I don't need the portability and I like gaming on my 4k tv at 120hz so I went with a PC I bought pre-built with a full warranty. If I would've built it myself I would've saved $150-200 maybe, if I could find a 3090 on my own (big if). But this was an easier way to go.

Honestly, I would personally say that both devices have their strengths and weaknesses, and that it's really up to personal preferences. Laptops are much more portable and can be carried wherever you go, and are super easy to set up, but they also have less performance, they can make a ton of noise and heat when hitting their limits, and they're much less upgradable. Desktops are more difficult to set up, and you can't transport them nearly as easily, but their performance is better, and they can be upgraded easily over time. It's really a matter of, "Do you want decent settings/performance and great portability, or do you want excellent settings/performance but with the trade-off of really poor portability?"
I've been building PCs for the past 10 years, and this is the first time I'm actually pondering on the idea of shrinking and surprisingly getting more performance on doing it.
i'm in the same predicament. 10 years building PCs. and im thinking bout going smaller. i dont even game anymore sadly due to work and other projects. and i can just plug a laptop into a monitor and continue working like a normal deskop.
Same here. It means that we are now having an adult lifestyle haha I was that guy: "BRUH JUST BUILD A PC" Now I'm living in another country, travelling, having less space, renting a house, etc. Laptops are the perfect choice in my case...
I’m in a situation where as a father I don’t get to play much at home anymore. But I work 24 hr shifts as a full time firefighter/emt so I get to play at work a lot. My gaming setup needs to be portable and minimal. I’m tired of lugging my ps5 and monitor to work every 3rd day, so as soon as the new Lenovo legion 5 pro comes out I’m going to grab one. Gonna be starting out with pc gaming but I think it’ll be a good swap.
I like this video due to that fact that he is clearly telling everyone to buy the tech that suits you! Yes desktops are great for gaming and are awesome. It’s just that some people want portability with that! Buy whatever makes you happy and well satisfied!
Get outta my mind!! I just reached this conclusion yesterday when my head almost exploded trying to get the best price to performance parts to build a desktop station!!! Availability, price variations, delivery times, monitor hunting, and accessories are just too much work!!!
And it doesn't stop there. there's so much overhead stress that comes with using a built PC. ARe your parts installed perfectly, when you have an issue is it your build or is it the part itself, why am I all of a sudden having parts compatibility issues, the list keeps going
@@DivineSword1 It's the main reason I stick with consoles. I'm willing to take the hit in performance and miss out on a discounts because the piece of mind is worth it to me. That said, Game Pass takes care of the discount issue so 🤷🏻♂️
People on forums who absent mindedly just blurt out "build a PC instead" have been pissing me off for the longest time. Not everyone necessarily has space for a desktop. Not everyone has a permanent enough place to live in that they can just build a PC and not worry about shifting or traveling because of work or school for several months/years. If I wanted to build a PC I would ask in forums "how to build a PC" and not "which laptop to buy". Geez, nothing is as annoying as a dimwit smartass who thinks they have the solution to all problems known to mankind.
I bought a PC a week ago for mostly gaming and casual cryptocurrency mining. Really depends on what you want your rig to do there is no right or wrong answer. Can't mine on a laptop due to cooling restraints.
@@GazMoore if you think you are gonna play any game on a laptop for 8 hours without it being plugged in I don't know what to tell you, if you are talking about the laptop being plugged in to the wall while you are playing then yh you can play more then 8 hours straight.

