I use a 350 watt heater with a digital thermostat running off an inverter in my Prius and that keeps it about 69F inside when it is 30F outside at night. I set it to 69 because then the digital displays correctly even when the heater is hanging upside down. I guesstimate that I use a third to a half gallon a night when doing that. I turn the climate control "off" and use the electric heater because then the car turns on to recharge much less often at night (since it isn't using the engine coolant to heat the car). The car engine turns on for a few minutes every hour to recharge the 200v battery just like when using the AC for climate control in the summer.

that is much nicer than the engine coming on ever 10 mins to heat the car

I was wondering about using the prius car heater. Best explanation I've seen so far.

Also hope that exhaust fumes are not a problem when snowed in and running

thankfully didn't even need to run the heat, stayed cozy enough with blankets

Does the tail hitch protect the exhaust pipe from snow?

@@yellowdressbookstore6602 maybe a little, but I didn't need to run the car overnight anyways

Hope you got winter tyres. The only thing that works (excluding turning TC off)
