That solo is one of my favorites.....Starting from a whisper to a roar....Building the solo dynamics....At 73,I still teach, play, and practice..Buddy is an absolute freak of nature.
In my studies with Ed Shaughnessy I learned a TON of Buddy licks and tricks..NOBODY ever had the feel.intuition,or technical skills this guy had.His feel for rhythm, rudiments, and speed is unsurpassed..I have every BR record and CD ever made.....Going off to teach right now....Ralph Onofrio......
What i believe sets Buddy from other top drummers, is he had no weak limb! The hands and feet were equal. Almost all drummer have a strong side! The other thing about Buddy is there is absolutely NO CHEATING on that snare drum....NONE! He kept the heads tight but also the snares. You can't have that sound of clarity and precision any other way. Almost every drummer having to play that snare drum, would have a difficult time getting the same results. His crush or buzz rolls are just incredible. But my two favorite drummers in the jazz world were Joe Morello, when he was with Dave Brubeck, and Philly Joe Jones!!! Philly Joe had a record called "Drums Around the World" Which was just fantastic. Both Morello and Jones were extremely musical, in playing and solos.
One more comment fro Ralph....He is playing a very rare Slingerland TDR snare drum here....His first time playing it....That's why he seems to be favoring the snare in this solo...It's a 10 lug drum.Made for him.

Buddy Rich was and is still one of my favorite drummers. I love him. He would’ve been a good father to me.