Seriously , Matthew is right , portability is the biggest factor not everyone has a job in which he permanently stays at one place. People like us have to move from one place to another in months and years . That's why gaming laptops are really big deal for us.
@@seeniedk it depends with Optimus on almost 6hrs but with Optimus off like 3hrs. But I don’t play on battery, when I have on battery is for regular browsing, TH-cam etc.
I used to be a desktop fan because of lower cost but now as laptops are coming with competitive prices, it is good considering its mobility and space saving aspects.
Like what? When I travel for work I don't game. Emails, spreadsheets - my 9 y old ultrabook still does the job. And it's light while a proper gaming laptop is heavy as fuck.
Facts, i agree with you (Matthew), i use to own an GTX 1050 ti, i7 7800HQ CPU laptop, all i cared was school/work, and play lol and watch anime/movie videos. 4 years later, Now i own a i7, 11800h with RTX 3070 (Msi Gp 76). i also work/game on a benq moniter 240hz for eports. (Valorant) My life style changed a little as time passes, nonetheless i use this new msi laptop as an desktop replacement hardware. it's still acts like how my peers desktop counter parts. What my points is: I won't noticed it's an laptop when i'm using the 27 inch monitor. and when i have office meeting or school. i got a laptop ready to go. Sure i loses 10-30% of gaming/CPU tasks. For me personal, i'm greatful you and other youtubers reviews on laptop. it really does help inform me on my next by every 4 years. Plus I'm not interested in Roll Playing Games or Vr, it's not my style. i only buy when i need them for the tasks needed. FYI: i gotten myself an Bestbuy 4 years Warranty for the laptop. if anything breaks, i take it to the store and get it fixed and back by less then 2-3 weeks. i worked hard/smart for my money. taking the time to learn how to build/fix each things in my desktop hardware it's just not worth the time. I looked into everystep about laptop and desktop things to know, it's far far easier in my case just to get whatever i can when my tools breaks down. At the end of the day, this "gaming laptop/desktop" are just another tool to get the job done.
I've been saving for my first gaming pc for a while now, and have decided to go with a gaming laptop, which is double the price that I was saving for. The big difference I saw is that I can turn my laptop into a pc by connecting it with a monitor, giving me two monitors, and it can be detached, which makes it more portable than any pc.
A laptop is one unit, meaning if something mess up you have to reach the laptop manufacturer, they don't necessarily replace a faulty GPU or cpu or soldered ram but tell you that the whole motherboard have to be replaced which is essentially a new laptop. This happened to me with Asus. Good thing i had extended warrenty so the whole motherboard was replaced for free.
I feel this so much. While I don't travel as much for work as I used to because of COVID, I value the size of the laptop and the fact that you can pack it away once you're done playing just as much as it's gaming performance. I live in a condo with my family and there is simply not enough space anywhere. I don't even have a dedicated table to setup a full fledged gaming PC. Irritates me to know end whenever I talk about this laptop or that then suddenly someone (usually the single/still lives in parents house/no pair of wild 2 year olds in the house) chimes in "oh why not just build your own" and when I say its because of the space, I usually get some dismissive retort. It's like I have to surrender my gamer card to the PC master race council.
Great video, Matt! I just bought a Lenovo Legion 5. Absolutely LOVE it. It has a RYZEN 7 5800H, RTX 3060, and a 1080p 165 htz display. It’s a beast. No need for 4K. It’s an unnecessary, overpriced trap (in my opinion.) All games I’ve played on maxed out settings look incredibly sharp and detailed.
Got a Legion 5 with the same specs and I can 100% confirm that. No complaints at all. I maxed things out just to see how it runs and was pretty surprised. Not using max settings on most things tho, don’t see the point when turning them down a little gives me lots more FPS in exchange.
That is the thing: if you need a powerful, portable device, gaming laptops make sense. But if you just need a laptop to take it to work or school for light use, building a gaming pc and buying a budget ultrabook makes more sense and it would probably cost about the same and perform much better. This is assuming there is no shortage and you can buy the pc parts at normal prices of course.
Thank you man! You made me feel alot better with my buying choice. I dont have the space for a desktop set up. So a gaming laptop was the best choice and it honestly plays great. Keep doing what you do 🙂👍
Considering the extreme difficulty of buying a good graphics card at MSRP I think it makes sense right now to buy either a pre-built desktop or laptop. The retailers do not mind selling to bots, scalpers and miners, they are making lots of sales and profits and are perfectly happy. But it used to be the case that you could save lots of money doing your own upgrades and PC building. Hopefully this will improve someday soon for amateur PC builders.
I agree with this video, and im glad to find a video that expressed my sentiments exactly. I currently have a desktop from 2014, with an i7 4920K cpu and an R9 290X. Wanted to replace it but cant, so decided to go with the new GE66 Raider 3080 w/ 16GB Vram and 32 GB Ram. It blows my old desktop away, and I can have it _now_ not in a year or two.
Great video! So true. Everyone just keeps boasting about desktops and during these times of scarcity laptops makes even more sense. One of the most amazing point that you raised was if something goes bad, you have to deal with just the manufacturer and not the part manufacturer.
