  • We found some 100 year old cast iron skillets at auction and got them for $5 each! Today we transform the iron from old to new buy soaking in Coca Cola and Vinegar, then we grind the old off, and wash before baking on new seasoning. We also pass on our indian runner ducklings to some new owners. Thanks for watching and God Bless!

Ransom is a wise young man for choosing the cast iron pans for they will last his lifetime and longer if they are taken care of properly. You have to be careful when using Crisco for if the pan gets too hot it will become sticky for the vegetable-based Crisco burns at a lower temperature. I have several cast iron pans that I use and have found lard and bacon grease are good for seasoning them. After frying bacon let the grease cool and then wipe it out with a towel. If needed I just run hot water over it to rinse and immediately towel dry. Thanks for sharing this video. Ransom really worked hard on his pan and didn't give up. You are teaching him well.

Just FYI, it's hard, some would say impossible, to sweeten tea after iuts on ice. Next time you make Sun tea, add sugar before putting it on ice.

I love restoring cast iron. I do it in my oven on various temperature settings over a few days with pretty much just oil and oven. I never grind of scrape my cast iron. But the memories y'all are making is what counts the most. You're a wonderful family. I love watching you all.

Melt your sugar in just a little very hot water before adding to your sun or any iced tea . Works great. My Mom always ‘burned’ her cast iron every year in a very hot fire for 30 minutes or more and ‘seasoned’ them after being washed, with lard or crisco. I am 73 years old and continue in her footsteps! lol. God bless y’all

Years ago i spent a summer living with my dad on a jobsite. He had bought a few pans from the local thrift store (so mom could keep hers at home), and one was very rusted. Every time I cleaned it i scrubbed more rust off.then one day as I was cooking stuff was leaking into the stove. I had scrubbed all the way through-it was rusted all the way through.

My dad had 2-100 yr old cast iron skillets that I inherited. They cooked like a dream! When I moved from Dallas to Houston, they disappeared! I had had a huge moving sale and they werent for sale but, I had a former brother in law that was taking things to sell for me and was supposed to give me the money. I never saw a single penny and once I unpacked here, I missed the skillets. I cannot prove it but........
Im proud of Ransoms ingenuity and drive to restore those skillets!❤

God bless y'all great job on cleaning on the cast iron frying pans I have a suggestion for y'all this is how I was taught by my grandfather he would get some good sand and a burlap sack you would wet the burlap sack put the sand inside the pan begin scrubbing in circular motion the sand would cut the rust and give it bottom inside smooth then you would rinse then put it in the fire or the oven set to the highest setting for a hour when you take it out of the heat he would salt and lard with another burlap sack and rub it down let them sit and cool down then wipe them out and rub them good put them in the fire or oven set to highest setting we only use lard and salt rinse with hot water then dry real good and rub them good with lard hope this helps y'all God bless y'all keep doing what y'all do just saying 😎..

Basic rule of thumb for cast iron restoring: No power tools, no sandpaper. Lye bath and electrolysis tank. For just those two pans, I'd have just bought a can of yellow top oven cleaner. Spray down heavy, seal in a trash bag and let sit for a couple days. Pull out and scrub with steel wool.
The one with the ring on the bottom (Heat ring) is a 3 notch Lodge, approx 1955-65. I am a Cast iron aficionado. My last restore was a Wagner, from approx 1935. And the smooth bottom may actually be older than the one with the heat ring.
Need to season those with oil at least 3 times, if not 4. The blotchiness on the pan means you used too much oil. on the first seasoning. Your seasoning oil has a smoke point. You need to heat to a few degrees past the smoke point, to polymerize the oils.

BTW, flax seed oil seasoning has a tendency to flake off after a while. I would recommend avocado oil, or refined sunflower oil.

I was waiting for someone to comment that really knows how to restore cast iron skillets & Dutch ovens the correct way. Lye baths, e-tanks & 50/50 vinegar for only up to 30 minutes at a time. Vinegar will pit the iron.
NEVER use power tools. Never put in fires.
Flax seed oil will flake off. I use grape seed oil.

Yes, I remember Ransom picking the truly rusty skillet at the auction. "Becky" at the Hillbilly Kitchen channel as an affinity for her cast iron skillets plus a number of 100 year old recipies. The advantage of 100 year old recipies is that they came to be on wood stoves under oil (or other) light and in cast iron. They aren't particularly fussy in terms of prep tools/ equipment, ingredients, nor cooking techniques. Others have 100 year old recipies too. When the temperatures cool down again, it sure would be good to see if Ransom would be interested to do the measuring and mixing for some of these older recipies that are actually designed for cast iron cooking.

a self cleaning oven works great for cleaning cast iron skillets, you wash them and put them in the oven and run it through the self cleaning cycle and the wash them and heat them and oil them

Nothing better than cast iron for cooking.

Everyone cleans old cast iron pans differently, I use Muriatic acid, 2 cups in 5 gallons of water for 4 hours, they come out looking like new shiny metal, they darken back up when I season them

The doctor told me to cook in the cast iron pans cause my mom was anemic. And she might not have to take iron pills which didn’t agree with her. So they are really beneficial. Thanks Ransom and Gary. Good work.

I’ve got a cast iron pan from my mom. I’ve had it for 50 some years and I’m not sure how long she had it. It’s got a build up on the bottom but still cooks great. I’m afraid to stick it in the fire but I know my mil always did hers in her wood cook stove. Yes I’m that old. I’m the lady that sent the mammoth sunflowers last year. I’m just getting mine planted this year.
