The new show "Mary & George" covers the lives of Mary Villiers and her son George Villiers as George seduces King James VI & I and becomes the royal favorite. A true story, but the real one is starkly different from what we see in the show. Come learn with me about a notoriously gay King and his scandalous boyfriends.

Shoutout to my high school AP european history teacher for not being afraid to teach a class of 10th graders in Utah that King James was gay
The hero we need!
Truly a hero, mad respect for your teacher
I wonder if we had the same teacher because I had a very similar class experience
I can only imagine how brave that was!
wait was this in Utah county? I might have had the same teacher lol
I hope, if I am remembered in history, that I, like King James, am referred to as 'notoriously gay'
While I on the other hand fear being considered an "unsubstantiated bisexual". Let the record show that I am very much a bisexual!
@@erraticonteuse Here, here, I applaud your valiant effort! Your labors shall not be in vain!
@@erraticonteuse I on the other hand would love to be an "unsubstantiated bisexual". I want bigots to get mad when people say I could've been a bit fruity.
He ironically also translated the Bible, so... those Bible thumpers who keep saying, But it's in Plain English... look at the Bible.
how do i say king james served cunt in olden english
This makes me laugh SO hard, because the Baptist school I grew up in treated the KJV like it came straight from the mouth of God himself, but they were also so openly homophobic. The irony of this situation is DELICIOUS.
I've known for a while that James was gay, and yes, the irony is delicious. 😈
Yeah, I think the KJV bible & his "how to torture witches" treatise is more historically significant than his preference of companions. But sex scandals are more entertaining I guess
This irony makes me so happy 😂❤️❤️❤️🎉
Yes, it's hilarious.
"George... Were you a top or a bottom?"
THE WAY I SCREAMED 💀💀💀💀
Top!
Well apparently his guts got rearranged ⚱
Answer: Verse
Legitimately did a spittake at “Mary grieved her cringefail husband” 😂😂😂
Have you ever considered doing a video on how you curate your outfits/looks for your videos? I love how you manage to always serve amazing looks while being on theme for the subject matter.
I would love to see a video about this as well! How does a person find a period appropriate doublet anyway? Fashion secrets must be revealed!
Me too!
I would love to know where the pieces in their outfits are found.
also a portion about their makeup!!
I'm interested too
The people getting concerned that James was in love with a older man because the man was french and catholic is funny as hell. They aren't homophobic, but accepting catholics and french people are too much.
Edit: what I have learnt with this video? There is no bigger crime than being catholic and french.
They were still homophobic but this was during a time when homosexuality was seen as actions rather than an identity.
@@simply_nebulous
Plus, he was King, and when you're on top of the social hierarchy you can get away with a LOT of things, even the taboo
For the English, yes. I thought this was widely known
@@susanwhite7474 I don't know, I am not British, I live in a country where the majority of the population is catholic, I knew about the Christians battle royale, but I didn't think that much about it so I was surprised 😭
@@simply_nebulous yes, but it still so funny to me, man
Thank you for teaching me that King James of the King James Bible was gay. I had no idea about that fact and the irony is delicious.
I'm so ecstatic you covered this, I'm obsessed with James VI/I.
Other things that really interest me about James are that he was a huge nerd and proud of his intellectual powers. He was also possibly disabled (although I think we have to take various scholars' retroactive diagnoses with grains of salt). I feels that these traits are interlinked with his queerness. Plus his traumatic early experiences leading him to have this sort of love-starved, needy behavior that made him vulnerable to manipulation - simultaneously being this canny schemer and naively believing that love would conquer all - make this fascinating, layered, tragic figure for me.
I was waiting for something like Mary & George for years before it was announced and ended up being pretty disappointed by it, but I'm still THRILLED that it exists and that the world knows about this queer king and George Villiers's dark Cinderella story. Finally in 2024 we gays can have our lush, sexualized, prurient and exaggerated, "why did they decide to do it that way", why-didn't-they-give-us-the-moustache English royalty costume drama, too!!!
Also those are exactly the same questions I would ask George Villiers's ghost.
"george have you watched Mary & George"
love the subtle nod to the fashion of the time with the small and subtle collar of your shirt
I almost missed it, it's so subtle!
“…the most shameful affliction of all… being French.” made me guffaw.
😂 Yeah, that sounds about right for the English.
unrelated to this amazing video i just experienced the strongest sneeze ive ever snuzzed
bless you :(
@@ez-ru3do thank u 🥰
nice Aidan pfp
"Mary & George" is soooo damn good! Moore, Curran and Galitzine are giving the most amazing performances.
Kaz thank you for supporting the people in Palestine and those protesting 💚🖤♥️🤍
You are so right, the true history is mainly much more interesting and dramatic.
I wish we could have seen Kaz on puppet history 😭
Kaz darling, your outfits always add an additional layer of perfection to your wonderful vlectures!...yes. video lectures because your uploads aren't just entertaining, they're educational ❤
[Whimsical Echo] ✨Vlectures~✨
I'm imagining Kaz's heavy ass suitcase as an old fashioned trunk filled with historical outfits
It’s an older movie, but would you consider doing one of those videos on The Favourite please??
