This show is great at mentioning major plot points early on and manipulating the audience into not thinking they're a big detail until later. The Cluster and Yellow Diamond were named in the Return and Jailbreak. Season 1.
Also, the fact that Garnets story of Rose and Pink with pink not caring about organic life going against the existence of the zoo which was meant to preserve it.

Lars' new design is in reference to the anime, Captain Herlock. Most of Steven Universe is an homage to anime, particularly Shojou (for little girls) and Josei (for older women).
Also has a fair bit of shonen inspiration, specifically from dragonball. Definitely more Shojou and Josei present, but you can find homages paid to all aspects of anime.
The animation style used here is a lovely homage to Revolutionary Girl Utena - where the sillhouette flashback is always used to denote that something is an unreliably narrated fairy tale.

At first you think of it kind of metaphorically, then they show us here what actually happened, and suddenly it hits you that was literal. Makes me tear up a bit tbh 💔
