If you recall back at the start of this pod cast I made the case that as a new disc golfer I liked watching ball golf course disc golf better than woods courses because it was easier to follow. Simon just made the same point I've been saying all along. I will say I have seen a huge improvement in course management and in production making it easier to follow woods golf. It is much better but it isn't where it needs to be yet.
you really need to have a mix of different style courses, some harder, some easy, woods, open, mixed etc. I like the idea that some courses might be hard to film so the at home viewer misses out but if it was a cool course to watch in person it would become a destination course...
As a lifetime Cincinnati native. I suggest trying some other courses in the area, if possible. We have multiple pro level courses. Mt airy, Johnson hills and Osage Grove are great courses. Osage is the Northwoods of Cincinnati, it's a pure woods course. Mt airy is where Climo won 98 worlds(it's been modernized). Either way, I'll see y'all at Idlewild.
Not that anyone asked for my take, but here it goes. I think the problem with current coverage is a combination of lack of quality and crew, and all of that comes down to the small budget. The pga not only has expensive cameras, and all the tech behind the coverage, they also have a crew at every hole in addition to the on course crews following each feature group, often times having six or seven ‘feature’ groups. The have feature holes that have extensive coverage and have multiple on field announcers. I think disc golf has a more sustainable future and is already a quicker growing sport than golf, so it will just take time for it to get the budget needed to give it the coverage it deserves. I do think that following the platform or foundation that golf has provided does make it easier for disc golf to be successful. Thanks for all the work you both put into the sport!

2:08:41 Brodie, I was the guy who approached you after the round that day at Northwood Black. I just want to be clear that I wasn’t suggesting we shot the same or that we are even the same type of player. I wanted to get into the mind of a touring* pro who had a bad a round (because I also had a bad round that day) and find out how they handle it. So my question was really focused on “after the bad round, what are you trying to dial in on? What is the focus of your practice so that perhaps I can apply the same line of thinking?”… I think in the moment, communication wasn’t as effective as it could’ve been and I should’ve allowed you more time to cool off. I apologize for the miscommunication. And to be fair, you answered my question in this podcast saying you were still trying to figure out what was going wrong. I know this is a super late viewing of this show, but when I heard a reference to me, I felt compelled to reach out. No hard feelings and I hope you have a great 2024 season!
Gotta find that mute button to clear the loogies. Also, get some proper headphones like Brodie. Every time Uli touched the ear bud, my ears bled. Save us. Lol Love the pod tho. Great guests and discussions! Keep it up!
Guys if you’re going to have technical issues at least edit the podcast before you post on Spotify. There’s no reason to make people listen to all the issues when it’s not live. Came here from Spotify to say this.
Skyline>Gold Star -- just sayin' The whole chili/spaghetti thing took me a LONG time to get used to when we moved here, but it's not bad IF you aren't expecting traditional spaghetti OR traditional chili. It's a whole different thing.
Camera equipment is fine, its reception and resolution that's the issue. Live viewers are satisfied when the feed comes through at 720 or 1080, disc is clearly visible.
Just imagine any other sport, if people started quitting mid tournament cause they thought they couldn't win. Even in the X-games cali this year commentators were throwing shade at a couple skaters who wouldn't finish a run cause they already fell once or twice, and runs are only like 45 seconds and it's ranked best of 3 runs. And they don't even get to bail one of their 3 runs without people talking about it. Meanwhile in discgolf people are like "ah i'm in 30th, i'm done" and walk off, with 3 days to play.
it does not benefit the player at all. He will not cash out, lost time traveling, fuel, food. Let them keep quitting. It's their money being thrown down the drain.
It is very interesting in the FPO field the best players seem to be older. Kristin over 30, Missy over 30, Paige over 30, Catrina Allen over 30, Sarah Hokom over 30....Just interesting that this is the case whereas the MPO side is anything but the older guys taking it down.
