Yes.the houses are so shabby and run down as they were in the years just after the war.very authentic and atmospheric.love the contrast with susan who can pay for her own abortion.i thought she was a very fine actress too.the guy who played reg is always good in films.
Pardoning the resentment of the subject matter, this is a great movie. Imelda Staunton is a marvelous actress. Her performance was excellent, and so very believable.
I've never really noticed her until I watched her performance in Vera Drake, and I've been a fan ever since. I mean, I've seen her before, but her performance in this particular film made me realize that she had incredible depth. Perhaps because it's the one role I've seen her play where she wasn't a mousy, fast-talking, poor, outsider perpetually on the verge of nervous exhaustion. Thanks for posting.
Just watched the film on TV. Such distraught acting, it was heart rending to watch poor Vera's life fall apart because of her selfless kindness. The charectors in this film were all believable..flawless acting. A film with a real insight into the early 50's and the class division between rich & poor. Hard times.
``Selfless kindness?'' Mrs. Barnes' daughter almost died. And, I thought there must have been something wrong with Vera Drake to have raised such an odd daughter, Ethel. What was wrong with Ethel?
Christina M I haven't watched the film yet but her intentions were 100% good and innocent. She only wanted to help, but something apparently went badly wrong. And the daughter might just have been different - you know, already when she was born. Something different in her brains, physical reason.

Vera Drake was such a heart-breaking movie. I was worried when I heard Imelda would be playing Umbridge because I couldn't see her playing an evil character because she was such a sweet old thing in Vera Drake but Imelda totally pulled it off in the Potter movies. She's brilliant :)
a real example of pure method acting, and look how good the end product is! So many ctors and directors overook these kinds of things. All mike Leigh's films are top notch.
