- I have received so many messages asking for freight train stories that I thought it best to upload a bit of history, and some simple advice before I do. DO NOT RIDE FREIGHT TRAINS. I care about all of you and would like you to stay safe.

Love that so much
We romanticize so many things, homelessness, terminal illness, despair. Those who have experienced these things, know there is no romance in these situations, just a survival instinct.
I have been there not on a train but I don't know what you think romance because I never felt Romance when I was doing what I had to do to get by. but I have been happier on my side of the fence then I'll ever be on the other there are so much more things in life that means so much to me I can't even explain I would so much rather have gone through the obstacles of homelessness and being out there in learning to find my own way then never knowing the difference. I am so much richer and experienced than I am in monetary value and I have passed that on to my children which have made them the best people in the world!
I think the thing we romanticise is the potential feelings of freedom, love and community that these things can offer rather than romanticising the thing itself.
It’s so sad that there’s such a disconnect and dissatisfaction in how most of us feel we live that we would even feel the need to do that at all…
But we aren’t living how we’re supposed to so we have a nation of lonely, depressed and unsatisfied people that would rather day dream on these things.

@@pun988Good point, good point! That‘s why I am kinda missing my time growing up and being part of a church. It gave me that feeling of community and belonging that I never found anywhere else again.
I could listen her for hours. It's not that she is saying anything particularly profound or intense, but rather that she is just very good at making you feel comfortable while she tells her stories and you know you're hearing something from someone special.

My Grandmother told me that during the depression sometimes men would knock on her back door and ask for a meal because they were hungry. I asked my Grandmother what she did and she said she would invite them in and give them a big bowl of oatmeal or fried potatoes. Whatever she had the most of.

My Grandparents used to do that too. They were never robbed or conned, they just fed people... good stories.
My father lost both of his parents so he was on his own during the depression (he was 14) he would ride the rails and knocked on many of back doors to survive..it was a very rough time for a kid to be his own
I recently learned from my aunt that hobos had signs to find my grandmother's house in the 50s because she would feed them. They were poor themselves, but had a garden.

As a railroad conductor, i loved her disclaimer. It's everything she said. I remember a train i had and when i checked the dpu, there was a WHOLE family of five people on that engine. The sucky part is that i couldn't let it slide because there are cameras on the locomotives and i would be fired right now if i let them stay on and something would have happened. The most i could do is tell them to take as much water from the cooler they can. Good part was that they were 20 miles from where they were going, i told them where the next pd station was so they can at least contact who they were getting to. Once again she's right...love your videos👍👍✌

How long ago wasthat? I used to ride units 10-15 years ago, didn't know they have cameras in the cabs now. Is that every class 1 railroad nowadays, or just certain companies? I remember sitting in a boxcar in big spring tx on a colddd night waiting for her to pull out and then became aware of a low rumble from the back of the train. Ran back there and sure enough there was DPU, I climbed in just as she was airing up and had a nice warm ride East. Otherwise would freeze my butt off in the boxcar. That was in 2010. My grandfather was a Depression, Oklahoma Dust Bowl train hobo and his stories were scary he even watch a man die. After the Great Depression Grandpa became legit and studied and became a Santa Fe train engineer he died the oldest Santa Fe engineer. Spoon Lady you are an old soul but a beautiful soul love you.

My great uncle hoboed from one relief work job to the other during the Great Depression . He was 17 at the time and it wasn't particularly safe then either. You could be killed , robed, raped , or all the above then as well.

I lost my mom 6 years ago. I was with her when she left this world. And until she did I was told by someone to keep her comfortable, and I did the best I could. I have no regrets. We are all dying one second at a time. I will someday be with her. Blessings to you and your beautiful mother. It is never easy watching your loved ones suffer. Remember you are not alone. We all go through this my friend. While you pray for mom I will pray for you. For we are all in this together.