To Paul’s point around 23 minutes, commentary is very important to helping viewers understand courses especially ones like Northwoods. I find that my only complaint lately with Jomez (as the biggest brand with more new disc golfers watching than any other channels) has been how often that Jerm tries to call a shot in the air as if he’s a radio PxP instead of a TV golf commentator who reacts as shots are completed. I think he and Paul are super approachable and fun, and the only thing that keeps being a consistent hit to the quality and even Jerm’s credibility to new viewers is how often he is at least premature with how good/bad a shot is - and often entirely wrong. It only takes waiting a couple seconds to wait for the flight to get to the end and let the video speak for itself a little more. Hope this isn’t taken as an “I hate Jerm” comment, I just want our sport to be more credible and watchable for new players.
@@QaIeb I don’t think I clarified enough that while it’s partly a personal pet peeve, it’s also something I’ve heard people I introduce disc golf to comment on being something that makes Jerm look like he doesn’t know what he’s talking about and things like that. In the spirit of the convo they were having about making difficult courses that are still quality for players and viewers, commentary is a big part of that. When it’s hard to tell visually where the disc is going AND the commentators sound like they don’t even know, it’s at least an easy fix (and a principle of sports broadcasting) to just be patient and let the video be the focus and commentate on the results.
Jerm specifically stays away from the live cards so that he can have these real reactions while doing commentary. I like his reactions, during and after the shot. It's fun when a shot looks good and then isn't, or a shot looks terrible, but then somehow finds a way to a great landing spot. Nice thing about doing commentary after the fact is that Jerm is not 'nicing' any of these shots.
@@jwoellhof I’m with you on enjoying that he is authentic and doesn’t feel stiff or something. I specifically mean that to anybody who is trying to figure out what’s going on it’s not easier when less than a second into the flight Jerm is already calling it “good/bad/oooooooh idk”, and it also just makes him look like he doesn’t know what a good shot looks like when some turn out perfect and he called it bad out of the hand or vice versa. I’d love to have all of his same energy and genuine reactions just with a tad more patience. Makes him look better, its easier to watch and listen to, and it’s more “professional” to help grow the sport with people who aren’t used to how casual and low key disc golf is!
When there's a 30 min backup, what do you think about being able to at least play catch or having a net to throw in, baseball players get to warm up after their offense ends the inning. I'm concerned about injury after big backups
Disc golf in general has a teepad issue ! 70% of all teepads suck. Ive been playing since 1989. Point #2 the 3 of you need to buy a property and make this course.
Stood on the teepad to decide if I throw my zone os or captains raptor. Sat the raptor down and shot the zone. Worked perfectly. Walked away. Realized 4 holes later my cap wasn’t there. Walked back asking other players about it and everyone denied. Got to the hole and disc is gone.
Next time just do audio interviews if video fails. I'd rather have solid audio then tough video connection. Sports radio shows like Rich Eisen does it occasionally. Just have somebody type in the main takeaways in a ticker or something. Great questions for Cole
The solution to the backups is to split the MPO and FPO tours so they are not overlapping this will allow for more spaced out tee times and you can maintain 4 person cards. This would also provide more opportunities for coverage of cards that typically don't get air time. Foot fault
Saying there are no good courses is an insult to all the clubs that put these courses together. Also, saying filming is bad is an insult to jomez and cameramen; filming issue is not due to the equipment, its an editing issue.
What is with pros advocating for cutting trees... Why are trees... There needs to be variety on tour... I think it's the most entertaining to watch heavily wooded courses... I'm on the edge of my seat at Northwoods... While on ball golf courses people throwing 500 ... Coo but not that exciting.....I have new found respect for uli... Stand for the trees!!!
what would you guys rank Øverås and The Beast compared to the others in US, would be awesome to get Krokhol also on the tour, feel that it would match the tour perfect.
one thing i never understand is how people are locked in on scores, if the whole is par 4 or par 5 kinda doesent matter, its still about using the fewest amount of throwes in total.. but gotta say alot of the ideas here was really interesting and could be fun/nice to try.
