If doctors and nurses have to be looking over their shoulder in case, somebody is riding them out for speaking English to an English patient, or even a French patient for that matter, then their undivided attention is not going to be on the care of that patient. Think in terms of an operating room. If doctors and nurses are in the middle of an operation, they have to have in the back of their mind all the time what language they’re speaking to each other, even fearing retribution from the government? This is a matter of great concern for our healthcare system. Once again this, coercive government has put in oppressive law into place. How can this go on?

Both times PQ went to the polls, they had record turnouts. In 1980, almost said 60% they wanted to stay. in 1995, just over 50% said they wanted to stay. That included the First Nations and the Inuit Peoples (over 96% each) Northern PQ, the Beauce, most of island of Montreal, most of the Eastern Townships, and the Outaouais Region (across from Ottawa, the National Capital) Those areas ALL wished to STAY with Canada.
" In the aftermath of the close result, the federal government, after unilaterally recognizing Quebec as a distinct society and amending the federal constitutional veto procedure, referred the issue to the Supreme Court of Canada, which stated that the unilateral secession contemplated in the referendum was illegal. " By that same ruling, the French Only Law is ILLEGAL.
I was in hospital in Montreal just as Covid hit in March of 2020 (hypoglycemia on my way back to Ottawa from Halifax) and they would NOT speak English to me. My French Language comprehension was decades ago in HS, and they also wanted me to fill out a French Language medical form for billing. I said I needed a translator, as my french was poor, and because of the hypoglycemia, I couldn't even read the form! They keep sending me bills, and I shred them. I'm untouchable over here in Ottawa, Canada (because of my disability status) Until Quebec toes the line, they can STUFF IT.
Go Ahead, Leave. Half of the province will STAY with Canada... and the rest will FAIL as a separate entity. 😂🤣

Finally someone is speaking about this disgrace. Healthcare should not be included in the language issue. The Minister of Health in CANADA should step in and stop this useless law. Quebec has hired so many FRENCH ONLY speaking people to work in the HealthCare system who barely speak French properly let alone English. There are many Seniors that speak English and very little FRENCH so all the children need to take time off work to go with them to every appointment just so they can understand what the Doctors and Nurses are saying. A CLSC work actually told my mom that she is not obligated to speak to her in English - I lost it. How dare you tell a Senior Woman that you can't speak to her in English. I speak , read and write in 3 languages - French being one of them but even I prefer to discuss my health in English. This is CANADA if Quebec doesn't like it GET OUT or split the border at Montreal and we can stop this useless Province from ruining our city. The rest of CANADA will not miss you.

Also this is not in the fed's jurisdiction. For the very reason that if you aren't a fan then you can move to a province that has different policies. That's the point. If the feds, for some ungodly reason, overstep again then there is no getting away from bad policy, it'll be country-wide and decided in the city of Ottawa rather than locally.

English money? Wealth is going OUT of Quebec, not in. Tens of billions created by French Canadians go to Ontario every year as the English still have a grip on half of Montreal's economy. This is why Toronto is rich despite being in the rust belt with poor cities like Detroit.

When are people through out Canada are going to understand that Quebec is it's own country and the prime Ministers of Canada never took the steps to correct the fact that there are three nations in Canada. There are the many different first nations with the fact that the English are the majority and the French are the minority in Canada. but there are only two official languages in Canada. There is English and some French in Canada and only French in Quebec. The problem is that the French of Quebec don't want English spoken on their territory but demand that French is to be respected throughout Canada. This is a double standard that the prime Ministers of Canada never explained to the French of Quebec. It didn't help that a lot of prime ministers of Canada came from Quebec so that explains that most leaders will ruin Canada for the sake of the French vote.

Anything that has to do with th life and health of a person comes first before any language politic BS! Also, if you are a Canadian of another province you will not get health services and have to pay in advance. ALL other provinces of Canada will allow services and take the health card of the other province. So, if you travel to QC without insurance you will pay for any urgent health care (not refunded), no different than going to another country and you better be fluent in FR too. Quebec's healthcare system will look like Montreal's construction problem, closed roads and orange cones everywhere.