@Kaustubh Vaidya bhai if you really need Laptop, if you work more outside, go for it . If you're working or studying at home then pc is recommended because charging , battery wear tear , in sab ka jhanjat nahi Retha .and you would work for log hours without any noticeable heating issue . (Provided you've good cpu cooler). Mai tho bolta hu abhi pc leke sasta GPU laga de . Badmai naya GPU laga lena . Nahi tho jo mil raha hai vo bhi out of Stock ho jayega .
I always preferred building my own PC's because of said extensibility but the older I get the more I enjoy simplicity (laptops don't have all these cables, etc.). My next computer will definitely be a laptop.
Another thing people do not realize is that after some time, when you want that new incredible GPU for an upgrade, probably your "old processor" will become a bottleneck, than you will have to change it. If the new processor has a different socket than your old Motherboard, you will have to change the motherboard too. And all that without thinking that you could do a mistake when assembling the parts, what could lead to more costs.
but that could also be not the case. like you can upgrade from Ryzen 2000..3000 to 5000 no problem most of the time. Intel sockets also didn't seem to change more than like once 3..5 years, but I may be inaccurate. whereas with laptop - you can just buy a whole new thing, no cpu/gpu swap.
@@AntonBlaschuk You are right! And I forgot to mention that for PC even with those upgrades you can actually upgrade at least your Graphic Card and change for AMD or NVidia. In the laptops Graphic cards comes integrated in the motherboard so you need to buy a new laptop if you want to upgrade either Graphics card or Processor.
That's the wrong reason to buy a gaming laptop. Their battery life is abysmal unless using a non discrete GPU. 1-3 hours max. Plus when gaming on a gaming laptop best practice is to keep it plugged in for best performance.
@@cybercery5271 Which is why it's the wrong reason to buy a gaming laptop. Something I was pointing out. If you weren't going to use your Gaming laptop for gaming might as well buy a regular business laptop.
Sorry, wtf? if you want to play at 1080p WITH DLSS AND RTX OFF, you can buy a laptop for half this price and you're still golden. This is a marketing video, nothing more.
When I had nothing but time on my hands, I used to LOVE to buy parts and build my own PC for gaming. Then I had kids. I bought a Series X to take care of the gaming. I may end up buying a Series S and another screen just so that we have a second machine in the house. Still cheaper than piecing together a PC, or buying a pre-built PC, or gaming laptop. @@ChillYeti For real man. Right now I have a list with all the PC parts I would want. The website also checks the cheapest vendors. If I order it, I will be +-€2400 lighter. Crazy times we're living in.
Might want to follow-up with extra data. Steam hardware data etc all show the average gamer does not use 4k and does not have a 3080. In that realm, there is even less of a difference in performance.
Gaming laptops aren't even bad anymore. You're still paying a premium for the portability but in most cases now you're gonna get a well engineered product that runs well and doesn't overheat and isn't absolutely massive, which wasn't the case a few years ago. And considering the GPU market right now the price difference between buying a gaming laptop and building a desktop is a lot less than it was a couple years ago unless you get lucky finding a GPU.
As a person who likes to travels a lot and likes to work outside, a powerful gaming laptop is the better choice. Gaming PCs nowadays mostly are for kids that don't have to travel or work outside, and the only thing they do is play video genes in their basement.
i would rather say laptops are for kids.. for school and everything else.. and people who travel a lot.. while everyone else who work without much travel usualy have just a desktop.. so saying its for kids is just wrong
First off great video. For me being on a deployment, I've had plenty of time to research my next PC build, but like everyone else the on-going lack of GPUs is a huge issue. So I started looking into Gaming Laptop Battlesations and I must say it's very enticing. I added up all my parts for both setups and the laptop version comes out $300 dollars cheaper at $3756 before taxes. I've done extensive research and the sweetspot for me is 1440p which between the desktop 3070 and the laptop 3080 isn't worth paying double the price for a desktop 3070. Hell the laptop 3080 isn't crazy behind a desktop 3080 either. Sure the thermals are better on the desktop but that's to be expected and headphones are a thing so you wouldn't hear the fans anyways. I think I'm leaning towards the laptop setup just because it's easier and less of a hassle.
Right now its hard to build a PC as well, even prebuilts are getting crazy expensive and thats the only way one can get the new GPUs and CPU. The pricing is just wrong overall, laptops are cheaper cos of these scalper prices.
I'm one of the people who can't afford a gaming Laptop. Let alone Travel by Plane since i'm poor. I can only afford a tablet to watch video and comment with my sweaty hands.
I'm with you Matt, I was speccing out a PC build for later in the year, but the revamp of the G14 coming in the next month or so looks damn tempting. Portable, compact, QHD screen, decent battery life and still more than powerful enough for most uses. So what if it adds a minute or two to a render over a desktop 3060Ti? I'll sip espresso for another minute or so then upload.
I got this laptop with the i9 10980HK / 64GB RAM / RTX 3080 (17'3 Inch) This thing is a damn beast ! I'm gonna repaste it with Gelid GC Extreme and push it even further, that CPU gets very hot.
