  • Here is how to become a substitute teacher: the step-by-step process of how I applied and was hired as a sub.
I was a substitute teacher from April 2019- March 2020 (when schools closed because of the virus). I subbed for grades 5-12 for all subjects, general and special education.

This video is a breath of fresh air. I'm trying to become a Sub for the 2021-2022 school year. I have been speaking with a friend who is a sub and both her and this video with Brianna have been quite helpful.

Its interesting to see the difference between states. I live in California and its a bit different. You can sub while you're in college, but you have to have at least 90 units. And a lot more money is involved you have to pay like 100$ to get your permit and then another like 50$ for fingerprints. The hiring process is pretty similar, for me it was quite quick, but I did have an interview. Also we don't have to do observations; I did those when I was an undergrad but only because I was studying to become a teacher. Also there is a whole bunch of paper work that must be done which was annoying. Thanks for the video its nice to hear how other states do it since California is quite strict for becoming a teacher.

So cool to hear how things are in different states! I didn’t study education in college so I actually liked having to do observations lol

Hi Brianna... thank you for the valuable information. 1) Are the CBEST and CSET tests timed? 2) Are the tests taken in-person or can they be taken online at home?

Yeah this sounds pretty similar to my process of becoming a sub, except the districts I work for didn't do the orientation and because I'm already a certified teacher (just graduated from a college teaching program) I didn't have to do observation hours.

Do you think becoming a Sub boosted your resume & will give you an advantage for becoming a teacher?

Hi!! I love ur videos and thank you for all the information. How did you schedule the observation hours? Do you just call any school or they pick the school?

Hi Briana, I submitted my online application and resume after that the school district ask me to go for finger print and they also send me the other paper work to fill out like W4 form, Health form to be signed by a physician and direct deposit paper. I couldn’t understand that why they are sending me all these paperwork before an interview or hiring.

Most schools are desperate for subs so you def don’t need classroom experience

As an eight year teacher from the ‘eighties I would not recommend substitute teaching with the possible exception of either big city high schools where they would permit you to cover the same building all of the time or else possibly either Catholic or Lutheran or Episcopalian high schools, again if they’re looking for a building substitute. There’s a fairly large Episcopalian school system in Honolulu, Hawaii which might be tolerable as well as a scattering of others throughout the country although far fewer than what the Lutherans have. I would avoid suburban public schools owing to the hideous helicopter parents and all of the attendant spoiled brats who can do no wrong. In other words if anything goes wrong then it’s automatically your fault since teachers can be gotten rid of as opposed to the parents and the kids who typically cannot be expelled or whatever unless they bring weapons to school. If all they do is beat you up with their fists such outrages are not even taken seriously anymore so good luck if you’re naive enough to even try.

I would avoid teaching in general lol. I quit after 4 years in the classroom. Best decision ever

@@byBriannaStone I quit initially after 7 years. Then after being a merchant seaman for eight years I tried being a Catholic Benedictine brother at an abbey that owned a prep school. I quit the monastery after eight months and enrolled in barber college then barbered for 20 years. In retrospect I found the entirely of academia both K-12 and then also universities to be virtually entirely useless. The only thing anybody really learns in school is how to read. But in recent years the elementary teachers have forgotten even how to teach kids how to read since they did away with phonics. I always vote no on school levies and now believe that parents should be paid to homeschool as online academy tutors. I also believe that motherhood should be recognized as a job and that the government should pay women to bear and raise children, even if they’re not interested in marriage. While everyone is bickering over the schools young people are losing interest in having kids at all. So to a great extent the public schools will be drastically curtailed owing to the baby bust which is ongoing at this point.
