- 🌏 Adventure to Steep Point - The Most Westerly Point of Mainland Australia!
This week, we embark on an unforgettable journey to Steep Point, the westernmost point of mainland Australia-and not just the signpost, but the actual westernmost spot!
Getting There: A Challenging Drive
The roads to Steep Point are known for their extreme corrugations-some say they’re the worst in Australia!
Adding to the adventure, you’ll cross bumpy, chopped-up sand dunes that require slow and careful driving.
The ever-changing landscapes keep the drive exciting, with stunning views along the way.
Exploring the Western Side
Instead of taking the direct track to the campgrounds and sign, we explored the western side first:
Cliffside Gems:
Using WikiCamps, we found breathtaking Points of Interest, including:
Blowholes
Nature’s Bridge
Cathedral Rocks
Spectacular Views:
The drive along the cliffs is nothing short of spectacular, offering unforgettable views.
Track Conditions:
Expect washouts, rocky sections, and bumpy terrain. While less corrugated, the western tracks are slower-going but well worth it for the scenery.
Our adventure took a twist when our Unimog faced some mechanical challenges!
Overheating Alarm:
While climbing a bumpy dune, the fan belt for the cooling system jumped off, triggering the engine guard and overheating alarm.
Belt Hunt:
After fixing the fan belt, two belts (fan and alternator) went missing again in the corrugations. Patrick set out on foot to retrieve them while Jele stayed behind with the Mog.
What happened next? Did Patrick find the belts? Why did the belts keep coming off? Watch the episode to find out!
Why You Should Visit Steep Point
Unmatched Beauty:
The west coast’s cliffside views alone make the challenging drive worthwhile.
Unique Exploration:
Don’t just stop at the sign-explore the lesser-visited spots for a truly unique experience.
Adventure Awaits:
The tracks and terrain make for an epic off-road adventure you’ll never forget!
Catch You Next Sunday!
We’re committed to tackling dirt roads and remote tracks to bring you the best of Australia’s wild side. Stay tuned for even more adventures!

THOSE ARE GRAND ADVENTURES... HAVE FUN... LIFES TOO SHORT. GLAD YOO FOUND THE BELTS. BE BLESSED!!!👍👍🤙🤙
Thank you🥰 They are for sure!
Spectacular is the right word, it must be amazing to be actually there, amazing as always guys 👍😃
Thank you🥰 Yes it was a rough road in but so worth it!
Glad you got it sorted, we got rid of our big steel fan and all the belts and put an electric fan on, which works great. The floppy belt is terrible, and dangerous as well. There is no way to tighten it to the specification the belts need with that tensioner.
According to my workshop manual, the operating temp for the mog is 95C, if you are running normally 70-75C, that is too low, diesels need to run hot to get best fuel economy and minimal engine wear, if your radiator cap and hoses are in good condition, it would be fine at 100C. The thermostat we have is only fully open at 95C ( Make sure you have the OEM one, as some of the generic replacement have a lot smaller opening) . We drove 250km up the Birdsville track in over 50C, and engine was quite happy at 100-105C.
Yeah that tensioner is a nightmare.... thank goodness the belt hasn't come off since.
What temperature are you measuring? The block or coolant? We usually run around 80°C on a flat stretch and that will go up to to 90-95 when going uphill for a longer period of time. As for block temperature (we measure it with an engine guard) its usually around 90 to 95 after warming up. On really hot days it will get to 102 but that is the most we've seen.
By OEM do you mean Mahle Behr? We have the 71°C thermostat in there at the moment, when I swap it next I'll try the normal one.
@@PatandJele The Wahler ones are the ones to get - they are a bit bigger than the other makes. Don't get the Tridon one, it is quite a bit smaller than the other ones. I have Auberins temp sensors on the cylinder head, next to the OEM sensor and another on the return pipe back from the radiator to measure the temp drop across the radiator. The Tropical thermostat opens early, but doesn't close the bypass valve any earlier, so it behaves differently to the the standard 83C one. The tropical one is fully open at 85C and the 83C one is fully open at 95C. Sounds like yours is behaving normally.
Great episode!
Thank you🙏😇
Hi, I’ve just found your channel, I’m in Melbourne, and travel often . Great content.
Thank you so much🥰🙏
😍 Still surprised I stayed inside the truck haha
Hahahah yeah! Improving ;)
❤👍
🥰🙌🏼
It's hard to see my little baby cry. 😢
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I removed my fan & pullys to replace it with an electric fan and I dont need the parts anymore, if you are unable to fix your parts you are welcome to mine for free.
Thank you we will let you know if it acts up again. So far it has held up with no further issues. How do you like the electric setup? Have you used it a lot?
I only installed it a few weeks back and haven't tested it yet im just about to put my box on the back of my truck so I still have about a year before I hit the road. I didnt like the look of all the belts and pulleys so I swapped it out while I was getting my radiator cleaned out. @@PatandJele