Please don’t TLDR. It’s worth reading. Simon is the best guest for debate. I think Simon is trying to work out how to showcase how freaking amazing this sport is. Making disc golf a better product for spectators and subscription holders, should be the primary goal if we really want to see the sport grow. While my wife and I tried to figure out how to navigate the landscape in Jonesboro for best sight lines, I began looking at each hole as a stage at a music festival. Every hole is a showcase, and should be treated as such. Framing it that way, we missed most of the entertainment. I’ve been a live sound engineer since 1997, so that’s how my mind works. Simon is on to something. 50 acres and a layout accommodates thousands of spectators to move around, that can provide a quality audio/video stream with no issues…keep that feedback loop rolling, Simon. We like that you are giving this a lot of thought. Btw, no one works harder at these events than the camera crew. If I was going to ask anyone for input about how to improve all things, those are the guys to start with. One last thing. Can someone please line things up so the commentators get eyes on the live video 2seconds before the viewers? It suck’s to see an amazing shot and hear commentators react late. I can’t be the only one who notices.
Really like the idea of having hidden cameras on fairways at the top courses. There’s probably a good amount of practice round Aces / shots that players could have had footage of
45:10 Simon's idea of a course "a few trees in an open field" My idea was to introduce artificial obstacles, like huge inflatable shapes that can be fastened to the ground in any area. But disc golf for me has always been an activity to do within nature, it's different than other sports. Maybe the pro league will end up using aerobie's on a ball golf course, which would be unfortunate.
If you all need a IT guy to make a check list lmk. I'll gladly sit down with one of you all and go though everything just to keep things smoother that you can pass off to guest or whatever to kinda help. Yes, its just a video conference per say.. but with 30k subscribers its to the point where hey little things should be such a hinderance. Technology is great when it works the way its supposed to :-p. Keep up the great content !!
As a spectator i enjoyed watching the Adam Hammes Dela vega one. I think it was because it was 23 holes. Smaller holes easier to follow. Some things people are so stubborn or just beholding to tradition, like having 18 holes. Also how about a triathlon with a longer swim and shorter run, runner so smug when they pass you ( they're not really) and it's like bitch i beat you so bad on the swim. Another would be why do cars a lap down have to stay laps down under caution, just try it out putting them back on the lead lap.
Better equipment doesn't necessarily mean better coverage. If you drop a PGA production crew into disc golf I don't think they would do as well as current coverage does with lesser equipment. We've already seen that in that one tournament where they hired a so called "professional" production crew and it was a complete disaster. As for Simon's idea about Go-Pro cameras on the players hats...F1 does that now with in-helmet cams and it's pretty cool. Might want to check out some F1 coverage to see what it's like.
I was traveling last week and got sick. It’s migrating from my throat to chest to head / sinuses. Hoping I won’t have to blow my nose 900 times tomorrow.
At 1h:57 Cole said he knew if he missed on hole 17 he still had a 2 stroke lead yet he said he wasn’t looking at scares and didn’t want to know after he heard Calvin aced. Which one is it and maybe he started to check in on them later on?? The way he said it made it seem like he didn’t want to know at all so I’m confused…
@@nickthequick2011 me too that’s why either Cole didn’t fully tell what happened or he’s trying to play it off but I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt he’s from my city:)
Simon on getting good courses for disc golf “give me five years, I’ll make it happen” and you can just tell by the look on his face he’s thinking “I’m gunna make a five million dollar disc golf course” and I can’t wait to see it 🤣🤣🤣
I love Tour Life and I appreciate everything you guys do for the disc golf community. That being said the audio and general quality of this episode is unacceptable. I would suggest either hosting the guest/podcast in person or before going live check with guest(s) to ensure their internet is capable of handling the stream. If their internet is not capable, consider prerecording the interview and editing out the parts that are inaudible. I understand that none of this is convenient and that you guys have enough on your plate as is but if this becomes the norm I will have to consider not listening/watching.
