    I don't know why but level crossings are very appealing to look at. Just... those shades of read and white, those lights and barriers. They look cool you know.

    I'm gonna compile all of the crossings I went to in 2017 in early 2018, though I'm gonna break it up into two parts:
    Part 1 will be the new and/or upgraded/changed crossings I went to.
    Part 2 will be the unchanged crossings that I revisited.

  • @MQsCues
    @MQsCues 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder what the mechanism is that leads to both reds starting 'on' and then gradually settling into an alternating rhythm? I assume it isn't a requirement, since some (but not all) LED signals don't do it. But I can't quite work out why any mechanism would need to do this either.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a weird flashing sequence and I don't know why it was implemented. Relays control the red lights flashing and the level crossing overall really, (there is a relays cabinet / box at most level crossings up and down the country).

    Why does the foot crossing in Essex have a wait button when it already has automatic barriers?

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an 'MCB-OC' type, OC meaning 'On Call'. Barriers are only raised when someone wishes to cross. This crossing doesn't receive many pedestrians.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use online timetables which tracks trains live so I know exactly what time trains will pass level crossings. This is how I always film the start of level crossing activations.

  • @jordanferrazza8700

    Weird how you have amber signals. I don't know but apparently it came from a train accident where a truck ran aground on a raised crossing and crashed into the train, then they had to put signage up to say trains must have permission, then they seperated the crossing so it's all good.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it was the Hixon Rail Crash in 1968 that changed the design of automatic half barrier crossings in particular, and designs of the lights.

    • @jordanferrazza8700
      @jordanferrazza8700 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      UK Level Crossings Channel What were they like before that? Just the plain design?
      Also does the country have a longer wait time than the next country, because of the amber light and the two on two full gate closures.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was basically two halogen red lights on a rectangular black board. I'm pretty sure the red lights had "STOP" imprinted on them, and like the Railroad Crossings they would flash alternately.

    • @jordanferrazza8700
      @jordanferrazza8700 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      UK Level Crossings Channel And does the amber light and two on two full gates make a longer waiting distance than most countries?

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sort of. For most full barrier crossings in the UK, they have to be confirmed clear before a train is allowed to proceed past. This is why it usually takes a few minutes for a train to pass sometimes. It is usually around 30 seconds to 1 minute for half barrier crossings, as they are automatic.

  • @ycantiusegeorgiantextforhandle
    @ycantiusegeorgiantextforhandle 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why does this exist and what's so interesting about level crossings? Genuine question

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Being honest, I just seem to find them interesting. They're a part of the railway infrastructure, each one is different and the whole operation with the train passing just seems to interest me, as does many others in the community.

  • @yabbaguy
    @yabbaguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    21:42 - what is that black bit that sticks out from the pole underneath the lights?

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The black extension holds a small camera which faces the lights. I believe that its used to film the road lights (all the time) to make sure they are operating. In case of level crossing failure, these cameras can prove whether the road lights are / were functioning or not.

  • @Omegajunior2658
    @Omegajunior2658 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very interesting. I think one of the alarms sounds very similar to the one in my home country Ireland 🇮🇪.
    I always wait behind the barrier when the alarm goes off until the trains pass by and I never attempt to cross the railway tracks when the alarm goes off otherwise I will get hit by a train and I'm finished. I definitely don't want that. I know it's extremely hazardous. I never played or trespassed on the tracks either (not even when I was a kid nor a teenager)
    Only for stupid people who ignore the warning signs, signals and lights and they just don't listen what they have been warned. They just don't care about dangers either.
    Anyway greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪

  • @robertgift
    @robertgift 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice video! Thank you for sharing. Show the signs longer see we can read them. Also learn how to do *Manual Exposure* to prevent background light from making the subject too dark to see.
    Are the UK *[o o]* signals copied after the American mee-mool lights *(o)T(o)* ?
    So glad the horrible sound ends when the gates have descended. American real bells are so much better.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment.
      Some of my more recent videos made have better lighting, making a better quality video. The UK traffic signals have been existence from at least 1960s and did not have a yellow light until after a major railway accident in 1968. I prefer the UK alarms rather than the American bells as each alarm in the UK sounds a bit different.

      I strive to be the best channel for level crossing videos which is why all my videos are without talking & shouting, or shaking a camera around. Fair point. My average single video is about 1 minute and a half. Compilation videos are just one off's. I don't make single 30-40 minute videos as for some it gets boring after a while.