As a railroad worker i always wondered what’s it like from the other side. Abby did you ever get stuck in the middle of nowhere when a train got parked halfway in between destinations? Did you ever have any friends lose thier life in the process? I’ve seen the aftermath of the dangers. Thank you for sharing and encouraging people not to do it.
always sucks getting parked in the middle of nowhere, not always unavoidable, I got on a train to L.A woke up 9 hours later going back to bakersfield, something on the train broke, got parked in the high desert, had to cross a deep ravine to the highway and hitchhiked back to the hop out just to start all over again. Made it to L.A the next morning on a double stack. jumped off in east L.A x-mas morning.
Yeah lost a friend to slack action. Old fool was drunk.
My train was dumped in the Alabama swamps once in a ice storm. We blacked out and woke up blue and soaking wet. Me and my then partner broke into a car to warm up, before she closed the door I realized it had plexi glass and no handles inside, it was a railroad bull, or to the average joe a rail cops SUV. My partner closed the door before I could warn her not to, and of course we were stuck then. It was no relief because moments later the officer returned, and was off duty so he had to fetch his pistol. He was there to make sure the broken string was safe, and we got in his car when he was in the shack. Well he let us go but warned us of the people living in the swamps and we walked shivering with wet gear 22 miles to a church to dry out. A very nice lady woke us up with 10 bucks n hot food, then a nice officer came cause the cops were called on us as well. I thought a church would be refuge after freezing rain and railroad bulls, guns, swamp residents, but we had to move along. 10 miles down the road after warming up, buying breakfast and sore sore feet we were surrounded by the law, this time guns in our face, hit by an aggressive officer because i reached for my wallet after saying I had a knife on my belt can I get my I.D. out slowly? I feel like the officer said yes just to harass us more and asking if we wanna die in the woods later and laughing. Well that officer was calmed down shortly after by the first one we encountered. He thankfully drove up right then and proceeded to calm him and wink at me. The officer said he'd drive us to the county line, in front of the angry officer and his colleagues. Well we were 65 miles from mobile, and in the car he turned n said, "You guys sure stired up trouble, but you can't hitchhike here so I'll drive y'all to mobile.... Long story short he did, restored my little faith in humanity and gave us 50$ This is one of thousands of stories of close to 20 something years homeless and 15 riding the rails and travelling this and many more countries. I'll never forget the look in the officers eye's when he said we'd die in the woods, he meant it, it was a cold soulless stare. He was cold and times like that stick more so than being stranded on the rails.... This story had both! Cheers, remember not all tramps n Bo's are bad people. Just some of us got the itch. As a homeless kid it not only led to my beautiful daughter but stories and memories to last til the end of time

First of all my husband and I met you in New Orleans years ago and you play absolutely beautiful! 9 1/2 years my husband and I rode the rails and everything you say in this video is true but you can't deny how amazingly fun and how wonderful free we were!!! I want to dissuade people from trying to hop a train alone but I don't want to dissuade people from finding their own freedom!!! Many blessings to you Mama!!!💚🍃💚🍃 also being houseless and being homeless are definitely two different things!!! For nine and a half years we were houseless we have never in our lives been homeless

My Great Grand always called the travelers down by the rail camps, “Train folk”. She said train folk were just trying to find their way in a difficult time. She was the wife of Pappy Justice. Great Grand & Pappy provided warm meals and cowboy coffee on Sunday evening to the train folks. No trades, no pay, just meals for the train folk in Roseburg, Oregon.

I became homeless when my son was about 10 months old. I was being abused by his father and, well it's a long story. But Angel's were put in my path. From an IRS worker who expedited my refund, to a postal worker who rescued my mail when my son's father changed the lock, to a neighbor who rescued my grandmother's desk before I was locked out and the many others who fed us and finally a battered women's shelter where we hid for a month.
Almost 28 years later I still remember those who helped me and I've never seen them again but I am thankful for them still.
People like us are obligated to extend a hand to the next group who may need help. I survived because of strangers, and I try to help other strangers I see who need help. But this video expressed this so much better than I can.

My grandfather was one of those depression era men who hoboed on trains out of Arkansas to find work in California to feed my grandmother and her three young daughters (my mother being one of them). The privations and poverty he experienced from the depression had a lifelong impact on his life and how he lived right up til the day he died in his 80s. From his train hopping days he later was lucky enough to get a job and a 40 year career on the Rock Island Railroad. Loved watching this video.
My grandmother was kind enough to feed many hobos in the 20’s and 30’s in Phoenix Az. They lived a few blocks from the rails

Also... unrelated... my father-in-law bought my kids a set of wooden spoons when they were all little. They would take them to his little family restaurant, where old-time musicians play, and play spoons and clog with their grandpa. Beautiful memories because those days are behind us.

First of all I have to say I have now watched 3 of your nonmember video's and I absolutely love that you are so raw and ok with speaking your mind in such a respectable way. My family is from Hazard Kentucky and even though I was not raised there when telling people where my roots are from I have been treated differently and people think it is ok to make their snide jokes. Fact is I was raised by country mountain people where my uncle's expected us girls to very opinionated and independent and also proud of who we are. My uncle Denny was Vietnam Veterans and could play any instrument put in his hand. My family gatherings were and are the best memories of my life. We would stand or sit around my uncle and cousins that could play a guitar or banjo ect and we would sing old bluegrass music and sometimes he would take a new country song change the words and it was a blast. I am so greatful to see you on here being just who you are it is a breath of fresh air. I wish I could afford to join your channel because I bet they are just as awesome as the ones I can access. So thank you for this your awesome in my mind.

My parents had a black wrought iron cat over their front door to welcome people in need. I used to hop trains and your very right it was very dangerous. My friend Doc slipped and lost an arm. We were young and adventurous. Great video thank you for sharing♥️🙂

Farmers back in the day used to leave a corner of their land that has corn, wheat or whatever food growing on it for poor people to be able to get food from, I wish they still did that. I sure hope you write a book someday before someone else takes your stories and makes a book of them. You deserve to benifit from it because you lived it. 😁😍

I've lived this lifestyle for years. I currently live in a motor home. Life can be hard at times for sure.

I lived the life. It's both Beautiful and dangerous. Still have the same pitbull I got as a puppy in Las Vegas, New Mexico 2013... now instead of protecting me she protects my children.