I thought she did! But YES I second this!!!!
thank you so much for highlighting the PCRF, it's so needed ❤❤
Yes this
love that you’re supporting the childrens relief fund!!! ❤️🇵🇸
As a French viewer, some parts of your video were really hilarious. I didn't know much about King James and actually had no idea he was gay. So I learnt a whole lot of new things thanks to you !
A friend of mine did some work cataloguing some letters between James and George at the National Library of Scotland, and he delighted myself and another friend of ours by showing us how common it was for George to sign his letters as "your Majesty's dog." When James said the "we should play... like pups" in the show, I SCREAMED.
Fascinating, it’s always interesting to find out both how much and how little we know about the major players in history. So much gets filtered through the perspective of history writers and common gossip.
It sounds like an awful lot of the people in these courtly stories were disasters of one kind or another. So much drama - there’s no need to add to or elaborate upon their stories in tv shows or movies! 😂
I love the blackwork embroidery on Kaz’s shirt! Very eye catching.
"George whats your opinion on this season of drag race"
PORTSMOUTH MENTIONED 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 THE VIBE IS STILL AS SHIT AS IT WAS IN 1628 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
My Favourite hot teacher is back...Love your charity donation to Palestinian children..wish I could donate too.
I would love you to talk about the Chevalier movie next. He is so interesting, but I found the movie so disappointing. I mean the man lived with Mozart, he had over 400 duels, and spoke to kings all over the world about freeing the slaves in their kingdoms. How can you make someone like that look so boring?
Petition for the show Kaz the Ghost Hunter
thank you for speaking about Palestine!!!❤️🤍💚
Awesome video! And I’m pretty jealous that you got to stay at the Spotted Dog. I know you probably gotten this request a million times already, but I would personally love to see a video like this about My Lady Jane.
I enjoy your historically accurate lighting :)
Not the Scottish Seance 😂
Im super excited to watch this later but I have to comment now on your wonderful collar
I can't believe I'm only just discovering this channel! Kaz is informative and a fucking delight!
i found it very clear that in the show, james was married with ann of denmark by the time mary was trying to push george into james’ line of interest.
Having been born and raised in Portsmouth, and a child of and participant in 17th century reenacting I still didn't know anything about the Pompey connection 🤣
As a vague segue - I would love for you to do an episode on Dumas...
How am I supposed to process the fact that the modern Bible was commissioned by a gay king???🙃
This show slaps. I’m so happy you made a video on it
That collar is FIRE!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for covering this because the trailers had me so curious, but I don't have the time to research it on my own. I love everything you do, Queen!
I cant with some of the old pictures or paintings are funny as hell 🤣
as someone who watched the miniseries, thank you for this little history lesson! I was wondering what was the truth in all of it
amazing videos, thank you so much for the subtitles, its a small thing but literally allows me to watch your content!!!
Thrilled to have seen this and your channel ❤😊
Great video! the trying to talking to George was amazing
your outfit is *chef's kiss*! LOVE it!
I'm delighted to see a new video of yours. I always enjoy them - the scholarship is impeccable, and the presentation is delightful.
I do appreciate the charity you support in this episode.
I love learning from you!!! Best topic to bring up at a family dinner
Obsessed with the picture of you holding the knife that killed the guy you're telling us about at 39:13
I'm workng my way through the show, will be back next week 😅
I grew up Scottish Protestant and I’m proud to have been raised on a gay man’s bible.
Just arrived in Edinburgh today believe it or not, love the video timing!!! 😂
new video on my in office day, i'm winning life
this is gonna be funny but before I watched mary and george, I saw your tweet about the knife that had killed george and that 'spoiled' it for me lol! I know it's not really a spoiler bc we're talking about historic events but I mean, I didn't know that much about him so it was just a bit funny to see that tweet just before I watched the series
I just started watching the series, and I must say I LOVE the costumes. I have no thoughts on the story yet, but we'll see
kaz this video was amazing!! thank you :D
Minor note that the official name of that translation of the Bible is the Authorised Version. KJV or King James Version is a very popular colloquialism. Also going to note that there was a popular saying that "Elizabeth was King, now James is Queen".
I love this video (and I love that lace collar!), but maybe I'm not alone in finding it really difficult to keep track of all these same-y white boi names. Would it be possible to maybe keep little head portraits of the main players on screen (even just small at the bottom or off to the side) with their name+title for things like this?
I got chills when you showed how forgotten his grave was. I KNOW this King as the King James of the King James Bible. In that alone his name lives on as part of our lexicon. The fact that the most popular and used version of the Christian Bible is named for a homos3xual king does not surprise me. I am extremely jealous you got to go to Edinburgh.
P.S. That "George Villiers Found Dead in Miami" was *TOP TIER* my goodness
i am from Portsmouth, born and raised, and I don't think I ever noticed anything to do with George lol after going to uni in Bristol I did notice Pompey's love for isambard kingdom Brunel tho, got a great pub near the guild hall named after him and also a statue near gunwharf quays
Not the first king of England who was a bit light on the loafers...Richard the Lionheart, even though he barely spent any time in England and was in fact French.
