Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.

I think I've commented on this before in one of your other videos with Kathleen Speranza. Watching her meticulous care for her charcoal reminds me of my atelier study. I'm sure I still have a couple of boxes of Conte a Paris Pierre Noir and Wolff's charcoal pencils and a box of 100 razor blades in my stash somewhere. Shout out Watts Atelier students. If you know you know. 🥰

Sooo interesting. I was never given anything like this in any art ed. It was just pick up a stick of charcoal and get on with it. While my sleeves used to rub away half my marks! Thanks loads. I love the look of good charcoal work, had no idea of how much could be finessed by advanced techniques.
PS what IS the paper type, I do not seem to find it….
I remember the first time I saw Serat's drawings. Blown away by them, and I'm not a fan of his paintings. Wish I could love working in charcoal because I love the way it looks, but can't stand the feel and the mess.
I just got a visceral reaction to charcoal drawing on newsprint! The feel when doing that. Ugh.
