- Jimmy Kimmel has fired back at Donald Trump after reports surfaced early this week about Trump trying to have Kimmel censored by complaining to Disney executives. Kimmel took a few minutes to roast Trump before pivoting to a more nuanced attack against Republican hypocrisy in general. After News broke earlier this week from a Rolling Stone report that Donald Trump had his staff essentially try to cancel Jimmy Kimmel cuz he was offended by the late night hosts. Jokes about him, Jimmy Kimmel fired back. Eddie did it in what might be the most beautiful way I think I've ever seen, because not only did Kimmel make some jokes about it, but he then immediately segued into an exceptionally valid criticism, not just of Trump, but of the entire Republican party. So I'm gonna read you part of this monologue from Jimmy Kimmel. Again, there isn't a single part of this that I don't find absolutely brilliant.
Maybe this is why Donald and Melania sleep in separate bedrooms. She was laughing too hard at my monologue at night. I made fun of OJ Simpson a thousand times. He hasn't tried to kill me once. What a plot twist the first time Donald Trump ever tries to stop someone from talking about him on television, and it's me. In other words, president Karen demanded to speak to my manager. Usually when Trump wants someone to stop talking about him, he pays them $130,000. So in addition to taking a couple shots at Donald Trump's marriage, his thin skin, his narcissism, he also called out the payments to Stormy Daniels. All valid points and all pretty funny. But then things took a very serious turn. As I mentioned, Kimmel launched into this, uh, I guess you could call it an attack on the entire Republican party. Here it is. Joking aside, this is a blatant abuse of power.
I wonder if Fox News, they're always screaming about censoring comedians. Will they defend me on this? I doubt it. We have a First Amendment right that Americans, uh, uh, a hell of a lot braver than Donald Trump died for. This is especially hypocritical coming from someone who claims to be the big lest antis censorship defender of free speech. It's a shame. Representative Jim Jordan just had his big congressional hearing on the weaponization of the federal government, and I couldn't be there to testify about a president of the United States who abused his authority to silence someone who disagrees with him and tried to muzzle him. I'm so sorry, Jim. I would've been happy to ta uh, to help with that. As for Trump, if you wanna come on the show to tell me to be quiet yourself, we still have that arcade claw machine that the MyPillow guy got in. You can climb inside and say whatever's on your delicate little mind. So you can tell there's anger there. And I think the anger is rightfully placed because we do have an entire political party in this country right now that is whining and crying about censorship, whining and crying about alleged abuse of power that doesn't actually exist. Trump, the president of the United States at the time, when this happened in 2018, trying to censor someone that is a clear violation of the First Amendment. If people could read and understand what they read, then they would know that the first ammendment applies to the rights of the people over the government, and only the government. And this is a clear violation of that right.

It is the problem he shares with most Republicans and not a few Democrat politicians, even after taking office they still think of themselves as private citizens and their official government staff as their personal employees. As a powerful private citizen there would be nothing illegal with Trump getting his aide to try to put pressure on Kimmel's bosses, it is immoral but not illegal, what so many politicians don't seem to understand is that the same action from a government official is extremely illegal. This is compounded by the current hypocrisy of the Republicans that while they see nothing wrong with themselves trying to silence critics, either when they are in office or out of it, they pretend that any pushback of their "side" is censorship no matter what the criticism is or how much actual power the critics have.

But that is valid: this IS the censorship they often whine about... something that doesn't really happen to them unless they treat reprimanding behavior that violates the rules as censorship, but are also the first the use that the moment they get a whiff of someone not liking them.
For me this also extends to journalism in general. The media is far from perfect and clearly has to be held to a higher standard than comedy late night shows. But the verbal and judicial attacks on networks and journalists has spiked tremendously since Trump. How long until they wrench a legislation into action that limits the free press?

I watched that monologue. Jimmy Kimmel was funny and brutal, as Trump deserved. The part where he listed all the names they came up with for Trump made me double over with laughter. Each one was a slap on Trump's face and I loved it!