Continuing to comment on every podcast asking for timestamps. As someone who watches in my downtime before work/on lunch it wouod be awesome to be able to find the sections that most interest me to listen to without having alot of non related filler to sort through 😀
The biggest issue IMO with live disc golf coverage and knowing what is going on and where the shots are going and landing is the commentary. The commentary is hot garbage a lot of times. So often they are just quiet. Players will get up and throw or putt and the commentary says next to nothing. "Brodie is throwing... He's inbounds." Like what just happened what type of shot did he throw, what did the disc do, etc. Be more descriptive. We should be able to listen(no visual) to broadcast and have a decent idea of what's going on. They rely too heavily on people intently watching the video. Sometimes that isn't possible especially when a broadcast is 4-5 hours. People have other things to do. It would be great if I could go to a course on Sunday and listen to the tournament while playing. Not really possible with the lacking commentary. At some point, they need to hire some professional commentators or send the ones we have to a sports broadcasting school to learn in the offseason.
Sorry, had to double post. Have to push back on the filming. I have to assume you guys are talking about live. Jomez is a GREAT product. Literally tens of thousands were brought into the sport (myself included) by the excellent, entertaining Jomez coverage. These are the same people who watch all the high dollar coverage sports, many of whom have little to no disc golf experience, who are now regular viewers. I would love to see post production of 3 player cards, where Jomez could film multiple cards because they aren’t playing simultaneously because of cuts
DGPT has made watching disc golf boring to me. I used to get so pumped for tournaments, and I'm now at the point where I'm pretty sure this is my last season subbing to DGN...I barely watch some tournaments anymore
I had to turn this episode off early. I couldn’t disagree more with quite a bit that was said about the broadcasting of disc golf and where the sport is today, and where it should/needs to be.
@@FoundationPodcasts I didn’t turn it off immediately by any means. But there came a point where it began to sound like complaints and belittling of what the current state is. After the progress that’s been made it came off as a bit insulting.
I think Brodie missed Cole’s point. He was saying he doesn’t know how somebody wouldn’t know he’s winning the tournament when they ask for an autograph
Your only light years away from millions until the sport is filmed better and adopted by the mainstream population. As soon as those people see and fall in love with it, the big money will come.
Uli doesn’t know Circle 1X and Brodie kind of knows 😱😂. I believe it’s 11 feet and out (the bullseye distance for parked). The point is to measure true circle 1 putting success removing tap ins as basically unmissable putts. It should probably be more like 15 feet honestly.
embracing that DG is easier does not mean every single course has to be easier. If players keep getting better, people are going to be getting -18 to win, and then there's no where to improve.
I’m guessing you haven’t played northwood black, let alone seen it on more than a television or phone screen. While I haven’t seen fire mountain in person, I can say that there are a lot of par 3’s and some short ones too. The pace of play should say enough as fire mountain averages just over two hours…northwood almost double. I’m sure you don’t need convincing, just medicine. Have a great one!
I like the open field with few trees as Mandos. You can create every shot shape imaginable at every level of difficulty and honestly... fu$!k thorns, poison ivy, ticks, snakes etc! 😂 "Artificial" courses like this can be perfectly designed to force pro level shots and eliminate the "luck" factor, you either made the Mando or missed it, but I'd still have some non Mando trees out there too. Just think if you built an indoor par two course that's completely artificial, how many crazy cool shots you could perfectly design and now transfer that to a bigger scale. Seeing footage of bushes and prickly holly trees and a disc comes flying out with no player in sight is a joke!
