I enjoyed the vid and glad to see Cary posting info vids again. I was hoping you mention to new pin buyers to use pinball arcade, zen pinball, or visual pinball (free) as a resource to try out machines virtually before buying them. Playing them on location doesn’t really make sense in a covid world, and was rare to find in the wild certain older DMD titles anyway.

Late to the party here, but pricing is definitely an issue depending on where you live. Unfortunately, I live in California & it’s very difficult finding machines slit here & when you do, the prices are high. That being said, before I looked for machines, I first searched for a pinball repairman. I was able to locate one within a hour of my home. He has given me tons of advice. In the end, I purchased a couple of machines from him that had been completely restored. Saving a few hundred bucks by driving 8hrs round trip (Ca is huge) just didn’t add up, especially when I wasn’t guaranteed the condition of the machines. I was able to look and play several examples locally. So, I suggest nobody ever buys a pinball machine without first testing it and looking at it in person.

I like this video.... 2 reasons.
    1. How to buy a pinball machine
    2. How to respond to "What's the lowest you'll take?" I hope I never for get your response to that, it's classic and I wish I had thought of that when selling several cars on Craigslist.
Some of what you discussed was what I thought to be common sense (sticking within a budget... etc..) But I'm grateful that you gave examples of where to do research when you suggest to do research.... I had not heard of pinballprices.com so thank you.
So you don't cover this in this video... not sure if you have a video on this. There are a few videos on "how to buy a pinball machine" and they address a first time buyer. They don't address what to do once you've bought the machine. I.E. How do I get it home? That's an intimating part of the purchase. I don't own a machine. I don't understand what I need to do to move it around and transport it home. I understand most machines disassemble in some way for transport... not sure how. I don't want to end up driving 300 miles with a fully assembled machine in the back of my pickup.
Maybe I'll find a video on that?

  • @101Osprey101
    @101Osprey101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

What a load of crap. $2500 for a good game? WRONG. This is part of the damn problem that is driving up game prices. False information and people who overprice and "flip" games. If all you are looking for is a "prestige" collection, expect to pay a lot. If you just want to impress people with your expensive toys, start throwing money out. However, if you actually like pinball, the game, you do NOT need to spend anywhere close to that amount to get good, fun games. That lineup in the background has tons of bling and yes, some fun games, but you do not need to spend that kind of money to have some great games. People who like the game, the actual GAME, do not look at bling near as much as game play. Some of the best playing games were made long before any in that lineup.
ALSO... if you plan on owning a pinball machine, you absolutely MUST be prepared to repair it. There are very, very few people out there that will come and repair your game and if they do, they can be, and usually are, expensive. You can spend more repairing some games than you paid for the game and repairs do not increase the value.
Don't be afraid to buy machines with problems. This will massively reduce the price. You WILL need to fix it at some point. Start out by learning how to fix it and save a TON of money. If you actually like the game, you need to know how it is put together, how to take it apart and how to take care of it. Do not be afraid to learn.
There are so many points not mentioned here. Zero mention of what makes a good game. Zero mention of maintenance. Zero mention of electromagnet (EM) games.
Cary, you do not like the game. You like the bling.
I have close to a dozen pins, three EM shooters, 5 video games, 2 shuffle alleys, a change machine and a pay phone. One of the most popular games in my house was made in 1968. it is a Gottlieb Royal Guard. Universally loved by almost everyone that comes over.
The biggest collector I know is now slowly replacing many of his newer games with older games because once you get past the flashy stuff, it's the actual game play that matters.
    Spend time playing before buying.
Don't be afraid to buy a cheap game for 500 or less.
Do not buy any game before checking out the gameplay and known issues. New games in particular are filled with factory problems. Even older games can have really annoying known problems. A perfect example is the classic 1979 Kiss machine. Everyone loves the look and the gameplay is fun, but it has a really annoying known issue with the ROM (programming) that causes the sound to stop in mid play and remain out until the ball is lost.
If you are new to buying a pin, ask people who know. Join pinball groups on facebook. Go to shows and meet people. Message me, if nothing else.
Great games can be found for FAR less than $2500.00.
Never ever buy from anyone that "flips" games. Don't do it. Just don't. They drive up prices and take advantage of you. Don't pay a lot of extra for mods. Mods are never expensive to buy and easy to install. Don't be fooled because someone added a spotlight.
Ugh... I could go on and on.
