Lily's entire hang up with Simon in Infinity Train was that people like/sympathize with him (a white male) over Grace (a black/brown female). To back up and offer a """little""" summary context, normally you're told why you're on the train and what specifically you need to do to get off, but prior to and during season 1 and 2 the person in charge of the train was out of commission (technically they're back and control at the end of season 1, but every relevant character in season 2 arrived prior to that) So when people showed up they were just left to figure it out. When you show up a number is grafted on you that corresponds with all of the issues you've gone through in your life and what you need to work through. The more issues the higher the number. Grace was a rebellious kid who acted out to seek attention, and assumed that the number going up when she did bad things was a good thing. Simon was a shy and timid kid who heavily relied on others, and either prior to had, or developed trust issues when a train denizen he was traveling with left him to die while they were both escaping a monster. Grace saved him soon after and rationalized her high number compared to his low numbur with her being so great at what she assumed is just a big game. Both of them go on to form the Mad Max group that was mentioned, with Grace being the leader and Simon the enforcer, and rally together a bunch of other lost kids in their actions, which aside from just being a nuisance, vandalizing and destroying things, occasionally also involves uninstalling denizens that they convinced themselves weren't actual living beings because they weren't human/didnt have a number. This went on for over a decade until Grace came across a human traveling with a denizen. Grace grew close to her and became sort of a big sister figure while also slowly trying to indoctrinate her and separate her from the denizen she was traveling with along with Simon. Simon later ends up throwing the denizen overboard into the train wheels, and it's revealed that the girl they've been traveling with was actually a denizen that can take the form of a human. Grace now has a moral crisis that causes her to rethink all her thoughts and actions, while for Simon it's just business as usual. The aforementioned trust issues come back again when Simon realizes she was keeping her change of heart and the truth of the kid being a denizen from him. He's spirals, melts down, and takes over their group. This eventually leads to his unaliving when they confront, fight, and after a moment where Grace saves him, he kicks her overboard. She ends up being saved, but then afterwards the same monster that was chasing him at the very start appears again, puts all his items in a chest, and both try to swim in lava. Tl;dr, a lot of people sympathize with Simon because he was given a pretty raw deal. In a way made to represent all the wrongs the two had committed and made to take the consequential fall for it. Sure, he could have reformed his ways like Grace, but theres kinda undertones that imply he has autism, so the worldview that was painted for him as a kid kinda became everything, and he can't as easily 180 from all of it, especially considering that he was the enforcer.
I mean, not even just the autism, Simon was burned and lied to as a kid so he had a hard time trusting others or pursuing a different way of life. Confronting his flaws was just something he couldn't do in the end, which makes him a tragic character who a lot of people like.
