Thanks for the lesson guys! absolutely awesome. I agree with Kenny in that "go-with-the-flow" attitude when you play. Is kinda magic see your finger playing and even more magic the sounds expressing your feelings. There have been a few classical composers that had that ability and the most known one is Mozart. His music is absolutely a picture perfect of his space in every sense. A true gem having Kenny and as always a great lesson from you guys. Thank you heaps!
This is truly amazing. Yes. We as musicians need to forget about the importance and trying to make it sound better for just a little moment and get into the space. That is so true. A lot of the time, we will think that what we are doing is good or not good. We are so busy in our minds we forget a I think a lot of the time to really get into the presents, and get into the space.
I played my best once I was 30 years old, had a flu and 41 degrees celsius (105.8 fahrenheit) fever and it was 3-4 in the morning! no idea how I even managed to plug the guitar, but I did as I also recorded myself... so no hallucination! :P In fact, in those days I discovered Steve Vai, so I was dreaming playing "For the love of god", and technically learned it imagining myself playing it. Geez... I wish I had fever more often!! XD

I cannot play when anyone watching or even if i hear someone come in the house. I am a great golfer at the range but cannot hit at course my best golfing where i was playing relaxed and confident. I am going to try this relaxed playing on piano and golf.

The message is important, but imagine the balance between intellectual and spiritual sides. I don't like to hear people's muscle memory. I like to hear their presence and beautiful mind. Not all minds always nagging.
Focusing on breathing is tough if you play a wind instrument, because you have to control your breathing more than if you’re playing piano. So, I like his tip about focusing on a spot on the wall.
But that makes it easier to focus on your breath. You actually need to focus on your breath to play. Speaking as a singer and a guitar player, when I sing, I can't stop focusing on my breath. When I'm playing guitar it's very easy to forget to breathe.
I knew Kenny from many years ago when he was teaching at the New School,he was such an awesome guy,he was a great teacher and really funny. He was Brad Mehldau's teacher when he was there.

@@sumedhhhh I forgot I made this comment- I found out that it’s both. It’s an improv piece by Keith Jarret called final impromptu. So while he is improvising it, it’s based off of a recorded Keith Jarret improv 😂
totally agree about lowering the sense of importance. I've known for years - I've performed for 25 years professionally, but if I build up the gig, I have to prepare yes but it's built up and feels more important and I'm apt to get nervous or worry. it's harder to focus on just the playing vs. thoughts, doubts, etc. And I knew by about age 12-15, just focus on the left hand - the right hand will do what it has to do, I'll just overthink otherwise. Sure wish I could have adopted and adapted that to other facets in my life haha. Thanks for this. x
I think it’s less about the breathing and more about the concept . The focus on something other than your mind. As he stated, it’s about getting in the space where your mind is “in the toboggan, not driving it”. At least that’s my interpretation
Does "effortless" = "boring"... no pain no gain... no gain no sustain...no sustain= boring... I work hard to play badly and won't give it up just to be more boring. I bore myself enough with all the hard work effort and embarrassing performances I hide from the public I refuse to bore. Don't deny reality... Mastery is really hard work... You only MAKE IT LOOK EFFORTLESS... by faking it.
I think his glasses xD... Ever mentioned why blind people are able to play so well? They have no sight but they learn to "feel" with their ears... Like Art Tatum or Ray Charles. Sight gives one too much input that feeds the mind, closing them brings you much more quick in that space. Try playing with your eyes closed without judgement...