AHAHA I love how you said chubby cheeked Charlies xD Fun fact: My good friend's second name is Charly, he's chubby, sweats super fast, always complains about everything and is a pc games who mentions ALL THE FRICKIN TIME "Build your own PC, it's soooo much better and cheaper" (yet a friend built his) ... I'm dying haha. So my pc is 10 years old with an updated GTX 970... in 2017 I got a Laptop (GTX 1070) and a Samsung Tab A, as I have a distant relationship, but also enjoy gaming on the couch or at a friend's flat (also Charly's). So what sucks big time is switching files via eHDD, doing duplicate Updates and backing up files multiple times. Now ASUS is soon releasing the Flow X13 with an eGPU that solves it all in a great way. Replacing my desktop PC, Laptop and Tablet. Sure it's not as good as last year's high end desktop PCs... so what? I'll still be able to play 95% of my favorite games in Ultra settings with it. Even though it's expensive, I still save money as it's a 3in1 device and also has a lower environmental impact. Hopefull in the future laptops have enough Power for not needing an eGPU anymore and have enough internal drive space and a better cooling system.
This is a great topic. Recently, my engineering friend built me a "super computer" for $2,500, but because I'm not a gamer, he didn't use a computer graphics card. However, my 4K monitor, Zoom meetings, and video viewing demand a powerful graphics card, which will cost me $700 more or so and the current cards aren't even available. I put in a $200 old-generation graphics card and my computer is improved but still lagging with occasional monitor black-outs when I'm doing heavy use, so Mr. Moniz's presentation is persuasive.
@@DoctorHouse999Here in the UK the 3060 is going for around £700 on eBay and that's the only place in stock so the 3060 laptop for £999 is just a no brainer right now as with the laptop, you get a 6 core processor nvme ssd and a 240hz screen with the 3060 graphics.
Laptop competition has meant the prices (relative to country salary etc) of gaming laptops are pretty comparable to Desktop PCs now. You can get a 2080 max q Razer on ebay for £1500 - a gaming PC would cost around £1200 to get a similarly specced and running machine. You're paying £250+ more for the small form factor and the extra convenience to be able to take it anywhere. The used market is a crucial go-to for the savvy saver at the moment if you're looking for a great gaming laptop at a reasonable price.
Funny, I was just having this conversation with myself over the last few weeks. Because I've had in mind to replace my 4790K + GTX 970 desktop soon, and so I have been in that mode, looking at reviews of ITX PC cases, and blah blah blah. But somewhere along the line, I started watching laptop reviews, just because I'm a nerd and to get back in the loop. And I gotta say, for my needs, a laptop is probably a better buy. I pretty much play a handful of mid-tier games-e.g. Overwatch-at 60FPS, and the rest of the time I'm doing graphic design, 1440p video editing, photo editing, and some coding. Definitely something to think about. The one consideration for me is noise and heat-looking at you, Blade 14-and for that reason I'm considering a slightly more tame machine that does the basics right and tempers itself reasonably well. Considering my current setup, I am thinking the Surface Laptop Studio might be that machine. I'm open to any thoughts!
Unconvincing, sorry. It boils down to this: if you are a casual gamer that happens to be moving often and want a pc that you can bring with you and can do also work/study/content creation while on the go, a gaming laptop will give you more per buck than a desktop. Sure. But if you are a more serious gamer, spending 2-3 hours or more per day playing, the advantages of a laptop fully disappear. Not only these marginal performances gain that you cite are VITAL in some games, I get to enjoy 4k gaming for a moderate price, something I need to spend thousands of $ in a gaming laptop. Moreover, I don't have to worry about thermal throttling, overheating my hands while playing, bad ergonomics, reducing details, small screens and so on. Yes, I can attach an external keyboard to my gaming laptop, a gaming mouse and play on my 30" monitor at home. But then you are basically playing on a subpar desktop. With none of the performance advantages and the pricetag of an expensive good gaming laptop. I own both a laptop and a desktop. I casual game on the laptop old games and play recent ones on the desktop. I get the best of both worlds by saving some money over an overpriced gaming laptop (I spent ~$1000 on the laptop and recently fully updated the desktop for $1400). There's nothing wrong admitting that a desktop pc is better for gaming as a business/content creation laptop is better for working on the go. I do, maybe you could too.
Dope video. I recently bought the asus g15 with a 3070, sold it. Going to probably downgrade to a cheaper 3060, or maybe even a 2000 series if the price is right. I mostly game on my playstation at home and just somewhat game on laptop when i travel and at work. I spend most my time with my laptop watching movies or boogie boarding the web. 4k panel is kind of a necessity now, going from my phone to tv and then then the lower res laptop kind of makes my eyes wobble. In a perfect world we would have 4k high refresh rate laptops, with the silicon to power them, and the engineering to cool them. We are almost there. Would like to see you do some real world comparisons with these new 3000 laptops and last years...lots of great deals to be had for folks that dont need the latest and greatest. I have yet see a gaming laptop reviewer address how netflix/disney+ or whatever looks on these displays. Some of these displays are unwatchable due to backlight bleed and widescreen videos. at least in my experience. thanks, love the channel.
Drop that knowledge bomb Matt!! I play cyberpunk at 1080 no problems on my 4yr old laptop. One can not simply say a desktop is always the answer and you made many valid points. Keep making these videos
For me the biggest issue right now with building a PC is availability of GPUs which makes it basically impossible to build it in a reasonable price which kind of forces people to buy gaming laptops or stick to their old rigs if they have any.