Disc golf being too easy is a huge problem. Disc golf is easy compared to ball golf. They are also broke af compared to ball golf. Why even say you want to grow the sport financially but still expect sports fans to take a sport that's played in playgrounds seriously? Or spend near as much money as the do on golf tickets, NFL tickets, etc when they can tell that the product is not near as good as those sports? Disc golf is so weird. Grow the sport, just not too far😂😂😂😂😂
New solution for making disc golf “harder”: Create holes that are not made to be parked. And it will make putting harder. Not all holes should be capable of being parked. There’s no reason for it. Baskets can be placed on islands, or in artificial islands. The basket has a 15-20 foot radius of in bounds all around it. But from 20-30/35 feet, the area is out of bounds. In that case, the player can’t park the basket, but instead is always forced to play a shot that leaves at least a 30 foot putt for the birdie. In this case, the player has to make a long putt for birdie or lay up. The player cannot air ball a hard putt without the chance of going out of bounds. This makes putting harder and doesn’t allow every hole to provide drop-in birdies. May be an odd scenario, but it’s worth a shot. Similar to golf, not all holes are made to allow for 5ft birdie putts. The hole can be on a slope or there may be a run off area near the hole where balls funnel. That way the player has to make a long putt for birdie. In the same way, There’s no reason every hole in disc golf should be necessary to park
That’s essentially what they did with the Open at Austin hole 6 - designed a hole that bent so far left that it was impossible to park. I thought it was interesting in that you could only get score separation with a C2 make but it was virtually the most hated hole on tour by the pros. So, I think they would hate it - pros want parking to be hard but doable otherwise they will get in a fit..

Circling back to this podcast after Idlewild - love Uli picking himself and then finishing tied for 4th! Well done Uli and keep it up!
AM Worlds NWB Hole 12 my drive landed by 16s basket, was able to save bogey… best bogey of my life
It is very interesting in the FPO field the best players seem to be older.
I don't mind Jerm doing that at all
@@QaIeb I don’t think I clarified enough that while it’s partly a personal pet peeve, it’s also something I’ve heard people I introduce disc golf to comment on being something that makes Jerm look like he doesn’t know what he’s talking about and things like that.
Agreed
I'm concerned about injury after big backups
backups should be unacceptable.
I went +16 on northwood black. Scoring is not the issue. Pros are pros for a reason.
All 6 picks in the top 10 this week with Kyle Klein even in the top 10 as Uli's backup pick... Greatttt draft 👌
The solution to the backups is to split the MPO and FPO tours so they are not overlapping this will allow for more spaced out tee times and you can maintain 4 person cards. This would also provide more opportunities for coverage of cards that typically don't get air time. Foot fault
For this tournament MPO and FPO played on different courses each day
@@FoundationPodcasts 🤷 then I like 3 person cards and another cut
for live coverage, have more overhead diagrams with players disc location.
Saying there are no good courses is an insult to all the clubs that put these courses together. Also, saying filming is bad is an insult to jomez and cameramen; filming issue is not due to the equipment, its an editing issue.
When the fpo is playing a different course, what's a reason not to have 3 person cards
You can't complain about poor camera quality, but don't want the quality of the game to increase. They are hand in hand
First time checking out this podcast, hahaha US get you'r internet built out yesterday.
Where do y'all put pickard park(des Moines) in your list of courses?
Put camera operators in tree stands on corners so they can follow the full flight of the disc around corners from above
what would you guys rank Øverås and The Beast compared to the others in US, would be awesome to get Krokhol also on the tour, feel that it would match the tour perfect.
one thing i never understand is how people are locked in on scores, if the whole is par 4 or par 5 kinda doesent matter, its still about using the fewest amount of throwes in total.. but gotta say alot of the ideas here was really interesting and could be fun/nice to try.
Please don’t TLDR. It’s worth reading.
Simon is the best guest for debate. I think Simon is trying to work out how to showcase how freaking amazing this sport is. Making disc golf a better product for spectators and subscription holders, should be the primary goal if we really want to see the sport grow.
While my wife and I tried to figure out how to navigate the landscape in Jonesboro for best sight lines,
I began looking at each hole as a stage at a music festival.
Couldn’t agree more with this!
Either cole and Gannon are gonna be a wild rivalry, or they need to have the same sponsor and help each other dominate the game.
100% agreed with Brodie on his stance about DNFs
Really like the idea of having hidden cameras on fairways at the top courses. There’s probably a good amount of practice round Aces / shots that players could have had footage of
I would really be curious what a pga camera crew would come up with.
45:10 Simon's idea of a course "a few trees in an open field"
My idea was to introduce artificial obstacles, like huge inflatable shapes that can be fastened to the ground in any area.
