    I use the grid but always nudge the drums. I nudge the hats and the kick to the right and snare to the left. Samples are different depending on sample but I always use quantize just to start so things are on point and then I adjust to give it swing.

      The hi hat in the middle of every beat placed 1/3 step to the right. So you can sequence the melodies along with that 1/3 step to the right.

    The casual listener doesn’t care about weather or not a track is quantized or not as long as they feel what’s being given to them……. And there’s something out there for everyone. This message is for the upstart now thinking they’ve been doing it wrong once they hear an opinion saying so. Do what’s best for YOU. Make dope MUSIC

    I rarely quantize. However, I don't see what the taboo is about using it. As long as there's elements within the song that aren't "on the grid", you're good.

    Like the video. We have our own natural rhythm. Snapped to grind takes that away. I'm at the point I mainly record audio no midi like I'm recording to tape(sometimes I am). Recording and practicing this way makes your performance better over time. If I'm doing house I'm more inclined to snap to grid but not always

    As a person who was in a band for more than 15 yrs I now produce digital music and since day one I have had the concept of making my music sound as less digitally programmed as possible. Music is a timing thing, thats why you have count offs and metronomes. But I don't understand why u took the sampled loop off the 1? Leave the loop and just play everything else in manually. Something has to be on time because when you transition into bridge or chorus you would notice it large. And also why would you even pencil in the snares, just play the beat and everything else live, such as the bass line. And you would get that authentic band vibe if that's what you are after.

  • @MurderToCassette

    I'm a proponent of doing whatever suits the situation. Especially if you have good timing. If you have good timing, play freehand by all means. Unfortunately, most of the people screaming "NO QUANTIZE" the loudest are ones whose beats need it the most (no shots to the video maker, this tutorial is well done and informative) . In my experience, an SP 1200 double timed (for 48PPQ vs the normal 24PPQ) at 1/8th triplets quantize and 63% swing sounds amazing, especially compared to someone sloppily finger drumming on an SP 404 just to say "hEy bRo i dOnT qUanTiZe".
    To the commenter who mentioned Dilla, his technique was deeper than just turning off quantize and playing (read Dilla Time). It also helped that the MPC 3000 has one of the tightest clocks of any drum machine ever made (even with the quantize off). He was an excellent programmer. This whole no quantize fetish has led to a lot of lazy beat makers playing freehand with no sense of timing under the guise of it being more "real", to suspect results.

      @@theycallmeheat Yeah sure. But i thought quantizing your fingerdrumming-performance off cam in a video where you try to teach younger producers to stop using this function could be misleading to many, especially because you "nudge" the quantized notes afterwards perfectly on grid. But yeah, shit happens i guess ^^

    • @theycallmeheat
      @theycallmeheat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's needed in some cases, but don't let it be the soul of your production. Premier didn't have very complex drum patterns. So it worked for him, he def made it work. But my point was to show producers how allowing yourself to be free, will help your music production.

      @@theycallmeheat I feel you and I mess with you tough I just think a lot of time TH-camrs don't know how powerful there words are. telling people not to quantize is just as bad as telling people you have to quantize it should be said that both ways work well but that's not the message the message is quantize or your beats will sound stale and plain. and also boom bap drums in general are extremely simple.
      just wanted to add that to whoever is reading rather you quantize or not the beat can still be hot. don't try to impress other producers impress your listener. I've never in my life heard a fan of music say "I would have liked this song but the drums sound to on beat so I don't like it anymore " 😅 maybe the listeners you guys have say stuff like that 🤷🏽‍♂️
