Not sure if I can explain this better, but here we go:
"Thirteen Orphans (Kokushi Mushou) set" is one of the rarest and (quite possibly?) one of the biggest win you can get in Japanese Riichi Mahjong. You need to collect: one of each "Dragon Tile" (the Red/Green/Blank aka "White" tile), one of each "Wind Tile" (all those black chinese character), and lastly you also need a "1" and "9" from each suit, plus any tile that matches anything else in your hand.
The reason why Thirteen Orphans is quite a big deal... is because not only this is quite difficult to obtain, but getting it would probably equals on getting "Royal Straight Flush" in poker hands... or at least that's the best I can think of to compare.

but, Thirteen Orphans is relatively easier of all Yakumans, it's true that Yakuman itself is rare though.
Four Concealed Triplets, Big Three Dragons, and Thirteen Orphans. these are the three of frequent Yakuman.
Thirteen Orphans is a fully concealed hand and unique hand what doesn't require no groups in it, but you can shift your hand into any honor tile, All triplet hand, Half-flush, etc.
also it is easy to withdraw if you find it be hard to win in the middle of game. it looks hard but actually is pretty low risk and high return.
Thirteen Orphans is tend to be "My First Yakuman" for many people.
Mayuzumi has explained Thirteen Orphans like "idiot's buffet plate" once.
@@alc1696 Right, compared to the other Yakumans, Thirteen Orphans might argued as one of the "more easier" to get. But then again it's like you said, getting any of the Yakuman itself is already hard enough.
Relatively the hardest to get for me at least is Chuuren Poutou since Kokushi is easier to get.
Gundou-Sensei is also luckiest to get Yakuman for what i seen her Mahjong Stream

I watched anime called "Saki" and "Akagi" but still doesn't fully understand Mahjong.
now, I learned 国士無双(Kokushi-muso) is called 13-Orphans in English. sounds cool.
Honestly, even though thirteen orphans is rare to get it's easier to call yakuman on it in 3 player room ( I got it like 15 times so far, been playing for like a year) That's why I was quite surprised to see him get it on 4 player room. Well anyways, glad he was able to get his first yakuman!
I may still be a beginner but I know enough to understand the difficulty of getting a yakuman. I want one though.
For any non-mahjong people, just know that a yakuman requires a specific assortment of tiles and it’s difficult because of how stringent the requirements are. So there’s a good amount of luck involved. But they are worth hella points. And Kuzuha got a yakuman called the thirteen orphans.
in the end mahjong is also based on luck you may have a nice hand but if you are not lucky enough to get the last tiles needed..
@@stephaniesuppes6323and that's where the skill elements start to come into play. Being able to read the other players and identify whether it's a good idea to fold and hopefully avoid dealing into anyone, or if it's worth trying to go the distance

It was lucky the 'head bump' rule wasn't switched on, otherwise this yakuman would have lost to the mangan (yakuhai/honitsu) hand on his left.

Yeah, in riichi mahjong there’s a rule where you can force a restart of the hand if you have nine different ‘orphan’ tiles in your opening hand. He clicked the button to reject forcing a redeal
Kyuushu kyuuhai (九種九牌) is one of the ways that Riichi mahjong can have abortive draws - if your initial 13 tiles + the draw contains 9 distinct terminal/honor tiles you can force a draw and basically mulligan. It's also a great starting point to go for the 13 orphans tho, so it's a choice of safety or high risk high reward
the 3 ways I know that you can have a early draw is everyone discarting the same wind tile, 9 distinct terminal/honors or 4 kans from different players.