Lack of score separation is what I dislike as a spectator. Doesn't really matter to me what the score is relative to par
“I have fast internet!” X10
I was traveling last week and got sick. It’s migrating from my throat to chest to head / sinuses. Hoping I won’t have to blow my nose 900 times tomorrow.
At 1h:57 Cole said he knew if he missed on hole 17 he still had a 2 stroke lead yet he said he wasn’t looking at scares and didn’t want to know after he heard Calvin aced. Which one is it and maybe he started to check in on them later on?? The way he said it made it seem like he didn’t want to know at all so I’m confused…
I think I saw him say he checked once coming down the stretch
@@nickthequick2011 me too that’s why either Cole didn’t fully tell what happened or he’s trying to play it off but I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt he’s from my city:)
Shout out to the guy who asked what C1x was. Lol I was too afraid to ask anyone
Simon on getting good courses for disc golf “give me five years, I’ll make it happen” and you can just tell by the look on his face he’s thinking “I’m gunna make a five million dollar disc golf course” and I can’t wait to see it 🤣🤣🤣
2:45:33 uli CASHING IT IN BABY LETS GOOOO
Simon is 100% right on Northwood Black.
As someone who watches in my downtime before work/on lunch it wouod be awesome to be able to find the sections that most interest me to listen to without having alot of non related filler to sort through 😀
"hurt or injured" borrowed from PMT just for the record
They know what’s up
Brodie, I was hoping you were gonna say you sent the guy another autographed disc.
Audio only for guests would be much less demanding on their internet connection
Brodie subtly questioning the moon landings just made me like him even more.
Why is Brodie going to gold star chili, honestly their cheese is dog poo. Brodie needs to try skyline and report back
The biggest issue IMO with live disc golf coverage and knowing what is going on and where the shots are going and landing is the commentary.
Brody, IT professional here. Plug into Ethernet
DGPT has made watching disc golf boring to me. I used to get so pumped for tournaments, and I'm now at the point where I'm pretty sure this is my last season subbing to DGN...I barely watch some tournaments anymore
Too many ads, terrible commentators, missing throws
I disagree on that front, DGN is great. It's the courses DGPT is selecting to play that are making it boring to me.
You could build a drone designed to fallow a disc at speed and drop of a tag to find a disc
I've been saying this for years now 😆
I had to turn this episode off early. I couldn’t disagree more with quite a bit that was said about the broadcasting of disc golf and where the sport is today, and where it should/needs to be.
Isn’t only listening to stuff you agree on kind of a bad thing?
@@FoundationPodcasts I didn’t turn it off immediately by any means. But there came a point where it began to sound like complaints and belittling of what the current state is. After the progress that’s been made it came off as a bit insulting.
No airpods means good audio from Paul. 👍
I think Brodie missed Cole’s point. He was saying he doesn’t know how somebody wouldn’t know he’s winning the tournament when they ask for an autograph
Gold Star is not as good as Skyline from my experience.
If Brodie and Paul could put an entire show together like Cole did his final round,….. maybe this would be an enjoyable show!!
Yikes 😮
I like Northwood black
embracing that DG is easier does not mean every single course has to be easier. If players keep getting better, people are going to be getting -18 to win, and then there's no where to improve.
Fire Mountain Sanctuary is a tougher course than Northwood Black. Try and change my mind
Hay Big fan what about filming flights with drones
I would not let my worst enemy eat Goldstar . It does not represent Cincinnati Chili. Please, Please eat Skyline
Plz. More backups so I don’t have to do my hw on the weekend lol jk
Uli kept mentioning 2-somes and you just can't do that as you need and person to help with ob calls and such for fairness
You guys should try getting a sponsorship with Rice Krispies with all the snap #crackle and pop you are giving away for free out here. 😅
New solution for making disc golf “harder”:
Create holes that are not made to be parked.
Love this idea
Like it, except the imaginary OB. I am a firm believer of natural OB, the white line stuff isn’t natural. Put that baby on water.
Did Brodie just accidentally call Cole “Colon” or “Colen” catchy