You should reach out to Dalen Spratt. This collaboration could be interesting and eye opening.
Is it just me, or is the audio a little off? It’s like echo-y?
Still happy as always for a new Kaz video!
How dare you amend 'the dagger what killed him' in the edit
I find this so interesting cause I had only really heard about the Duke of Buckingham as the guy parliament was mad at for “ getting the navy drunk in Cadiz harbour” * thank you jack rack ham * and how this was one of the many things that led to the whole mess that was the English civil war(s).
im a sick lil bitch right now so real glad to see another kaz video to stop the days blending together
Ahh, the classic Hapsburg jumpscare
I wonder if blending animation and "filming," with a little faith in an audience's willingness to suspend disbeleif, could make harder history economical. I remember a science fiction movie that had been produced by a family whose characters all looked like one another, so is to satisfy the taste of the producers in people. This was a well-budgeted, OK-acted, phantasmigoricam (if that is a word.)
Obviously, the mistake was talking to George in modern English. How would they say "are you a top?" Back then?
On the one hand, the show's made for entertainment so I didn't expect anything but that, and on the other hand, the show also proudly claims accuracy. All I know is Tony Curran, Julianne Moore and Nicolas Galitzine entertained me lol and it sounds like James was set up for failure with his health
The collar!!! We stan king. ❤
Is this James the Bonnie prince?
I'm dying at the ghost investigation bit ajdhkfgh hope he appreciated Megan Thee Stallion!
Thank you for playing Megan the stallion for that old dead queen 😂 I’m sure he loved it
It needs to be called the Queen James Bible from now on :P
That lace collar is gorge
HUH.
i just realized.. Historical inaccuracies in shows are rather fine?
*because* we all soon learn about those inaccuracies afterwards 'anyway'.
Getting entertained twice, educated once ;)
“Is that a dagger I see before me?” … … … “Innit?”
I always thought King James portraits favored David Rizzios portraits. Things that make you go hmmmmm
Earthly Joys, by Phillipa Gregory
Seriously, irritated by Mary's love with Sandie? I knew it was ahistorical, this is an interpretation of history that fills a lot of gaps with faction. It absolutely killed me when Sandie was murdered :(
You're on point about the irony of how the KJV bible is used these days. On a side note, Alan Cumming played a wonderfully campy King James in Dr Who.
Bio pics are seldom about the “true’ story… they have themes they are trying to communicate. Narrative devices are used for storytelling… the themes in Mary and George is about how toxic masculinity is embedded in the past and to the present day, and where gay, lesbian, and feminism intersect to help and dismantle each other historically as they share common issues but also in bids for power often believe there isn’t enough room for themselves and others in the toxic masculinity room let alone a seat at the table.
The podcast Noble Blood does a great episode on this where she brings on the author whose book was one of the main inspirations for the show. Highly recommend checking that out if you want to learn more about this topic and/or other chaotic royals from history.
You will have to keep us updated on if George is a top or bottom or what his thoughts on drag race are (someone in the spotted dog inn should have a tv playing all the ✨🌈 gay 💅✨ shows for George as a treat)
i do (wonder about and) hope you can do a video comparing/contrasting james to edward ii
“unsubstantiated bisexuals” band name 🤘 called it
I thought James was bisexual…But it's even better this way❤️🔥
My new favorite TARGET
I want to know George's opinion on the new season of Drag Race! 🙂
Am I a bad person for having little sympathy for Mary Queen of Scots? Everything I read about her, she was really a hot-headed snob who burned all her bridges, was pretty stubborn when it came to listening to her council/people/Elizabeth I/Catherine De Medici/etc... and was caught more or less red handed in all her schemes against her courtiers, her husband, and Elizabeth I and was really only in Scotland because she had destroyed all of her opportunities in the rest of Europe. She had a rough and tragic end to her life, but honestly with ALL the advantages she was given she almost had to work hard at her own destruction. Great video though, I have going to strive to find an excuse to use the term "Boytoy Supreme" in casual conversation.
Lmao George would love drag 😂😂😂😂
There was no such thing as gay back then and as a result nobody was homophobic. So the king wasn’t gay. If we do need to use modern terms, he would have been bisexual. James was openly against sodomy and this reflected in his laws. Nobody bat an eyelid and male bedfellows as this was completely normal. The females too did the same. It was for safety and warmth. It was the men of the court, the nobility that declined Mary because she was female and Catholic. The common people had no issue with her. What is your source to claim that Mary hated Scotland? What is your proof that Bothwell killed Darnley? This is shockingly bad and misleading “history”. And that’s just in the first 14 minutes
Thank you for supporting a charity to benefit Palestine 🍉
James also had a mistress. So he was likely by our modern terminology Bi? Anne Murray.
Random question but what is the background music you use starting around 37:08 Its really pretty
@FundieFridays !!!!