I'm switching to gaming laptop because I'm tired of the big desktop tower that takes up a lot of space. Also, portability, I don't want to be stuck at a desk. It's nice to be able to edit/render a video while sitting on my couch. Lastly, I sometimes want to game on my living room TV and I have in the past moved my big gaming desktop from my office to the living room to play games. I know laptops are more expensive and don't perform as well as similar priced desktops but I'm switching out of convenience. It's still powerful enough to do all the things I want to do and it's portable.

It's really a matter of, "Do you want decent settings/performance and great portability, or do you want excellent settings/performance but with the trade-off of really poor portability?"

Totally agreed. We have good reasons to look for gaming laptops these days.

4 years later,
Now i own a i7, 11800h with RTX 3070 (Msi Gp 76). i also work/game on a benq moniter 240hz for eports. (Valorant)
My life style changed a little as time passes, nonetheless i use this new msi laptop as an desktop replacement hardware. it's still acts like how my peers desktop counter parts.
Good thing i had extended warrenty so the whole motherboard was replaced for free.
gonna tell my kids this was Dr disrespect's tech channel

People just don't understand that I need something powerful and PORTABLE that can be carried around with me.
A tech-TH-camr defending laptop users??? Finally!
Thank you man! You made me feel alot better with my buying choice. I dont have the space for a desktop set up. So a gaming laptop was the best choice and it honestly plays great. Keep doing what you do 🙂👍
Glad I could help!

Everyone just keeps boasting about desktops and during these times of scarcity laptops makes even more sense.
One of the most amazing point that you raised was if something goes bad, you have to deal with just the manufacturer and not the part manufacturer.

Laptop has a battery. That alone makes me purchase one over a PC

Me who plays games on a Pentium:
Both are fine!
Nowadays gaming laptops are the best way to game
Great content as always Sir

Which one have you bought?
I'm with you Matt, I was speccing out a PC build for later in the year, but the revamp of the G14 coming in the next month or so looks damn tempting. Portable, compact, QHD screen, decent battery life and still more than powerful enough for most uses. So what if it adds a minute or two to a render over a desktop 3060Ti? I'll sip espresso for another minute or so then upload.
I got this laptop with the i9 10980HK / 64GB RAM / RTX 3080 (17'3 Inch) This thing is a damn beast !
I'm gonna repaste it with Gelid GC Extreme and push it even further, that CPU gets very hot.
this is gonna be hard for me with a super tower 😂
AHAHA I love how you said chubby cheeked Charlies xD
Fun fact: My good friend's second name is Charly, he's chubby, sweats super fast, always complains about everything and is a pc games who mentions ALL THE FRICKIN TIME "Build your own PC, it's soooo much better and cheaper" (yet a friend built his) ...
Update: I own the ASUS ROG Flow X13+XGM RTX 3080 for almost a year and it's absolutely mindblowing!
Lmao at the moment you could buy a whole high-ish end laptop for the price of one 3080 on ebay
Then factor in another grand for decent equipment to go with your gpu. And having to be stationary at your desk all the time
This is a great topic. Moniz's presentation is persuasive.
its better to buy a cheaper 3060 or 3070 laptop instead of the 3080. The price difference does not justify the increase in performance
3060 laptops are going for 1200 dollars now. That's just crazy value.
@@frowningboat8039 yup. especially for first time buyers, laptops are a great idea now.
The first 47 secs destroyed everything xD
Hey guess what you can’t do either
I thought you're going to change my mind. What I didn't saw coming is that typical guy boasting about the portability and availability of the specs. Sure no problem with that. And let me remind you that not all your viewers are crazy rich to afford those expensive laptops. What I came here looking for was an comparison between a low, mid and high range laptop and pc, not only high end. Sorry I came with high expectations.
