There's a new trend where really big companies will hire people and call them "independent contractors". This allows the companies to bypass a bunch of laws related to how they treat their employees. This might be a big part of the "42 million freelancers" thing.
Hi Stef, once again thank U for your invaluable insight into programming & the business side of being an entrepreneur & a freelance programmer. Best wishes from Dublin, Ireland.
After the 2008 recession here in the U.S., the gig (freelance) economy really took off. Lack of jobs has a lot to do with it. Lots of graduates, lots of debt, no work. Thank you for sharing your insights Stefan.
I sincerely needed this information. I have been contemplating opening an office and the mistake I would have made is targeting big clients. I thought it was well rewarding and hadn't thought of the risk
Hi Stef, I’ve been watching your videos and appreciate your videos on the freelance web design/development world. I’m just staring out with my first client, someone I know’s restaurant, my first free gig to start up my portfolio. I’m going to get your freelance & entrepreneur courses very soon. Thank you for all the solid free content you’re putting up, as a newbie I’ve found it very helpful and insightful.
Its true, i was in a small company and one of our clients provided around 70 - 80% of our projects, always trying to pay less, and when the steady flow eventually slowed we were screwed.
7 out of 10 employers will take advantage of you when they smell you need them. I hate that - I occasionally run my own teams for projects and I absolutely never treat people like that. I treat them with respect - like partners. That is why I have people who pick up my calls even at midnight friday for urgent project. It feels great to have such feedback.
Thanks Stephan for your great nuggets. Btw, you've never talked about your experience making videos. Do you have scripts, or how many attempts do you make per video before uploading it to the public.
The problem with having lots of clients is they are not aware of each other and think they are the most important client, so they always think you can do things right away. When you have one client giving you a lot of work, at least they know how much work you have and know what to expect
how can you do freelancing if your not a front end guy, I mostly like to do desktop WPF apps and web development backside logic a lot of Databases SQL, etc
Yes freelance is a nice work at the same time can be a headache work: this month you can have 10 clients and the following month you can have 0 clients . Also you have to play multiple roles in your career such as customer support ; marketing and programming .
They said that more people on the planet means larger market. What they did not say is that more people + automation = means more competition for jobs))
It purely depends on what language and what you plan on working on. Web development? Basically nothing but the basics. Making a game physics engine or os? Yeah, that's a lot of math. Edit: for example collision detection is easily done with math by using line intersection
Figuring out the logic part is very important, i have been learning front & backend web dev and math has not been important at all, apart from computers counting from 0, not 1 like us.
You need strong math to become a "Back end Developer" at a big company. For small or medium company like agency not needed at all. Unless they ask you for a Very complex project which is VERY unlike to happen for small and medium companies.
Not enough and PHP Laravel is better. I used both in real-world as a freelancer. You need some front end skill, in fact front end more important than back end.
Stef, what is a good way to manage clients websites if you dont want to have them in your personal hosting account. Im worry about the possibility of a client requesting access to Cpanel . Could you make a video about it, please?
Have thought about that also. Wouldnt you just set up individual hosting for each client. At the end of the day wouldnt they own the website and have the right to go into the cpanel if they wanted.
Set up individual hosting for each client when they request you. Or make them a FTP account and tell them there is no Cpanel. You can also set admin panel for individual site but this is more advanced and you probably going to need a virtual private server instead.
Basically, the industry is saturating and time to look for some thing else? Space exploration - asteroid miner? Python Florida hunting by former Python developers? Chicken farming in mountains of Peru?
Most industries are saturated. For example Marketing extremely saturated. But coding is harder to get into. But there are a lot of "Fake developers" or wordpress enablers out there that don't know how to code but charge as developers.
That is called "progress" - it enables designers and laypeople who are not coders to play around and design and build web-pages. We cannot stop that. I still cannot code much but I can do wordpress for my sites if I need to test something really quick.
I crazy about your channel your videos are so amazing but I didn't find any video about working alone and what is the best framework for freelancing?? like flutter, react native, ionic and etc Please make video or answer me
Best framework for freelancing is Laravel. Why? because it uses PHP ? Why PHP? Because Wordpress and Magento uses PHP. There is a huge niche on Wordpress that you can access to then you can convert those WordPress clients and make them a more expensive laravel custom site. You can use Rect or Vue. But Vue is easier and faster to work on.
Stef, you ever have nightmares of working at a corporation, sitting at a cubicle? In this nightmare you're paid $39,000 per year to manage twenty-something code jockeys? And in this nightmare, you muster chuckles at your 31-year-old boss's retelling of Seth McFarland jokes, that is, you chuckle and say "Good, one, Chad", because you don't want to sleep in your Audi again and wash up in the local coffee shop restroom. You ever have those kind of dreams?
How does one have the peace of mind knowing their clients databases and passwords are safe in the long term. I had a mongodb database that just stopped working after about a year and it freaked me out about the idea of database disappearing or deleted. I’m obviously a noob.

Funny, im bouncer myself. After 12 years work as bouncer im learning Java to become developer.
Its true, i was in a small company and one of our clients provided around 70 - 80% of our projects, always trying to pay less, and when the steady flow eventually slowed we were screwed.
Sir Could you please make a video explaining the resources you use to learn or enhance your programming skills

Hi Max, are you hiring freelancers for WordPress and web design related jobs?
@@birsingh5388 Hi! Sorry, that project has nothing to do with web dev or programming.
@@birsingh5388 Shot his shot, I respect that
Great lesson man, i like your way. That are the benefits of freelancers, we have the freedom to choice with who we want to work. Regards
Thanks Stephan for your great nuggets. Btw, you've never talked about your experience making videos. Do you have scripts, or how many attempts do you make per video before uploading it to the public.
From throwing drunkards to throwing exceptions... classic!
LOL! Not sure which one I prefer? Hmm ... much more money with exceptions.

Work with front end freelancers, if you're good then you'll be their goto guy
Team up with front end dev give them a cut. You can also do sale with Marketing & sales person.

Yes, automation and that is where coding comes into place.

Dominic Easton
Thanks Dom!!

Is Django enough to work with as a freelancer and live on ??
Not enough and PHP Laravel is better. I used both in real-world as a freelancer.

Also because there’s no more jobs for junior devs

You are gold for us beacuse you are old 😜
