Chew reservoir was built by the Ashton, Stalybridge and Dukinfield Joint Water Board shortly before World War 1. My grandfather was offered the job of reservoir keeper there, but turned it down as his two sons were both at primary school at that time. Instead he opted for civilisation looking after the Dukinfield upper and lower reservoirs (try to find them on your OS maps). The original track was so bad that the keeper had a donkey to bring up supplies! Great video, keep up the good work.
Love this area. I've done the Chew Valley Road walk a couple of times but favourite in the area is round yeoman hey res. (next up the valley from dovestone) then on to greenfield res (not a circuit). You either go back the way you came or scramble up either greenfield Brook or birchen clough, then you can carry on over the Moor to Holme moss TV transmitter... And get someone to drive towards Holmfirth to pick you up, because anyone who does it will be absolutely knackered!
Reminds me of the old Enid Blyton book ' Five go to Mystery Moor'. Many of her books mention the moors, underground train tunnels, heather, etc. What memories.
I love your video's and could listen to you speak for hours lol, You make your video's very interesting and give great narration as to the history. Thanks for sharing, I bet that was the best coffee ever. x
Hi Martin. I found a GEM today,,,,,, Was just going thru some more of your early work and came across this, for only being about 9 minutes long it was a great watch from start to finish. Looking forward to this Sunday
Crowden in Longdendale, where Manchester gets some of its water from, plenty of Reservoirs there, then walk over to Greenfield via Chew reservoir, make sure you pick a nice and light day, keep up the good work Martin
Hi Martin, have you ever thought about doing a video about the area surrounding Wildbank Hill (just outside Stalybridge). You can see all over Manchester from the trig point (399 mtrs /1309 ft). There are 4 reseviours in the valley below (Walkerwood, Brushes, Lower Swineshaw and Higher Swineshaw), also a disused, I believe WWII American Army weapons range on the hillside, that is now mainly destroyed, but parts still there, but I don't know of any history on it. Also in the surrounds is a derelict Mill (Oakwood Mill) in Millbrook and if you look at Google maps (satellite view), along Grove Road (Millbrook) towards Heyrod, there are woods on the right and a large disused Engine Shed for a long gone railway, which was part of the huge old Millbrook power station, some of the conveyor system that fed coal from the engine sheds to the power station, over the Huddersfield Narrow Canal still exists. Just an idea for when you run out of ideas. Regards, Mark
Hi Mark, am not familiar with that area but a guy I work with has told me about that conveyor system he was gonna take me down there and show it all to me, so yes a chance of a video there
we use to search and find old bits of lead bullets on that ex firing range as kids,it has some submerged rooms built into the bottom of hillsides, they look like old store rooms, maybe for rifles n ammunition possibly?the roof is the moor itself, dont know what state they are in at present, was brought up in that area before moving down into Manchester 30 odd years ago, been a few years since i went back up there.
Nice one again martin. You gotta get up Kinder Scout ! The highest part of the pennines in derbyshire. 2,088ft. I'v done a walk from Dovestone up to Chew. Also from Crowden up to Chew reser.
Nutters!!! .....looks great up there Martin, thanks for sharing and I must try to get up to Dovestones reservoir sometime this year, We always seem to go to Hollingworth lake which is a decent walk but nowhere near as dramatic as Dovestones. It's a good reason for you to do a secondary vlog here .....when the weather is decent, so you can show the area in all it's splendour! you could organise a rural Instameet or something! Look forward to the next video mate. Stay warm and dry you crazy fool!
Hi Dave. Ive never walked round Hollingworth lake, but yeah Dovestones is quite dramatic. Your right about going again Id like to take the drone up there be a good way of showing the area. A rural instameet lol, just me and the sheep on a windy hill 😀
Martin 0401 The drone footage would be superb, great idea. I look forward to that in the future 👍 I misread your note about an instameet.....thought you said up a hill with windy sheep! 🐑 💨 😂
you can do it Martin i shout !!!! This is where i climbed both sides of the valley putting a painting on each of them and videoing the results. My favourite area not far from my home.
I live near a feild with some grouse in. One recently slammed into my neighbours window !!!! i think she thought id done it as i stood in my own garden!!! hahaha
Tan Searcher Hello Thanks very much. I had to play the video myself it’s that long since I watched this one. The piece of music at the end is just some royalty free music that comes with my editing software ‘Final cut Pro’ it’s called Daydream Caf. You could search it but like I say it’s part of the Final Cut Pro bundle. Thanks again for watching 👍

Watching you 3 brings to mind. Younger versions of The last of the summer wine. Lol
Hi Martin used to motorbike trials riding on those Moors 40 years ago
The reservoir is 488m (1600ft) and was the highest in England until Cow Green Reservoir (Upper Tees) was completed in 1971.
Blimey, the things you do for a cup of coffee!!!!
That is beautiful.
Thanks Barbara
