My husband and I spent two glorious weeks around the Tavernella area - about 10 years ago! What a wonderful area: the people, the food, the landscape. Highly recommend visiting and spending time w/ the locals.
In earlier years, I enjoyed traveling to big cities, but later I fell in love with small towns all over the place even more. Italian villages are indeed very charming.

I think you should rent a car from near big city like Florence or Roma.
Where did you park? You basically drove all the way through town, and then appear at the other end of town walking on Santa Caterina. There's some free and paid parking opposite the Coop, but judging from the number of visitors that would have been full. Then there's the paid parking opposite the market.
