking.
I really enjoyed this video. Ransom really likes doing stuff with his dad. I, too, love cast iron and love to cook in it. God bless you all ❤
Cast iron is a good investment. Ransom chose well at the farm auction. Good cast iron will last for decades. If you ever travel in the direction of the Lodge company headquarters, I think Ransom would love to see their big store! 💖💖💖
Y’all did a really good job on those pans. Ransom yours looked new so great job. Thanks for sharing.
In grandma's day,( in areas where they had a lot of leaves) they used to put their cast iron pans in their fall leaf piles when they burned them.❤😊
Good job Gary and Ransom. That was so much work, I'm happy to see you using the pans.
I really enjoyed the video, watching the restoration. I like my cast iron, however, I wish it wasn't so blasted heavy. The older I get, the heavier it gets and the less I use it. 🥺
Hello Walker Family and friends!
i got a skillet when i got married way back in 78....mostly only use for corn bread....its only been washed once or twice in all that time....mainly because of my son tried to cook using it then i had to season again before i could use it....i either use oil or bacon grease for my bread and the bread slides right out then i just wipe it out with paper towels til next use....when my son messed it up i scrubbed with steel wool then heated with salt in it then just wiped it out
My moms (she's in her 90's now) favorite way to season castiron was to coat it inside and out with lard or shortening and put it in a fire. The biggest trouble my husband got in was when he used my castiron cornbread skillet to scramble him some eggs. Needless to say he won't do that again.
Well done Ransom on working really hard to get those cast iron pans back to be used again , they would be a great addition to the camper bus for when you finally get to go camping in it👍😊
i've never had to clean any as bad as what you have....mine only needed scrubbing after my son washed it and didn't dry right so it rusted at bit...so i'd use brillo pads and after cleaning heat on stove til very dry
My cast iron was my grandmothers(Iam 70) and I still use it often. I keep the inside oiled but the outside needs to be put in hot coals or in the oven when I set it on clean. It has lots of built-up oil on the outside but I call those memories.
I wanted to see how you did it because I have two rusted cast iron pans. I saw multiple videos that required sand paper and other methods that looked hard to do. Thanks so much for this video. Ransom is definitely a hard worker.
I’m so glad he wanted to and did restore the cast iron pans and I am pretty sure that the person who passed is happy that they found a good home and have someone to take care of them properly!😊
RANSON YOU NEED TO BE VERY PROUD OF YOURSELF SON I DONT THINK ANY OTHER KID YOUR AGE THAT WOULD WANT LET A LONG RESTORE AN OLD PAN. I THINK YOU HAVE AN OLD SOLE THAT GUIDES YOU. YOUR FATHER IS A GREAT MAN FOR FOLLOWING YOUR DREAM TO RESTORE THOSE PANS. GOD BLESS WALKER FARM FAM.
