    When the Doctor tells Amy in the Eleventh Hour that her life may depend on her knowing they the Doctor is just a mad man with a box, this is it. Amy has built the Doctor up as some kind of god in her head and this is the moment she understands the Doctor is just a bloke with a box, and the Doctor then realises he's putting her in too much danger and takes her home. It's perfect.

    I don't agree with the idea that nothing interesting was done with David Walliams' character, while he's set up to be the comic relief character, as the story progresses we explore the full depths of his cowardice, as he's prepared to throw other people under the bus if it means he'll survive, and thus any chance of him being a likeable or fun character is purposefully destroyed by about halfway through the episode

    • @Helbore
      @Helbore 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I agree. He seems comical, but he's actually a nasty, self-serving little man. Heck, the Doctor directly confronts him about this. He's the sort of cowardly character that hides behind innocent people so they get shot first.
      A very dark character hiding behind the illusion of comedy.

    • @theguywithsomething8634
      @theguywithsomething8634 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly. He's a character who won't truly stand up for anything, or anyone, but his own immediate survival. Now that's all fun and games when it's dignity or general backbone he's throwing away, but when it's morals? Strangers? Friends? A child? He is entirely without loyalty, and there really is no line he will not cross or monster he will not submit to and aid if it means his own continued survival.

      It's not faith in a higher power, it's just believing in something - that is explicitly stated in the episode - whether it's a belief in a god, a belief in luck, a belief that events are shaped by conspiracy theories... It doesn't matter what the belief is IN, the belief is what feeds the monster.

    • @MattJWaters

    For me, this is one of my two favourite Matt Smith episodes and an easy 8, maybe even a 9. The concept is so simple yet creepy and I found myself thinking about what would be in my room if I were in the hotel too. The repetition of 'praise him' often whispered and the quick-cut shots of the characters being serious and then giggling all add to the slow sense that the audience is also going slightly mad, which really adds to the story. I agree Rory is kind of sidelined here but ultimately the story is about Amy's faith in the doctor as a god-like being, so it wouldn't really make sense for it to focus on Rory and then have the flip at the end that it was actually all about Amy. I notice you completely skipped over the minotaur's last words where he shames the doctor for being a creature bathed in the blood of the innocent which was a nice chilling note to end on - perhaps the doctor isn't even a normal person (as opposed to a god) but actually more like a devil.
    Obviously these are just opinions about a TV show at the end of the day so all opinions are valid but I really got the sense you missed some of the better parts of this episode that make it a really great stand-alone story.

I forgot all about the whole faith aspect of the episode, but I always thought Amy waiting for the Doctor was the DOCTOR'S fear.
    The fear of someone waiting for him, whether that be waiting for him to take them somewhere, waiting for him to come by so they could talk one last time, or waiting for him to rescue them and him never showing up. That would have been much more powerful than Amy having "faith" in the Doctor.

    The reason the mole man’s room is full of weeping angels could just be a simple fear of them as many viewers share, but many believe it to be pretty self explanatory, His race survive off of other races having pity for them but the angels don’t have pity, they don’t invade or inslave they simply kill

    10:35 "...which is fine until..."
    This line could've been fixed so easily to not imply that the Doctor believes its morally ok. He could've said
    "...which works for a while/time until..."

    Harry seems very blinkered by his opinions, not seeing obvious explanations when having a personally negative opinion of an episode, and overly praising small or irrelevant details when liking it; objective he most certainly is not, and makes CinemaSins look like forensic analysts. :)

    So can I just ask something? All of those people that died in the hotel. Do the bodies just stay there forever or does The Doctor grab them and send them back to their families for proper burial rituals?

    I honestly liked this episode a lot. I think it might be the only one I really enjoyed in Series 6, but after listening to you I do agree in some points. Still, I would give a 7/10.
    And I liked Rita a lot more than I can ever like Amy, I actually care for her as a character. I laughed when the Doctor said, "Amy, you're fired", because I liked the idea of Rita becoming a companion, But it was obvious she wasn't going to survive the episode, lol.

    As much as I enjoy this episode and how well it sends Amy off the TARDIS (for now), the fact this happened AFTER The Girl Who Waited really makes it suffer if you think about how different it would have been if they left after the events on Apalapucia (be it the Doctor similarly realizing the danger he put them in or both Amy and Rory deciding to leave themselves.)

    I feel like it was pathetic using something hidden inside The Doctor’s room, and the mystery of what “faith” he has. It shows that to some degree they knew it sucked ass and needed a way to keep people interested.
    Also I would like to point out that they never have once tried to explain his faith, or his fear.

    11:24 this shot pisses me off because like, the floor is set up in a grid, literally the easiest way to align things... and yet the floor window is neither on the grid, nor between it... made even worse by the fact that this basic design rule is followed by the nearest window, 20 feet away, does follow this rule, made even worse even worse by the fact that both the minotaur and the fekking TARDIS obey the rule in spite of not having any reason to do so due to them not being put there by design (within the show's context)

    "An alien monster dictator, invading and ruling over planets is fine?" tecnically isn't that what a "god" is? i mean, beings that exists in other realms with inexplicable powers over all kinds of things and having sets of rules and followers, idk but in other terms it sounds a lot like alien monsters to me

  • @TorridPrime217
    @TorridPrime217 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is another episode I've always hated and I think its a perfect example as to why I've always hated the Moffat Era. While the concept of combining Stephan King's 'The Shining' with the Labyrinth from Greek Mythology is an absolutely smashing concept, the execution leaves a whole world to be desired with a literal minotaur and not some nebulous creature we never actually see [when we see it, it loses a fear factor] because it has a form the human mind cannot comprehend, or anything cool and high-concept like that, and the stupid, ridiculous, and inexplicable 'feeding off of faith' thing [no idea how that would even work with a literal minotaur]
    Why is it even called 'The God Complex'? Who in this episode has a god complex? Does the complex there are in have a mind of it's own and thinks itself the god over it's inhabitants? What does the Shining or the Labyrinth have to do with a god complex?
    If I really had to guess, I would think it VAGUELY refers to the Doctor having one, but that feels so utterly disconnected from the episode [outside of some very arbitrary-feeling references to religion] that I completely forgot that it was even the name of this episode.
    There's a really good idea buried deep within this episode, but the writers unfortunately have no idea how to make good of it, so what we get is a jumbled, confusing, full-of-itself, bloated mess of a story that barely makes any sense.
    To me, that is the Moffat Era in a nutshell
