Also a less known track that uses major 7 brilliantly is Lansing by Vinyl Williams. please check it out!

      RicmuBeats the numbers were using like 1 and 4 are referring to the Nashville number system! So if you’re in a key of C, your 1 chord is c major. The 4 chord is also major. So the video is explaining how if you drop the normal notes for the 3 and 7 chord, you can play all major 7 chords. It helps to know the Nashville stuff.

    Great video on Kevins obsession with major 7th chords. One little thing that I noticed: Unless I'm mistaken, the "flat 7 major 7th chord" isn't a thing. Wouldn't a maj7 with a b7 just be a dominant 7th chord with cadential function? I don't see how this chord connects with your example from 'the less I know the better' as they were all min/maj 7 chords. I thought maybe you were talking about altering the scale, but the I chord in the song uses the D#. Other than that great video, thanks for making it!

    • @tonton_bkg
      @tonton_bkg  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're confusion is understandable, those are a lot of sevens! "Flat 7 major 7" is not referring to the a major 7 chord with a flatted seven, but a major 7 chord built from the flatted seventh of whatever key you're in (this is why we write it like this: bVIImaj7 - the Roman numeral indicates the chord place relative to the key you're in and the maj7 refers to the quality of the chord you've built from that note). Thus in "The Less I Know The Better", which is in the key of E, we'll get this chord by taking the seventh note, D#, taking it down a half step to D, and then building from that a major seven chord (Dmaj7 - bVIImaj7). This is the third chord of the chorus bit a played in the video. Thanks for the question! I always appreciate the opportunity to further clarify things :)

    • @tobyssewingmachinerepair8949
      @tobyssewingmachinerepair8949 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tonton_bkg I see now, I was missing the part about it being a roman numeral "bVIImaj7" chord and not a scale degree. Thanks for the clarification!

  • @craign3766
    @craign3766 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is really great thank you. Query though, if using flat 7th and flat 3rds, is it then technically not 'in key'?

    • @tonton_bkg
      @tonton_bkg  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very correct! That’s what makes them special. Although they’re not completely unrelated. I discuss this topic in depth in my video on The Bee Gees: th-cam.com/video/IOW1h0c2Ut0/w-d-xo.html

    • @craign3766
      @craign3766 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonton_bkg Hey Yonatan, thanks so much for the reply. This is what always confuses me a bit. I have never bothered too much with keys. I recently started using flat minor 7ths which seem to work too. For instance in C# the change from G major to Bmin 7 sounds pretty cool to me.