1:30 Demagoguery. Immigrants have to learn the language(s) of the country they come to. It's impossible to accommodate everybody speaking a foreign language. Most importantly, the discussion about English and French in Quebec has absolutely nothing to do with the "poor immigrants" not being able the speak either of the official languages of Canada.
Regarding official language use in Quebec healthcare: the issue isn't patients who only speak English, as it's unlikely they would be refused service for that reason. The issue is the increasing number of doctors who only speak English, which is somewhat ironic in this French-speaking province.

Not that it makes it better but the reality is that you can get English communication. And English hospitals automatically send communication in English if you speak English to them. I think they are making it less attractive for people to want to come to Québec and to stay since the federal government won't stop sending people over.

Why in the world should taxes be used on translators when it is expected that you are passingly fluent in the language of the territory you are a guest in.

If the federal government wanted to demonstrate that it has any concern whatsoever for English speaking Canadians in PQ, and that it has any concern whatsoever ever for the continuation of Canada as a bilingual country, then it should advise Legault that if this language nonsense creeps into healthcare, federal funding for healthcare in Quebec will cease. It’s time to grow a pair when dealing with separatists.

  • @hilairetucker

If Canada has both French and English as their official languages, government workers from supervisors all the way up to the Prime Minister must be bilingual, then Quebec should not be exempted from Bilingual laws. The Official Language Act was brought in by Pierre Trudeau and amended multiple times to take positive measures to help minorities speak one or both languages. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to work in practice. The language schools are under funded and teachers are under paid. Teachers often do private lessons on the side to pay for the cost of living. Language Schools charge Canadian citizens a lot to attend. This is probably to make up for other expenses but still not affordable for most Canadians. All this to say, a double standard should not be accepted politically. What’s the point of the law if it’s not going to be upheld? Bilingual and both unilingual (French & English) staff should be present at all times during the hours of operations. I understand that learning a language isn’t easy for many so we cannot expect Canadians or newly immigrants to learn a language in 6 months as I believe this was stipulated in the latest bill. Canadians should be comfortable going anywhere to be served in the official language they speak. Again, each government level (Municipal, provincial, and federal) should have all three employees (French, English, and Bilingual) available at all times, providing the paperwork in both official languages.

I know it's not equivalent, but whenever I hear people sing the national anthem of Canada outside of Quebec, they use the English version. It's the same for hockey games. Even when the Montréal Canadian face another team outside Montréal, they'll often sing the English version instead of the bilingual version. Let's just be honest with ourselves, Canada isn't bilingual and Quebec doesn't exactly itself as part of Canada, so why should they really bother pretending to be bilingual when Canada doesn't exactly make an effort either?

The separatists' are adding one more frustration on the English speaking people of Quebec. We have two official languages in this country, the last time I checked,, Quebec was still a part of the country so they can talk to their patients in French or English. Perhaps we should just cut off all of their transfer $ and let them leave as they do nothing for our bottom line in Ontario. Such discrimination and racism.

The provincial and territorial governments fund these services with assistance from federal cash and tax transfers.”
“Quebec has received equalization money every year of the program, totaling 221 billion dollars, more than any other province, or 51 per cent of all payments."
Since Quebec is receiving public federal funding (from Canadians from all provinces), health care should be offered in the official English language 1st; French 2nd; other requested languages after.
If the Quebec government is happy to take our money, expect demands to be fair in its use. ALL patients matter equally; NOT just French speaking patients.

English-speaking populations in Quebec's regions continue to decline. That is what Quebec politicians want to happen. They keep making it more uncomfortable for Anglophones in Quebec. The politicians want to drive the English-speaking residents out of Quebec. Every 6 months there is new language legislation to curb the rites of English-speaking Quebeckers in Quebec. The Federal Liberals used to speak up for English-speaking Quebeckers. That ceased with the election of the Trudeau Liberals 9 years ago. Trudeau likes to interfere in other province jurisdictions, but never in Quebec. The English-speaking areas are primarily in Montreal and the suburbs around Montreal why they keep voting for the Federal Liberals is beyond reason.
